I wouldn't recommend staying at Hakone or kawaguchigo area. Basically the street is deserted by 6pm, nothing to see or walk around. If u are lucky there may be a 24hrs mart around the corner & if there isn't???? If u want to experience private onsen there are plentiful. My wife & i went to one at Yumoto Hakone & we each pay 4000 yen for 3 hours usage. We are allow to use the public bath & at the same time they had 2 private room with onsen. No reservation, first come first serve basics.

Normally onsen ryokan full package got kaiseki type dinner. That will take around 2 hours or so.
By then finish dinner already 8pm. With another round of onsen already quite late

Sorry to hijack but since on the topic of food, if the ryokan serves half-board with breakfast, usually does the breakfast take long to serve too?

Breakfast usually not so long, as all dishes come in one go. It more like Japanese style kinda breakfast set, grilled fish, egg, porridge n some small side dishes etc.

Some ryokan serve buffet style. So is all depends on the theme of that ryokan u stay.

Japanese like to wake up go to the onsen n wash up etc then enjoy 20 mins outdoor onsen before heading the the dining hall for their breakfast. U tends to eat well after the onsen.

You have the option of having breakfast in your room at a said time or u can have it at their dining hall.

Outdoor onsen is alway wonderful during winter when the snow falling on u while u in the onsen.

Budget abt 500 a night.

Can try Tonosawa Onsen Ryokan. Had a good experience there just 2 days back. About 300+ per night for the room with private onsen inside (abit small but still manageable). Make sure to book in advance as its popular.

They serve a hearty breakfast and dinner was fabulous, to me and my partner, it feels like fine dining as the seafood was fresh and food was good.

The reception was also very helpful to recommend places and directions.

Would give it a 4.5/5

Any reviews on Mount View Hakone?

stayed at mount view hakone. like it quite a lot. their price is quite cheap as compared to other ryokans so the ingredients used in their food is slightly cheaper but taste is good

Thanks. Any better ones to recommend? One downside of mount view is the common bathroom...

Any recommendations on the cheapest ryokan with a rentable private onsen? It doesn;t have to be in-room. Plus good accessibility too for old folks.

Master,

Can u recommend me a good ryokan which have a private onsen inside room?
My wife wants one with a good view of Mt Fuji and i'm quite vexed liao

Same ryokan got private bath but its not onsen water, its just heated water so you have to keep a lookout on that.

Yamanochaya was super ex during the time that I went so I booked laforet club hakone gora yunosumika. It was above average. But it has no view of mtfuji though. The private onsen room I stayed in, had view of the nearby mountain. Overall a good stay.

I suspect most are just heated water. Only very few have authentic private bath. One thing to look out for is check out the website. Some will indicate "not hot spring water". Another thing to look out is check out the photos. Onsen bath water will be cloudy and the surrounding rocks will have lots of whitish residues. Those not using onsen water will be clear water with nice bathtub...

To be sure... just email them and ask... but be prepared to pay at least $500 a night for ryokan with private onsen. The 2 i stayed in Hokkaido cost $800-1000 a night... The one at Lake Shikotsu is the best with private outdoor onsen...
