I remember (please correct me if I remember wrongly due to my old age) during the first few years of the implementation of Medishield Life, it was asked in Parliament, "in total how much premium was collect over the years and how much was claimed". The answer given was so far the total premium collected was $3 billion and the claim was $100 million. When asked why such a large disparity (instead of lowering the premium), they replied they need to set aside a higher amount of $ for future raise in medical cost. Isn't the government yearly expenditure include healthcare cost? Or all healthcare cost have to be covered by our premium?
Since Medishield Life is complusory for all Singaporean, it should be operated as a co-operative and not for profits. As it is automatically provide coverage from the moment of birth, there is no agent fee incur. The yearly total premium collected, the administative cost and the total claim should be published to let sinkies known. Suka suka increase the premium without providing the breakdown figure can only arise mistrust with both CPFB who administers the scheme and MOH.
