I have always liked the Pixel line up and the performance of android is always hard to beat.
I haven really got to use it much yet but what impressed me was how fast the Face unlock was (as good as Face ID and much faster responding than the time it takes for one to reach for the fingerprint reader under good lighting conditions)

I didn’t leave the Android ecosystem but I did leave for other devices — an odd one I was using till recently was a Samsung Xcover Pro.

Up to last year, I was still using the Pixel 3 as my secondary phone for overseas travels. The pictures captured on the device is still impressive in my opinion. That said, it’s a pity that Google stopped software support for the Pixel 3.
It's interesting that you used the Samsung Xcover Pro. it’s a unique choice, but i can see how its ruggedness would be appealing

As for the Pixel 3, it’s definitely a shame that Google ended software support for such a capable device. the photos it captures are still some of the best, even by today's standards

Wanted something unique and the Xcover ticked the boxes 😂

which screen protector you guys recommend for this phone? so it doesn't affect the sensitivity of the finger print sensor but still protects.
is the back camera protector plastic required?

How’s the audio volume for your pixel 8a? It seems very soft playing YouTube and Spotify at ~50-%

Do you recommend getting the small camera lens protector at the back?

Will that affect the image quality taken by the camera since light will be filtered by it also?
Using a camera lens protector can provide valuable protection, especially if you are frequently in environments where your phone might get bumped or scratched. some lens protectors might slightly affect image quality. this can happen if the protector isn’t of high quality, leading to issues like reduced sharpness, glare, or reflections. therefore, i won't be using one

For context, i'm an iPhone guy. i've tried to leave the eco system many times but i'm balls deep cos of macbooks, ipads, phones and even my smarthome.

that said, for work ,i've always had an android as a secondary device.

since last October, i've gone from Pixel 8 Pro, S24 Ultra, OnePlus 12, Galaxy Tab s9(still using this on the daily) and now i picked up a week old Pixel 8a second hand for $450 on carousell.

The performance of the S24ultra and OP12 to the 8a is very clear. Those phones run cooler game much better.

The 8A compared to the 8pro, loses out marginally in terms of performance and camera capability. If we assume the camera specs of the 8Pro is 10/10, the 8a is a close 9/10, losing out only in terms of detail and some night time performance.

That said, having paid only $450 for a phone that bests some flagship camera's , loses out marginally in performance an has a display to rival phones 2-3 times the price, i'd say this is a keeper for someone like me who uses it as a second phone. I've always had buyers remorse when i have expensive white elephants.

For those on a budget, i'd highly recommend getting the 8a if you are a casual user and do the following.
1. Play lighter games like MLBB, PubG, Genshin was bad
2. if you consume media, the 120hz ACTUA display is fantastic.
3. Doom scroll reddit, X, IG, TikTok

Look on carousell or checkout laz\shopee for sales. Brand new can sometimes go below 600, second hands approx 500 at time of this this post.

I hope my experience helps someone out there. Good luck!

i played it side-by-side along an old Samsung A series phone, at ~50% both speakers are roughly same volume. For normal pop song playing via speakers on a desk, i'll have to set to ~75%

that's also my concern, spigen sells $25 back lens protector but i'm also concerned the back camera quality would be affected by its filtering, esp. lower light conditions. thanks for input

Hello all,

I just noticed the Pixel 8a screen when viewed at slightly tilted angles, seems to display alternating bands of 'blue' and 'yellowish' tinge which changes with viewing angles, especially obvious on white backgrounds. Is this normal for pixel phone displays? or is my unit's display faulty?

Below GIF shows actual screen tinge (colors not due to photo artifact). white backgrd emulated from HERE
bluebands.gif

Tested on Iphone which doesn't seem to have this issue.

Doesn't look normal, but what warranty/return/exchange option is available to you?

If you send to CDTI for warranty servicing I think they will do a screen replacement for you at most which is leceh and downtime and means taking your phone apart.

If you can't see it during normal use maybe try to block it out of your mind. :frown:

Easiest option is to try returning to Shoppee lo on reasons that suspected display defect. But then have to camp for vouchers to re-buy again coz they don't do exchange . thereafter, re-setup the phone and all.. etc no guarantee next set i purchase won't have similar issue.

Normal use can see on light backgrounds but not deal breaker, like you say.. the issue persists most in the mind .. hahah
