HELP Iphone5 screen pop out

I just got my IPhone 5 replaced today FOC. 1.5 years out of warranty. The top of the screen popped out quite badly.

My phone did not qualify for either switch replacement or battery recall. Thus, I am very happy camper. Thanks to Apple.

FYI, Apple will erase all your data on the phone before inspecting the phone. Giving you an answer within 10mins of inspection.

Worst case scenario, you end up with a deleted phone and $49 in charges if for some reason you don't qualify. Eg. You modify your phone or that it has been tempered with by a repair shop outside, water damage, etc.

I was told that a certain series of batteries bloated thus causing the issue. There is no recall for this nor anyway for us to check this personally.

Thus, it's a gamble to take it down to Apple to inspect. You migh end up $49 poorer and a deleted phone.

I got mine replaced at Plaza Singapura. The que was 3hrs. Went at 11.30am and was given a 1:1 replacement at 3.30pm.

just updating this thread, I just exchanged for a refurbished iPhone 5 today at a.lab at plaza singapura due to screen popping out at left hand side. Bought the set during launch on Sep 2012 and warranty long expired. Checked by them and confirmed bloated battery are the cause. My set not eligible for battery replacement program. Seems like as long as no water damage or third party modification done, they will exchange the bloated set

I read the t&cs, the set need to fulfill sleep/wake button exchange program, need to reset and wipe off all data and need to upgrade to latest iOS before send for repair. So what else I missed?

I believe Sleep/wake button is repair and not exchange. Mine is eligible for the sleep/wake button repair but my power button totally no issue. Just that my screen pops out. Actually I was ready to go to third party shop to change the battery until I come to this thread. Thanks to those who updated this issue. My set was already latest ios and I have reset the phone before going down

Just exchange a new set! Can extent my phone to wait for iPhone 7 or 8 now. Thanks for all the info in this forum. They give 90 days warranty for the replacement set.

When the screen is on, and you try to press the screen back, do you see some distortion on the screen like something is pressing it from underneath? If so it might be a bloated battery. Do check here (https://www.apple.com/sg/support/iphone5-battery/) to see whether you are eligible for the battery replacement program. If so can go down to A Labs or QCD and the process should be straight forward.

But even if it says you're not eligible, you can try going down. If the phone hasn't been tempered with, repaired by 3rd party, or suffered water damage, they might still cover your device.

I just went to QCD Wheelock place a couple of days ago, with similar issue (screen popping out). I wasn't eligible for the battery replacement program, but decided to go down to try anyway because it is still a battery issue after all. They did a quick diagnostic on the phone too to see the battery condition. My phone passed the test. But because the battery was obviously bloated they took it in to have a look (check for modification, repairs, water damage, etc). I was told to wait 45 mins. After that they verified it was a bloated battery and provided a replacement refurbished device for me on the spot. Whole process took 1-2 hours including the waiting time, the paperwork, etc. I went very early to avoid crowd of course.

A Labs' process is different from what I know, never been there so can't comment.

I asked the service staff why they replaced the device rather than just replacing the battery, they said that the bloated battery causing the display to pop might have damage other components in the phone, so they just replace it to be safe. Not that i'm complaining of course, since i now have a new looking iPhone with 90 days warranty.

But it might be a case by case basis of course. No one can confirm that your device will be covered. If they detect there's water damage, modifications, etc, think there's a diagnostic charge? or at least that's what I recall the staff telling me.

No problem. I reached the place around 1045 i think. they open at 11, but they allowed customers to go in to collect a queue number a little earlier. Good luck!

mine popped for a few weeks, i thought it was due to previous fall but then I saw this thread...
need to update to ios 9? I am not eligible for both battery and on/off program, is yours eligible?

I am familiar with AASP procedures, will share a summary of what I know so you all won't need to try your luck and worry.

1. Screen popping out issues
Due to battery bloated issues
- Apple Authorised Service Providers will either replace the battery for free or provide an exchange, whether or not the battery is under the free battery replacement programme
- As the previous forumer pointed out, press the screen gently to see if the screen distorts, as if something below is blocking
- This applies for out of warranty iPhones, usually iPhone 5 and above, as iPhone 4 and 4S seldom have such issues
- The battery is replaced on-the-spot if they have stock, but you need to collect it 1 hour later
- They will wipe the iOS and data
- Don't have to check if your phone is eligible for sleep/wake button or battery replacement. They will replace if the battery is bloated due to safety issues
- The battery replacement will allow the screen to be seated back properly.

2. Screen popping out due to fall
- Your phone needs to be under the battery replacement or the sleep/wake replacement for QCD or A.Labs (AASP - Apple authorised service providers)
- As they need to open the phone up/1-1exchange the phone, they will probably just put the screen back for you anyways, provided the LCD isn't damaged (swiping etc works)
- If your phone is not under sleep/wake button OR battery replacement, you can try your luck
- The following third parties (I don't work for them) are the frequently mentioned places.
- IDT Gallery (I know people there, can quote Edmond from Mac Plus)
- iPhonefix (reliable, slightly higher pricing, in front of customer)
- iRepair (most expensive)
- atomware (might repair behind, average pricing)
- playurconsonsole (cheapest, I think)
- GWmobile (not as famous, but a lot of uncles and aunties go there)

It can be put back by simply unscrewing the bottom screws, popping out the cable and by carefully inserting the screen back in. Don't DIY unless you know what you are doing. You need a tool to prevent the inside cable from over-scretching. Too many people have broken the cable by doing DiY.

2. Battery issues/ Sleep Wake Button
- If your battery drains very fast, check if your phone is eligible for battery replacement
- May or may not be done on the spot, might need to send in and wait

update: que at 11am wait only 15 min to get my phone checked. When getting a ticket just say bloated battery immediately given a ticket. as bluewave said change battery is foc, but mine got a small dent, they scare screen cannot put back. Luckily the technician willing to give it a try and it was fixed in 1 hr. Nice service considering my phone is close to 3 years now.

On the other hand this is the first time experiencing a bloated battery, thought was screen problem and didn't bother with it for more than 1 mth... quite dangerous.

my iphone 4 (4 yrs++)still working ok just that the home button abit hard to press now.

I went to A labs on Friday cos my phone screen was popping out due to bloated battery, and also my SWB was not working. But instead of 1 for 1 exchange FOC they took it in for repair, and seems like tomorrow I can collect already? It has not even been 1 full working day...so fast?
