If you are a first timer, start with Tokyo unless you don't like "city". Tokyo is very big and you will not be able to cover everything in 7 days, but you should be able to visit some of the most popular spot like..

Area 1: Asakusa/Sensoji, Tokyo Skytree.
Area 2: Harajuku, Meiji Jinggu, Yoyogi Koen, Shibuya, Shinjuku
Area 3: Roppongi, Tokyo Tower, Ginza
Area 4: Akihabara, Ueno
Area 5: Odaiba
Area 6: Ikebukuro

Area 3 and 4 are actually quite close. Don't need JR pass. Consider metro pass if you take their subway a lot. Before you go, it is good to know some basic Japanese, most of them are shy to speak in English. Body language helps a lot.

There is a lot of guide on what to do in Tokyo so I leave it to you. If you ask me where I like to visit, I would say Daikanyama and Ebisu area which is near Shibuya.

For 7 days, you can do either Tokyo + daytrips or Osaka + Kyoto.

For Tokyo, besides the usual Shinjuku, Asakusa, Harajuku etc, you can do day trips to Yokohama, Kamakura, Kawagoe.

Otherwise, you can stay 2-3 days in Osaka, and the rest in Kyoto. I can easily spend a week in Kyoto, as the place is more relaxed with many places to visit.

I did my first Japan trip to Osaka+Kyoto and then recently to Tokyo. Personally, I prefer Kyoto to Osaka and Tokyo.

Unless you are taking the Shinkansen, you do not need the JR pass. If you are in Tokyo, just purchase the Suica card and use it to get around on JR/Metro. If you plan to visit Kyoto, get the full-day bus pass. Most places in Kyoto can be reached via bus.

7 days will not recommend you to be ambitious and travel too many cities, maybe tokyo, kyoto and Yokohama?
And 3k per pax you can live like a king if you dont do much shopping

My first trip I went Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Yamanashi prefectures in 11 days.

Second trip I went Hiroshima, Tokyo, Nagano, Tochigi, Kyoto, Hyogo prefectures in 7 days.

Third trip I went Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama prefectures in 7 days.

Fourth trip I went Hokkaido for 8 days.

Fifth trip I'm going Fukuoka, Miyazaki, Saga, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Oita, Nagasaki for 14 days.

If TS know exactly what he wanna see, can plan itinerary accordingly to explore more cities.

Hijack a bit as well.

I didn't plan well when I went Kyuushuu. Oita includes Beppu and Yufuin? I only went Beppu and it was an amazing place. Of the places you listed, I liked Nagasaki and Fukuoka the most. The place I liked the least is Kokura (kita kyuushuu) and Kumamoto.

I just came back from March. I think Tokyo you could spent 4 days and side trip would be nikko and Yokohama. Nikko has a lot of scenery. Yokohama, nth really special just another city. But for shopping Tokyo still beats others. And food wise is cheaper in Tokyo compare to Nikko and Yokohama.

Lol-ed at some noobs at this thread !

I was at there for at least 2-3 weeks, my cost was around 1.5k-2k(I never resort to eat instant noodles..)

The only times I have to up my budget is to do shopping/treat the host or pals at there.
