As with all electronics, it's probably better to wait it out and not buy the first batch - especially when there's new technology involved. Who knows, after all the initial complaints, Baratza might just release a v2 or something in the near future to rectify all the issues.

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I don't think anyone should be thinking the Baratza Preciso or Sette are built to last a lifetime - for that price point, they are actually already quite value for money. Commercial grinders easily cost 2-3x more.

which one grinds finer? BSGP or Preciso?

my brew pressure seems too high leh. I understand the bezzerras made their machine this way, but i'm still under extracting.

I read that ppl have experienced this on their bz07s and 09s. They adjusted what is supposedly the OPV (suppression valve). I've asked FCC and they said that so far people encounter more problems if they meddle with the OPV.

Now I don't know what to do! /stress/

Like what another forummer mentioned earlier, you should put a blind basket and run water through the grouphead then check what the pressure reading is on the gauge.

If it's something like 11 or 12 bars of pressure, then I think it's too high and you should get it adjusted. With the blind basket, it should read 10 bars and then during extraction, it would be just nice at 9 bars.

Anyone else has advice? I've helped him calibrate his BSGP burrs to the finest and the shots are still coming out pretty fast. The brew pressure is constantly at 10 bars which I feel is too high. Definitely not a grind size issue as I checked the grinds and they are super fine, even finer than what I usually use for my own shots.

I haven't compared the grind sizes for both at their finest settings, but both grinders can grind fine enough to choke my dual boiler so they are definitely suitable for espresso use.

However, you need to take into consideration other factors when comparing grinders, especially particle size distribution which plays a big part for the quality of your espresso.

I have a BZ13 and my brew pressure is also around 12bar. I do not seem to have any issues of under extraction. I have tried dose from 15g-20g. I have used a Macap and a Rancilio Rocky grinder with this machine. There are instances where the machine is even choked due to the grind being too fine.

Whether to reduce the pressure down is up for discussion. There are many discussion on this in coffee forums. Something to note is that even though the gauge says 12bar. The pressure at the brew head might be slightly lower than 12bar.

Since you purchased the machine from FCC... ask them for support and troubleshooting.

I'm just throwing out some random solutions out there.

Are you using fresh coffee? That's the first thing I always check when making espresso.

Are you using a water softener or some sort that comes with the machine? If yes try removing it and use plain tap water.

hmm i see. fcc told me that recommended is not to touch opv. other than this issue everything else seems ok. not sure what's going on actually. can i take 16g of beans over to your macap and help me grind? then i test if it will extract properly. haha!

I've ever used 7 grams of coffee in a single basket,13 grams with a double basket with no problem on 12 bars.
In fact I'm keeping an eye to keep it from over extracting than under extracting.

Try change a bag of beans of darker roast and grind a lot finer.
Not sure what grinder are you using, if you grind to the finest setting, and it's still flushing out, obviously the grinder can't grind fine enough.

You should check your grinder instead, maybe some crappy beans had busted your burrs.

Try switch to the single basket and dump all the coffee you made for your double to it, see if it chokes.

If you go by features not going by quality of build and taste of the cup, an all in one Krups or Delonghi coffee machine maybe better.

I used to read here and some forums and thought retention is a big thing until I finally bought and used my equipment. I can't taste or visually see any difference and I'm an espresso neat drinker.

When I first started, I got a weighing scale and make sure I have 0.0g variance.

Then I realised that a few days later the coffee gets more and more under extracted.
I wondered what is wrong since coffee, machine and grinders are giving constant values.

Then I figured out that things will never be constant as coffee oxidize all the time.
What I need to do every day is to make my grinder finer by a little or add more dose.
This means that my grinder is never on a constant setting.

So this chasing for accuracy is really redundant, stick to getting the taste right than being too engrossed with the process.

If you need a scale, can get one at $8 from mustafa. Remember to calibrate regularly.
Get good beans make a lot of things easier.

If you look at whole latte love first look video on the sette, the co founder showed that the small motor is not engaging the burrs directly but spins some shafts and axles to rotate the burrs facing another direction.
It's either a geared or belt drive which wears out more easily.

If you look at the motor, it's pretty small and the total weight isn't heavy.
Traditional design grinders use a direct drive motor, the motors are huge and heavy, this mass helps in reduce overheating.
Not sure the cost of repairs since the parts are mostly proprietory.

Hope the information helps.

one of comments seem noteworthy.

On a related note, there's now a trend toward reducing even lower to 6 or 7 bar. Matt Perger has been talking about this recently. And roasters such as 49th Parallel are recommending 7 bar for their single origins.

i recently tested a bsgp from a friend. its a disaster! i can't seem to grind fine enough at burr setting 1 and machine setting 1. the espresso under same technique was gushing out like water!! to be fair, my beans were stale about 1.5 months after opening. Could this be the reason? or the bsgp cannot make it?

Omg sette! maybe i shld invest in rok. is it ok compared to hg1

Your beans are 1.5months old, of course it gush out.

If your grinder can't choke the grinder, it is not grinding fine enough.

Quite unusual for flow to be fast with very high pressures. high pressures can lead to slower flow rates possible because fines migrates or the puck cannot expand properly.

try theses
1. check the flow rate
2. maybe baskets are the problem. try vst
3. check to make sure the puck is not fractured when locking in the portafilter. maybe the puck is too high.
4. the pressure gauge on most espresso machines is actually notoriously inaccurate as they don't really measure the pressure at the portafiller when the correct flow rate is flowing. Using a SCACE or similar device is the most accurate to to ensure that that at the correct flowrate the brew pressure is also correct.

Ask FCC to see if they can check the pressure for you. They should have a scace or similar device to do troubleshooting. Adjusting the opv is a simple thing to do but need to know the correct way to do it for your specific machine and pump type.

I think low pressure helps to prevent channelling. i exclusively use long low pressure preinfusion for light roasts so that i can grind finer without choking.

I grind almost 5 notches finer on my HG one when using beans roaster for filter coffee. Helps with getting more balance with light roasts so that its not sour.

just in case anyone is interested in the problem I'm facing in extraction, i created a thread in hb. here it is http://www.home-barista.com/espresso-machines/brew-pressure-on-bezzerra-bz13-t41341.html#p469506

70% chance is your grinder.
29% chance is your beans.

1% machine.

Go to the nearest supermarket and get a bag of Lavazza beans with the highest robusta content and freshest date to eliminate if it's your beans issue.

If you are at the finest grind setting and water is still passing easily, it's almost gurantee it's the grinder issue.
