means you would be auto assigned a seat ...
normally when you see the seating plan is full, eventually when u get to the counter at the airport, you will still get a seat though ... happened many times ...

if u r lucky, u might get upgraded to business or perhaps premium economy
happened few times on my cathay booking before ...

Yup, unless you are their higher tier member, else can only select seats 48 hours before departure ...

During online check in, 48 hours before departure, normally would left few seats
If you still did not choose your seat,
(A) You would be assigned a seat (based on the class you have purchased)
(Normally online check the flight seems quite full, but went to airport to check in, their screen shows more empty seats)

(B) I believed cx normally overbooked their economy, hence normally would get upgraded to premium or business ... Happened 3x before on my cx flight, as well as friends got upgraded during their hk trips ...

Ultimately, have to depends on your whether the staff wanna upgrade you or not , if the economy class is almost full or already full ...

If economy is full, they would upgrade you to premium econ or business
normally wont reach that stage whereby their business also overbooked...

It must be last few to check in to have chance to upgrade. Think early check in won't get this chance. However, now Cathay at T4 is self check in, not sure still can get to upgrade...

and every company over books their flights, especially in economy. alot of travellers, especially business ones get flexi tickets, so they can change their plans. its more like how much do they overbook by. (btw... usually the first to get upgraded will be the flexi ticket holders, since they pay more)

CX still has counter staff. cause like it or not, people need assistance when booking. anyway if u book tickets together, most of the time u will get to sit together. unless its a last minute booking when u have to sit appart. now most airplanes these days are arranged 3-3-3 or 3-4-3, so not much issues. finding a single traveler to sit with u.

Thanks guys, booked Q class fare @$650 for 2 for our Nov trip. Check in can only be done 48 hours before flight.

Normally nov end dec is high peak season.
Hardly u would see promo on that ...
if they dont earn more during peak season, then no more chance already ...
prices would be increased few times even ...

i never got upgraded before. lol!

and yeah... its usually their milage high high membership which gets the upgrade. these people travel alot. but thats life lah, even grab got tier one loh. lol!

i heard sometimes if u tell them u are on honeymoon or something them might get upgrade. but again, depends on your ticket tier bah.

anyway i am never a lucky person. i guess if i want to try business class... i need to cough up the cash.
