btw, I'm trying this roaster at Lazada $5.90 per 250g pack. ( Pak Song Coffee ).

Because I compared normal microroasters vs Starbucks, can't really feel the difference maybe I'm a latte drinker.

Now I try the Pak Song ( Vietnam ) see if it's good or not. Anyone here tried?

Wanted to try this but need to wait until my existing stock is almost finished. How's the taste profile so far? Arabica?

Looks like the coffee is from Laos

Hi,

I've been brewing with my rancilio silvia for a number of years now and am using a bottomless portafilter. Whenever I brew, the shot doesn't come together into a nice cone and there will be certain part of the bottom of the filter basket which coffee does not come out from and instead, there will be a cone or two from the left and right side of the basket. In essence, the problem is there are "dead spots" in my extraction. I have managed to get nice tiger striping extractions only occasionally. I feel that my tamp is level enough and i am using a VST basket as well so its definitely not the basket issue.

1)Do you guys know what is the problem? Am i grinding too fine or is the dose too high that's why?

2) Does the roast level of the beans play a part? When I see the extraction, due to the lighter roast of beans that I am using (beans from homeground, apartment), it is not as syrupy and is "thinner" and could that be the reason for not a so aesthetic looking extraction? Will darker roasted beans be easier to get the tiger striping extraction?

TIA for advice!

Have your shower screen checked to see if it’s not clogged at a certain section or something. Give it a good scrub and back flush?

The fineness of your grind is determined by the timing. If your timings are and dose are correct, and you’re still getting dead spots, you can rule out these 2 things.

BTW anyone has got thoughts on espresso scales?

Have got a OK-ish scale for espresso (with timing and all), but the Acaia Lunar is tempting me. Not sure if anyone has found any decent alternatives (so far I haven't found any, not even the Brewista II or the Jimmy).

Have also read that a more accurate way is through visual cues (blonding) rather than time-based.

Also, anyone knows where to get Molykote 111? Couldn't find any at SLS, and couldn't get through to any local distributors (found on Google).

bottomless filter is a good learning tool but try not to overanalyse. Its only one of the tools that you can use to assess for even distribution. Taste is the ultimate indicator of good extraction. You already suspected some of the reasons for the less then perfect looking espresso pulls.

A few reasons why you are not getting a good pattern on your bottomless. not all of them are related to your technique or getting a good extraction!:
1. Using light roasted beans - Try using a medium to darker roast. I recommend using Ona Coffee Hitman, highlander coffee for consistent results. these are easy to brew with. Yes home ground does go for lighter roast style. lighter roasts are harder to extract properly
2. Using old beans - 7-21 days post roast date is ok.
3. Using water that is too cold - When using the silvia you have to time when to pull the shot.
4. using vst - Yes using a VST basket may result in inconsistent results because of the high surface area of the basket that is perforated and makes it much easier for liquid/dissolved/undissolved solids to pass thru. If you get it right VST baskets allows you to get good results for light roast coffee because you have to grind finer.
5. Disturbed puck due to too high coffee bed - Adjust your dose so that your shower screen does not touch your puck and disturb its integrity when you lock in your portafilter.
6. Disturbed puck due to no preinfusion - this is less of a problem but still a potential one. Your puck may have been disturbed with the shock of sudden pressure hitting the puck disturbing its integrity.
5. and Finally - uneven distribution - use WDT. I use it all the time for consistent results.

nope definitely not the same. beside the bluetooth connectivity for recording of flow rate the main advantage of the lunar is water resistance and fast readout.

When the brewista the reading will sometimes "pause" towards the end of the shot as the flow rate starts getting faster and it struggles to read this faster change in weight.
The lunar has a much faster readout and does not "jam" towards the end of the shot as the flow rate speeds up.

But yes the lunar is much more expensive that why I use the brewista when brewing away from home. heart pain to buy a 2nd lunar.

i prefer to stick to weight. blonding is very subjective.

molykote 111 is quite easy to get actually espressocups.com.sg has it. it lasts a long time.

Noted, will proceed to bite the bullet. Sigh. So expensive.

They only sell the 8g version - I'm looking to get the 100/150g tube. :s22:

For me, the perfect balance between flavor and ease of use and cleaning is Hario V60.

If you’re not looking to buy an electric grinder, I suspect you will very soon be. It’s a pain in the butt. Once you wanna buy an electric grinder, that’s when a whole new world opens up.

I’ve owned 7 grinders in my life. They come and go. The winner so far is the Niche Zero single dose grinder. If this existed from the start, I would’ve only needed this one.

The Niche Zero is perfect for people who OCD over freshness and grind retention at home. Perfect size for a typical Singaporean home, great specs, great taste.

That’s a lot of grinder!
I just own 3, 2 manual and 1 electric.
I am odd ball, primarily using manual

Currently using haro hand grinder but sometimes grind it and then pour it into the Puck is messy n need to measure.... Any burr grinder with such function? Can set one shot 2 shot or grind all the beans?

Sent from Samsung SM-N960F using GAGT

Almost every burr grinder has the ability to set grind amount by time. More fancy ones let you set by weight. So you and grind as much or as little as you like at one go.

And they mostly have portafilter forks so that you can grind straight into the portafilter without any transferring, although I find this much more messy than grinding into a 58mm cup and transferring.

What's the easiest and least complicated way to make brew coffee?
I think french press.

Those with filter paper will absorb the oil. You will be penalized in the amount of aroma and body. It is also easier to wash imo.

Fans of dark roasts, which are your favorites? I normally drink lattes, with long blacks an alternative.

So far Arcaffe Margo is my favorite. Love the very earthy and chocolatey notes. Very forgiving blend too. But I feel it's goes flat fast, which is bad cos the min size is 1kg from FCC. Very competitively priced.

Dutch Colony's dutch and colonial blends are a little too tart and acidic for me. Maybe it's my grinding though.

Homeground's Vanta is pretty good. Bold and creamy. Long blacks work pretty well with it too, with good notes of floral and balanced acidity.

Trying Common Man's blends now.

After 2 years of deliberation, finally jump the gun and bought my first real espresso machine and also upgrade my grinder. Didn't go for zero retention grinder as I'm not so discerning in taste. I drink milk base 100% of the time.

It's shipping to me now from Italy. Bought from Espresso Coffee Shop. Should receive my next Monday.

Bought these:
Rocket Appartamento Nera
Rocket Faustino

Upgraded from stupid appliance that don't let me do much.
Delonghi Dedica 680
Breville Smart Grinder Pro
