It's a journey and not a one time project.

Start by not accumulating... don't add anymore. Stop buying unnecessary stuffs and once you get a replacement item quickly throw away the replaced item. I have even declined to take FOC items that I have no use for.

Change your mindset. Think about what if you die suddenly - do you want your family to go through all THESE belongings and wonder why the hell you have them? Just keep the things you are using/ will look at regularly and store the things you confirm will use/ look at a few times a year and dispose of the rest.

Once you get into the right mindset, the throwing is easy.

And after you get rid of 20%-30%, start re-organising to free up even more space and to make it easier to locate and retrieve items and do regular maintenance.

You only need 5 sets of clothes. Other can let go.

I think the more important thing is not buying new stuff while u are clearing. Or else it like 10 item in and 10 item out.
Yes no more buying now except daily use toiletries items.

If the thg letter or art or unusable thgs
it s ok. If the thg is soft toy 🧸 or pillow or clothing that is usable a bit more difficult
Honestly whatever it is, so long I haven’t touch for a year max, it will be gone. Usable if not using is classified as ”unusable”. If this sentimental, that one still can be use cannot throw, I will tell that person don’t bother declutter. Just enjoy your clutter, I am not being sarcastic.
Today throw, next month accumulate back, cos hey got space now. Just do you, understand this is what you are, be clutter positive.

I hate myself for being too soft n sentimental person...
Nothing to hate. We are all built differently. I am also a sentimental person. I hate to be in a position like yours and I know it's not easy. Do it slowly. Set a small target to achieve monthly. Think carefully about what you want to really keep or maybe even digitize. There is no rush.

Stay strong, brother. We are all rooting for you.

It’s really a mindset thingy. The thought of leaving too many things behind when I die gives me shudders. And the thought of ppl going through my belongings feel so intrusive.

On the contrary my mum is just happy to die with clothes in her twenties hanging in her wardrobe and clothes she is wearing now on clothing rack and boxes outside the wardrobe cos clothes she no longer can wear has sentimental value or one day she lose weight can wear again. :s13:

Difference between my mum and TS is she totally embrace her clutter lifestyle. It doesn’t bother her at all.
So I really meant it when I advise ppl who can’t bear to throw things should just embrace it. Be clutter positive.

When in grieving n packing is different when normal packing.
I am mentally drain.
Sorry I only read the first and last page, didn’t know of your situation, my condolences.
Just snap photos or keep pieces of whatever that’s sentimental. Like for clothes, take a photo and cut a small piece of fabric to keep? Or make a “ritual” when declutterring. Like a journal of what you threw, how you felt, what was the sentimental value. Then throw everything else except the journal. Maybe buy Polaroid take photos and stick on the journal. I don’t know, I just not into “belongings” and ”feelings”. All baggages to me. Erm, happy “declutterring”.

Guys,

Can share how you do it?
Especially if a person like me has attachment, hard to throw away things not use for months..
Put items in a box. Tape up the box. Write today's date on the outside. Keep the box.

If after 2 years you still never open the box, then just throw the box.
