For 7 days, you can do either Tokyo + daytrips or Osaka + Kyoto.

For Tokyo, besides the usual Shinjuku, Asakusa, Harajuku etc, you can do day trips to Yokohama, Kamakura, Kawagoe.

Otherwise, you can stay 2-3 days in Osaka, and the rest in Kyoto. I can easily spend a week in Kyoto, as the place is more relaxed with many places to visit.

I did my first Japan trip to Osaka+Kyoto and then recently to Tokyo. Personally, I prefer Kyoto to Osaka and Tokyo.

Onigiri x 2 is pretty filling. Nowadays also hard to find $2.50 stuff usualy $3-4. One thing that is definitely more expensive in Japan is FRUIT. Fresh fruit, not those processed.

When I go, I usually aim for just 3 square meals a day.
When I go with waifu, her strategy is lotsa small meals and snacks in between.

But can be as cheap as 100 yen a drink or 400 yen for a 7-11 heated bento. Usually you can settle your meal with a single 500 yen coin. Dun worry too much. Unless you are very fincky about food.

Not all tourist friendly I feel. Those less urban area may also pose a problem if you don't speak Japanese. Places like Gunma and Tottori... have nothing much to visit, just like most other Inaka in Japan. Maybe can save the exploring for other trips. First trip stick to the safer route... Just my thought lah.

End of the year I will also go for a 2 weeks Tohoku + Hakodate trip to cover places like Akita and Aomori. I wouldn't do that for my first trip though.
