WP candidate for Punggol GRC Alexis Dang, who has been the subject of online comments focusing on her appearance, responded to a question on the issue. The reporter noted that such comments are rarely directed at male candidates.
Speaking alongside her team in the middle of a walkabout in Punggol Central, the 39-year-old said the candidates welcomed scrutiny and public attention as a group, because voters should understand who they are and what they stand for.
“However, as a female candidate myself, I do think that ... society tends to view us in a certain way, and people have expectations on how we should behave, how we should carry ourselves, how we should come across … That's just a natural part and parcel of how things are,” she said.
“But I think it’s very important - at least for myself - to not let these ideas limit who I am, how I carry myself, or how I bring my message across.”

Ms Dang added that all the WP candidates were multi-faceted individuals, not restricted to a single image.
“We are looking forward to sharing these different sides of us with Punggol residents,” she said.
She added it was a “privilege and honour” to be an example for young girls looking to contribute to the country.
Her teammate Harpreet Singh also addressed the issue, with a pointed message for men.
“Those types of comments are unacceptable, and they must stop,” he said.
“If any man tries to make that kind of comment within earshot of us, you're going to have to deal with us,” he added, referring to himself and fellow candidate Jackson Au.
