To all you guys with a broken Western Digital drive,

I suppose like me, all of you are very pissed with WD right now. But before you gave up on salvaging your precious collection of mp3s and movies and RMA that hdd, please check to see if your drive is a 1TB Caviar Black WD1001FALS-003EA0 made in Thailand. You can see this on the white label on the hdd. If you have one, please PM me and perhaps we can help one another.

I also have a crashed WD harddrive, and hoping that it's only an electrical error. If any of u has a WD15EARS-00Z5B1 (Caviar Green 1.5 TB) and is willing to part with it, please PM me. :)

I want to transplant your drive's electrical board to mine.

copp3r, it is not so simple as just transplanting the board. Among all the brands, it is particularly sticky for WD. Just our luck. You can google "Western digital swap rule" and read all about it. Even then, those rules apply to older models and may not even work for our drives which are relatively new.

Just a quick check.

Do you guys mail in to Changi North, or walk in at Pasir Panjang?

I saw the shipping instructions and was like  Need to get a box, an ESD, etc.

All my 3 RMA are by normal post. Even through I stay in Pasir Ris, going to Changi North is difficult by public transport.

Hey guys, just received my replacement WD external HDD. Sent in personally to Flextronics on 29th Dec and received it on 10th Jan via Fedex. I got a free upgrade from 500gb to 1TB and it's a newer model! (MyBook Studio). I hope it doesn't fail me again as this is my 2nd time RMA-ing. I would like to check with you all, is it okay to leave your HDD on all the time? Previously I kept it in my cupboard and only take it out when I want to use it. I'm afraid of dust spoiling the HDD. End up it still didnt last long. Will physical dust lying on the HDD spoils it? Thanks

Not very difficult la. Just take Bus no. 5 from Pasir Ris Interchange. About 5-10 mins walk from the bus stop. Faster processing time and need not pack the items and pay for the postage fee.

WD Green EARS

It seems quite alot of people has problem with WD harddisk.. mine is about 1 year old and it is dead now and have to go Pasir Panjang to RMA... Didn't know about postal service.. I ask them to courier to me and i even offer to pay for the postal, but they still said cannot and ask me to arrange myself.
Lousy service... This is my last WD purchase... I still have Samsung and Hitachi HDDs and i never regret buying them.. In my experience through so many years, WD Harddisk seems to breakdown earlier than the rest.... I dont even have any old WD Harddisk that is still alive.. but my 160GB Hitachi is still kicking and running for my XBMC.

Ok ... so far ... I got 2 x Samsung 1.5TB & 1 x Seagate 1.5TB in my PC waiting to be RMA-ed.

Managed to borrow a WD harddisk from my friend to copy my data over while I RMA the harddisks.

I have RMA-ed Seagate harddisk till lost count liao. One of the harddisk is ultimate .... received the RMA-ed harddisk ... plugged in ... run "HD Tune Pro" .... and still got warning!!

Have to re-RMA that harddisk again.

I guess there isn't reliable harddisk anymore. *sigh*

I believe WD had problematic disc platters received in Year 2010. A friend of mine and a client bought WD 500GB Blue in quarter 2 of 2010 have bad sectors formed after about 18 months of usage.

Just updated post# 83 for 3rd WD RMA.

there is a widespread of WD hdd failure with EARS series. Report of similar failure of WD model "EARS" after usage of around 1year has increased from china forum to oversea overclocking forum. WD seems to not maintain any QA for their green low-entry level product.

I only have one internal WD HDD and it is EARS.... still in RMA... now you know why i discourage buying WD internal... lousy QC and poor RMA service... But i do have one 3.5inch WD portable and three 2.5inch WD portable.. I will only consider buying their portable... Hope they last thru the warranty..
