Three camp fighting
Think with most being conditioned to be choosy even among the opposition. Split also split opposition support more. Incumbent support tend won't change that much bah. Some more Mac support for incumbent quite high leh. So, think may have some effect in pulling it up perhaps.

PSP announces new CEC ahead of GE2025, elects youngest ever member at 29

The party has yet to specify the members' roles.

image

Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has elected a new central executive committee (CEC), its top decision-making body, ahead of General Election (GE) 2025, which must be held by November.

PSP announced its CEC line-up during its party conference on Mar. 20, although it has yet to specify the members' roles.

Amongst the 12 individuals elected, six are new CEC members.

The youngest of them is 29-year-old Lim Ngee Tong Samuel.

A PSP spokesperson confirmed with Mothership that Lim is the youngest CEC member to be elected since its inception in 2019.

New CEC members

According to PSP, 12 members were elected from 24 nominees for the new CEC.

They are:

  • Tan Cheng Bock, 84
  • A'bas bin Kasmani, 71
  • Anthony Neo Woon Cheem, 57 [New]
  • Hazel Poa Koon Koon, 54
  • Joseph Wong Chee Fong, 68 [New]
  • Leong Mun Wai, 65
  • Lim Ngee Tong Samuel, 29 [New]
  • Low Wei Ling Wendy, 48
  • Phang Yew Huat, 65
  • S Nallakaruppan, 60 [New]
  • Soh Zheng Long, 36 [New]
  • Tee Kow Loke, 50 [New]
These members will serve for two years till March 2027.

PSP 'always ready' for GE: Leong

When asked by the media how the CEC election results speak to PSP's readiness for GE2025, Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) Leong Mun Wai said that the party "is always ready".

However, he declined to share further details, citing the need for further deliberation within the CEC.

Similarly, he did not comment on whether PSP will be having a new Secretary-General.

Poa, who is also an NCMP, assumed the role of PSP's Secretary-General in February 2024, taking over Leong, who stepped down to take responsibility for a Pofma correction order.

Leong was the first new CEC member to walk out of the photo-taking session for the new CEC.

After the session, he and Tan, who is PSP's chairman, were seen shaking the new CEC members' hands.

PSP's plans for GE2025

During a walkabout at Clementi 448 Market and Food Centre on Feb. 23, Tan reaffirmed that he will be contesting in GE2025.

The former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayer Rajah Single-Member Constituency (SMC) said he "cannot shirk that duty" to contribute to Singapore.

Tan served Ayer Rajah SMC for 26 years from 1980 to 2006, when he was still a member of the People's Action Party (PAP).

On Mar. 16, PSP held its first walkabout at Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre after the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee released its report on the electoral boundaries for GE2025.

Over 30 PSP members, including Tan, Poa, and Leong, attended the event and engaged residents at the hawker centre.

When asked at a post-walkabout media doorstop if PSP would be contesting in the West Coast-Jurong West Group Representation Constituency (GRC), where Taman Jurong is part of this GE, Tan said the party will leave its options open.

Nevertheless, Tan stated that if he ends up contesting in the ward, the area is not new to him, and he will bring along "a lot of historical perspectives" and past contributions, such as chairing the Jurong Town Council.

At the same time, Poa also shared that PSP was "quite encouraged" by the "very warm" reception by Taman Jurong residents at the walkabout.

While Taman Jurong was a "PAP stronghold" in GE2020, PSP will "rise to the occasion" after the ward has been carved out from Jurong GRC and added to West Coast-Jurong West GRC, she added.

Will PAP get Sengkang back this general election? What impact did Pritam's court case have on Workers’ Party? Do government vouchers actually drive inflation?

In today's podcast, we invite Professor Walid- author, podcaster, political and associate professor at NTU- for a deep dive into Singapore's political landscape, including what to expect in the 2025 Singapore general elections, how Singapore has successfully maintained a dominant 1-party system since 1964, and whether voting for checks and balances is the right choice.

Is every election PAP’s to lose? Are the electorate boundaries announced too late? Should elections be held more frequently?

In today’s podcast, we invite Calvin Cheng, Singaporean businessman and former Nominated Member of Parliament, to discuss the upcoming general elections, including misunderstandings about the checks and balances system, Singapore’s unnaturally high number of swing voters, and the role of media in politics.

With 3 ministers in East Coast, who might the PAP uproot for GE2025?

A concentration of resources.

image

Following the release of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) report, change came to both Marine Parade and East Coast GRCs. The report explains it like so:

"...the Committee recommended merging the remaining polling districts of Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC with the adjacent polling districts from East Coast GRC, comprising the Loyang and Flora estates, to form a new 4-MP Pasir Ris-Changi GRC."

So East Coast GRC lost a few polling districts. But that wasn't all.

"Consequentially, the Committee recommended that East Coast GRC take in adjacent polling districts from Marine Parade GRC, comprising the Chai Chee HDB estates and the Siglap private estates, and remain as a 5-MP GRC."

On a numbers level, it appears as though nothing has changed. East Coast was a GRC with five Members of Parliament (MP) for the 2020 general election and it will remain a GRC with five MPs for GE2025.

But in terms of personnel, there has been a major change. And now the PAP finds itself with a dilemma on its hands.

New addition to East Coast

Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat welcomed Minister Edwin Tong to the East Coast team.

This is because Tong, who has portfolios in Culture, Community & Youth and also Law, is responsible for the Joo Chiat ward that has been absorbed into East Coast GRC.

Speaking to Mothership on Mar. 15, Heng did not confirm whether Tong would be fielded in East Coast for the upcoming election, but said his team in East Coast would welcome and work together with Tong.

Heng also mentioned that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong would announce further details in due course.

The Dilemma

East Coast is now in something of a quandary. In 2020, no other constituency fielded more than two Cabinet-level ministers at the time of the election. This held true for even the bigger, 5-member GRCs.

But with the addition of Tong, East Coast now has three such ministers — Heng, Tong, and Maliki Osman, 2nd Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs.

It's likely that one will make way. But who will it be?

Heng Swee Keat

Let's start with Heng. Those who remember GE2020 will remember the dramatic circumstances under which the deputy prime minister found himself competing in East Coast in the first place.

In 2015, Heng stood for election in Tampines GRC, handily winning with over 72 per cent of the vote.

But on Nomination Day in 2020, Heng was spotted driving into nomination centre 9, St. Anthony's Canossian Primary School.

His name on East Coast's slate of candidates was hand-written in blue, unlike the others which were printed in black.

The seemingly last-minute move paid off for the PAP.

Heng and the East Coast team managed to defend their turf against a Workers' Party team (including Nicole Seah) that was widely-tipped to do well in the election.

But what does this mean for 2025?

It would be unlikely, though not impossible, to uproot Heng yet again, the second time in as many elections.

But he would be leaving behind the work he has put into East Coast, including future developments for the residents, especially seniors.

Edwin Tong

Another option would be to move the newcomer, Edwin Tong, perhaps back to Marine Parade. But this has its drawbacks.

While Tong may be new to East Coast GRC, he is already well-known in his Joo Chiat ward, having served as MP there since 2020.

With his ward becoming part of East Coast GRC, the PAP may be keen not to uproot Tong to signal "continuity" to the residents, despite them "moving" to a new GRC.

And since Tan See Leng was made a Cabinet minister after GE2020, Marine Parade will still have an anchor minister, even without Tong.

According to a Straits Times article citing political observers, they noted a "growing number of voters in Joo Chiat" having thrown their weight behind Tong. Which they noted could be a "boon" for East Coast GRC.

In a Facebook post, Tong said "our commitment to serving our residents remains unchanged."

He added, "I look forward to working with the East Coast team to build a strong and vibrant community in the East."

While this is not a confirmation, it could be a hint that Tong will be part of PAP's East Coast team.

Maliki Osman

The other minister, Maliki Osman, seems like the most likely candidate to leave East Coast.

Maliki, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs, helms the Siglap ward.

This includes the Loyang and Flora estates that the EBRC recommended to be added to the new Pasir Ris-Changi GRC.

Indeed, Maliki recently met with Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, the anchor for the old Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.

They discussed the "good number of residents" who have moved between Pasir Ris and Changi.

But that doesn't mean that Maliki is a shoo-in for Pasir Ris-Changi.

And it's down to the minority candidate requirements for GRCs.

Currently, Maliki is the only Malay MP representing East Coast GRC, with the other four MPs being Chinese.

Also, Pasir Ris-Punggol currently has Sharael Taha, a Malay MP for Pasir Ris East.

If Maliki is indeed moved to Pasir Ris-Changi, and Sharael remains in Pasir Ris, the GRC would have two Malay candidates for the upcoming election, while leaving East Coast GRC in search for replacement minority candidate.

So who will the PAP ultimately field in both East Coast and Pasir Ris-Changi?

Whatever decision is made, we feel confident in saying that East Coast GRC will not have three ministers fielded in the next election.

Red Dot United introduces ex-PSP member Kala Manickam as 'groundwork leader' for Jalan Kayu SMC

New face.

image

Red Dot United (RDU), a political party that contested the 2020 general election, introduced their "groundwork leader" for Jalan Kayu SMC on March 21, 2025, ahead of the upcoming election.

Kala Manickam, 57, and a former candidate for the Progress Singapore Party (PSP), will lead the RDU team as it looks to compete in Jalan Kayu.

Kala Manickam, RDU member

Kala is a specialist educator and business owner, and a single mother of a 16-year-old.

She holds a Masters in Lifelong Learning, and was among the pioneer batch of commissioned women officers in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Back in GE2020, Kala was fielded as a candidate for PSP in Nee Soon GRC, losing to a PAP team headed by Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam.

She was then dismissed from the party and sued PSP in 2021 over her dismissal, alleging violation of due process rights.

Fernvale and Jalan Kayu SMC

RDU conducted a walkabout at Fernvale, near Seletar Mall.

The area falls within the newly created SMC, per the recommendation of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) report.

Jalan Kayu's current MP is PAP's Ng Ling Ling, who entered politics in 2020.

On Mar. 15, she was absent from the Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC) Master Plan launch, where SM Lee spoke on plans for future improvements in Ang Mo Kio.

According to the report: "The Committee also recommended reducing the size of Ang Mo Kio GRC, which has the most electors of any ED (Electoral Division), by carving out some polling districts to form a new Jalan Kayu SMC."

Walkabout

Accompanying Kala were RDU Secretary-General Ravi Philemon, other RDU party members and volunteers. One of those volunteers was M Ravi, who contested in Ang Mo Kio GRC in 2015 under the Reform Party banner.

They walked about the Fernvale area, handing out flyers to passers-by and speaking to residents near Fernvale LRT and a nearby hawker centre at Fernvale Community Club.

Volunteers carried signs with the RDU logo and their slogan, "Towards a compassionate society."

During a doorstop interview, Philemon introduced Kala as the "groundwork leader" for Jalan Kayu SMC, together with a team that includes fluent Mandarin and Malay speakers.

However, RDU did not confirm that Kala will be the candidate they would field in Jalan Kayu SMC for the election.

"As a party, we will throw our fullest support behind Kala Manickam," he said. "If elected, we promise to be a credible voice for the people of Jalan Kayu in Parliament."

Focus on jobs, mental well-being

Kala said that what attracted her to RDU was looking into issues in a fairer manner for Singaporeans. She added that the party listens to people on the ground, and responds to any emails or calls they receive to attend to people on the ground.

She also highlighted RDU's open and consultative manner, particularly how the team listens to its younger volunteers.

On campaign issues, Kala mentioned lifelong learning and jobs, saying that there were hard-working Singaporeans who went through skills training, but don't seem to get job opportunities, facing "wage stagnation" and "no recognition" for the value of their work.

"And they are very experienced people. So that's something that we need to explore and expose in terms of getting job opportunities," she said.

Kala also shared that she noticed a lot of young families in the area, and the stress that young parents face with having to pay for tuition for their children, who also face stress in their studies.

She advocated for a more balanced education system to help the mental well-being of children.

Ng Chee Meng as the opponent?

Former PAP minister and Member of Parliament Ng Chee Meng was recently seen at an event in Fernvale, fuelling speculation that he could be fielded as a candidate for Jalan Kayu.

Philemon said it was "a bit premature" to say whether Ng would stand in Jalan Kayu, but regardless, they are "ready" for whoever the PAP would field.

When asked about the possibility of a multi-cornered fight, Philemon said they are talking with other opposition parties, and such a contest was not in the interest of the opposition parties.

"As for Red Dot United, we do understand the importance of opposition unity, and we'll do our part to work towards that," he said.

Experience with GE2020 campaign

In response to a question, Kala said that her experience campaigning in GE2020 would benefit her current team.

"Experience plays a part. I definitely want to say [I'm] thankful that I had an opportunity with PSP to contest in Nee Soon.

And that opportunity, with the experience I gained on the ground, was even more amazing because I was in Chong Pang against our Minister Shanmugam.

So I think that [was] really a courageous move that we took the step to [stand] in that constituency. So I feel that we are really prepared...and that will give us the edge in whenever we go."

With regards to her lawsuit against PSP, Kala shared that she had settled it with them out of court.

She said it was done in an amicable manner and she has "nothing" against the PSP, either now or in the past.

She also wished Tan Cheng Bock, CEC member of the PSP, all the best in the upcoming election.

M Ravi volunteering with Red Dot United in Jalan Kayu, won't stand as Reform Party candidate

He took part in an RDU walkabout.

image

Former Reform Party candidate M Ravi was spotted at a Red Dot United (RDU) walkabout in Fernvale on March 21, 2025.

In response to questions from the media, Ravi said he would be volunteering with RDU for the upcoming general election.

He also said he is "definitely" not a candidate for the Reform Party.

Walkabout

RDU conducted a walkabout at Fernvale, speaking to residents at Seletar Mall and Fernvale Community Club.

The area falls within the bounds of the newly-created Jalan Kayu SMC, as recommended by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) report.

Jalan Kayu's current MP is PAP's Ng Ling Ling, who entered politics in 2020.

Ravi was one of the volunteers, wearing an RDU volunteer tag.

He accompanied other RDU members like Ravi Philemon and Kala Manickam, who was unveiled as a "groundwork leader" for RDU in Jalan Kayu, and was seen handing out flyers and interacting with residents.

During a doorstop interview, Ravi shared that he was born in Jalan Kayu and currently lives there.

"I would like to pledge my support to RDU during this limited period of time and given my work commitments," he added.

In response to a question from Mothership, Ravi said he would not be standing as a candidate for the Reform Party in the upcoming election.

"Definitely, no," he said.

Background

Ravi contested GE2015 with the Reform Party, standing in Ang Mo Kio.

Reform lost to a PAP team headed by then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who obtained a vote share of over 78 per cent.

Ravi did not stand in GE2020.

In May 2024, Ravi was disbarred as a lawyer in relation to false claims he made against then-President Halimah Yacob, among other matters.

The Reform Party has joined with the People's Voice and the Democratic Progressive Party to form the People's Alliance for Reform (PAR) coalition for GE 2025.

PAR once included Goh Meng Seng's People's Power Party (PPP) in its ranks, but the party has since withdrawn.
