when I first started into home espresso making, I was also considering the ROK. but then I would need to get a separate milk frother. knowing myself, I would get the itch to upgrade very soon and it'll be a huge waste of money.
so next I considered a proper machine like the Silvia. but then it's a single boiler, you can't pull a shot and steam milk at the same time.

so finally I ate grass for a few months and settled on a HX E61 machine.... and regretted deep deep. should've ate grass longer and get the slayer instead. :D

just a joke lah, hence the smiley.
when I bought the vibiemme, there wasn't even any talk of a single group slayer yet.
after a year of using it, I'm still very much satisfied with it.
the single group slayer is at 14k-15ksgd thereabouts I think.

Say if i strictly had 300 bucks to spend on an espresso maker, would the ROK be better or a 300 dollar delonghi/krups/philips saeco etc machine be better to pull a better shot?

if you die die wanna waste 300 on mediocre espresso instead of awesome filtered coffee, I'd say waste it on a delongi/krups/saeco.

The reason why a machine is needed is it set the temperature and pressure at the optimal parameters.

You can make an espresso by pressing with pressure, but it's not a good espresso as the flavours can't be brought out or destroyed in the process.

What are your personal opinions on it? (even if you may not have tried it before)

With $300 budget it's the best u can get making espresso imho.
$300 krups machine will not get good espresso and these cheap machines often have more quality issues.

U get to drink espresso on the go.
Get this and u can drink even camping

So u recommend those $300 krups or delonghi over ROK?

If have to choose, i will go for the crappy Delonghi/Krups.
At least he can do crappy milk frothing too.

But i'll personally pick neither.
It's a waste of time and money.
I'll rather get a Nespresso with that budget, at least it's convenient, he'll waste money less time.

Waste $$ real subjective, all I have to say convenience dont come cheap. Capsules are not cheap for that reason
Nespresso - Machine Detail Page

Issue with cheap machine quality issue, break and claim warranty is pain.
Maybe now better but I am not sure if the last for 2yrs. True can do milk

Yes Nespresso is really not cheap but sure is convenient. So you will probably save time, not the money.
I don't really the espresso though. Mine like leaked and needs repair every year.

I use 14 grams of coffee beans to make 2 cups of espresso. 1 pack of 200 grams cost $8-$9? Forgot. It's about 30 cents per cup.

I'm using the Brewtus, which can tune the temperature to control the intensity like the Nespresso's strength reading. Another big difference is the milk froth. Really hard to turn back.
