Anyone here owns a "no electronics" Espresso maker? Curious to know whether it is really on par or better than traditional machines like the Gaggia Classic. Don't recall seeing these type of machines few years back...

Gone are the days of manual machines being a poor man substitute for an espresso machine. The robot and flair machines have proved themselves to easily stand up to the bigger machines in terms of taste, with the added bonus of cost and space.

The robot is not a coffee machine, it's more like a simple coffee press not much different from Aeropress, ROK, flair, etc. I don't think it's anything new or revolutionary.

Actually, if you don't care about temperature or pressure stability.
Just want a device to exert pressure to extract out an espresso looking drink.
Can just get those cheap de’longhi, krups ,etc.

At least those can froth the milk, heat up water, all in one.
Don't expect cafe quality shots though.

I am using Dolce Gusto with WayCap reusable pod. It is good but I am not sure how it will fair compared to proper espresso machines. Would love to get a Gaggia Classic, but thinking of a cafelat robot since it is performing well based on home barista forum.

Performing well is very subjective because we won't know their expectations or background.

You can definitely try because it's not an expensive upgrade but it is not too different from what you are doing with your dolce gusto using the reusable capsule.

Surely there's improvement in the pressure control and heavier dose of coffee used to achieve a more visually nice extraction, just like ROK or flair. But also come with its disadvantages like lack of consistency and no grouphead heat at all which will also directly affect the result. It's multidimensional in the variables. Only worry that you will think of upgrade again, just like your consideration to jump from dolce gusto right now.

What is also important, is to recognize what you like to make. If it's latte or Cappuccino, then such set ups won't be a pleasure to use unless you have plenty of time.

If I'm a student or a retiree with plenty of time, drinking mostly espresso, then maybe I might consider.

The beauty of the robot or flair is in the simplicity in creating coffee/espresso under hot water pressure of 6-9 bars which is easily verifiable with a gauge provided, its very different from the aeropress whereby its nearly impossible to create at least a 6 bar pressure due to the wider puck and without some form of leverage or breaking the plastic.

Paired with a good grinder to create the right amount of puck resistance for the above machines and you are easily creating espresso shots on par with cafes.

How do you store your beans? I am using those lock-lock types with Daiso dessicant inside. Sometimes put 1 sachet also on top of the grinder. Recommended?

My own stupidity as want to get rid of moisture but after a while, the beans get quite dry and tastes a bit flat too.

Likely the beans are flat because it’s left in the grinder which is not airtight. Best to put in the hopper only when u intend to grind. Don’t forget to grind out the stale grounds first before

Just got the Lelit PL92T.

Having used the predecessor PL60PLUST, I wasn't used to the dual hole steam tip, so I replaced it with one that had a single hole. Steaming was more than twice as powerful as the PL60, but the steam is wetter probably due to the teflon tube. Perhaps I'll get rid of the teflon tube and add a finger guard.

For some reason, the machine came with OPV adjusted to 8 bar with blind basket (also indicated on a label at the back), so I had to adjust the OPV to 10 bar.

Good thing there is preinfusion as it allows water from the steam boiler to be drained periodically unlike the PL60. However for some reason preinfusion reduces my extraction time.

I also miss the water level indicator from the Pl60; have to wait for the alarm to ring or check the water level manually. :s12:

Saving for niche zero as my next one.

How do you find Bacha coffee? Feels like TWG in some way. Anyone tried for espresso?

At least their 1910 is legit.
