Hi Xiaofan

How easy to use China tablet assuming we use all China software to watch movie. Will we have issue with geo restriction?

Hi Xiaofan

Yes, you will still have geo restrictions.

I pay for VIP membership of QQ Music and Tencent TV. Then I can enjoy quite some contents without using going-into-China VPNs like Transocks and AJS.

I use AJS VPN in case some contents are still blocked after paying VIP membership.

Reference discussions:
1) Chinese Entertainment Apps (not only for iOS but also for Android or PC).

2) VPN discussions will cover this topic occassionally.

any alternative vpn to access china web site?

using malus for past 10 yr....but currently connection vali lag
piror to malus using transock till bad connection

AJS 爱加速 is fine for me. Paying this one for quite a few years, at RMB 198 per year. A bit under used though since I do not need it so often.

Transocks should be fine as well.

After thinking about it, I decided to go for the Huawei Matepad Mini 5G (512GB, China set) and got the stylus too! I bought it from Shopee, but the shipping from China to Singapore will take about 2 weeks.

I was a bit worried if the HarmonyOS would actually run my Google apps, but after messing with it for a day, almost everything works great! All the apps I installed are running perfectly. The only thing is, I can't find a few apps I usually use, but hopefully, they' will be added later.

Good news: apps like UOB, Singpass, HealthHub, and CPF Mobile all work fine. Even Microsoft and Google apps have zero issues! I can use my Google Drive and sync my pictures to Google Photos without any trouble.

The normal version (not 活力版) of Matepad 11 SE 2024 Edition comes with Qualcomm CPU, HarmonyOS 4.2.

If you want to buy, you should get the normal version.

Initial there was a offer at RMB 929 but they cancelled my order. Later I got it at RMB 1019, probably not that worth it considering the chipset and the older HarmonyOS 3.0 version (unlikely to be upgraded to newer version).

But Easyabroad app (出境易) seems to provide quite some Google apps and some apps for Singapore.

Xiaofan, is there a diff whether using kirin or Qualcomm when it comes to app compatibility? (primarily want to use Google apps). I used to have Huawei maybe 20 with kirin cpu too last time. No issues with app compatibility.

Also, are we able to get the taobao national subsidy as sinkies? I see without subsidies, taobao selling around 2890 to 2999 rmb.

(though maybe will wait for honor to make a good mini but to date, no news yet).

1) If you mainly use Google apps, I wil not recommend using Huawei tablet now. There are solutions like EasyGoAbroad (出镜易) but I do not like that personnally.

You can check out the following thread to see if you want to use alternative solutions like EasyGoAbroad (basically Android VMs on top of HarmonyOS).
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/threads/harmonyos-next-vs-android-unbelievable-experience.7092577

2) No China Government Subsidy for us. That is only for Chinese Citizens. But you can look at the shop and platform discounts. I am not good at finding lobangs myself...

My view on Point 1) as below, mentioned in the above thread.
Just wondering why you want to change?

Playing with Huawei is probably fine, but changing your main phone from Apple iPhone to Huawei seems to be a bit too drastic.

Just my personally opinion, either you use Huawei phone as it is, or you should just treat it as a secondary phone. IMHO, using things like EasyAboard totally defeats the purpose of using the "pure" Huawei HarmonyOS.

I stopped using Huawei as the main phone once it does not have GMS (using Huawei P20 and Huawei Nova 5T last time). But then I have two China version Huawei Tablets for Chinese Entertainment apps. I am still using Huawei Band with the Huawei Health app (but not on the main phone, need to sideload on my secondary phone).

I installed EasyAbroad to take a look and then I deleted it soon after.

I have very specific use cases for my two lower end Huawei tablets so I my overall user experience is not really useful for the people here.

For sure Huawei MatePad Mini is one of the top small size tablets out there in the market. If you are okay with tinkering with the system, I believe you will be okay.

BTW, I have given up on small size tablets after some thoughts.

In the end, I bought a Xiaomi Pad 8 11.2 inch tablet (8GB/128GB) instead.

Huawei Pad Mini would fit my use cases (mainly Chinese Entertainment, no Google needed) very well but the price is on the high side. I have a self-imposed limit of S$400 for Android phones/tablets. Recently I just upgraded the budget of Android phones to S$500 but I do not want to break S$400 for Android tablet yet.

Some Chinese reviews of Huawei Pad Mini, which is really a very good small size tablet, but the pricing is on the high side. The CPU is also a bit weak if you want to play more taxing games.
