What would you do if you already tender from your old company to accept the offer in the new company, and then while you are onboarding for the new one, you didn't pass some health checks or background check or whatever, and then they prata your offer? Can they actually do that?

How do you know you are at the ceiling of the salary band though, since salary band is usually not revealed.
Maybe he tried to discuss with them about increments, and then they just randomly "say oh you are near ceiling already" and try to brush him off and get him to drop the thought and get off their back.

if you ask me, health check is just the basic if company buy some group insurance plans for staff. usually only check for things like BP, LDL/HDL, that sort of things.

background checks should be ok bah. unless you got something to hide...

my colleague who is holding a rank higher than me his salary is about $150 extra
Salary bands overlap between grades/ranks though, so for all you know there could be significant overlap. Also, some organisations may prefer to bring in staff at a lower grade/rank so there’s headroom for promotion.

Edit: To add, assuming you are not at the salary cap, being at a more junior grade/rank can sometimes be advantageous, particularly if performance bonus is significant. I’ve been in workplaces where a newly promoted staff can have a dip in total annual compensation in the subsequent year cos they moved from being the bigger fish in a smaller pond to becoming the smaller fish in a bigger pond.

sorry to break the news, but you are most probably not gonna work at the new place. Most employment contract will have a clause embedded in it that the contract is only valid upon passing the medical check and background screening. even if u already signed the employment contract, failing either of these 2 items will nullify the contract. that is why, I always tells any job applicant on my side that they dont tender until we inform them that both items have cleared.

But usually those checks are only done after accepting the new offer right? if don't tender first, means cannot sign new offer, then cannot clear the checks. Chicken and egg?

the right way to go imho,

  1. candidate accept offer
  2. Go for medical checks and background screening
  3. item (2) clear liao, sign contract
  4. Tender resignation.

Most of the candidates gan jiong spider demands to have contract to be sign first but in reality, u sign or dont sign, as long as no start work, the contract is invalid. The same goes for the clauses that governs the legality of the contract on medical check and background screening. Even if u sign contract, the moment that u fail either items, contract is nullify also. So i dont really get it when candidates chase like no tomorrow for the contract to be ready for them when things are still in progress of doing.

So technically "accept offer" and "sign contract" is 2 diff things?

Same, provided that 3 is excluding "item (2) clear liao", and also excluding 4.

None of my HR/recruiters have advised otherwise. Maybe they just want you to tender first so they can secure and trap you first, if anything happen they just tell you to f off lol.
