After using the phone only on wifi with 3g and data turned off all day I conclude that the poor battery life is due to the cellular connection side. On wifi only and with 2g cellular connection i can get more than 10 hours of web surfing out of the phone. I can get barely 5 hours using StarHub 3G.

Either software or hardware I am not sure but I am leaning towards a hardware fault since there are people who can get what apple promised(8 hours cellular surfing). Now I am deciding if I should go and get it replaced since getting a refurbished set might not solve the problem and my current set is perfect except the 3G batt life issue. I don't want to get a set which bring even more problem.

CSO said u believe? i said refurished set, u believe?

Yes, the small box only contains the phone, no wire/earphone etc.

CSO says it is brand new set from factory, but how to check?

Its too soon for apple to have refurbished set within 1 to 2 months from launched date. You can check through the serial number or if the replacement iPhone you had with a model number ending with "LL" then it is confirmed a refurbished set.

Apple usually have new phones as a replacement set for the first few months but package them in small boxes without earpiece and cables to save on shipping cost.

Have you tried:

1. upgrade to 6.0.1
2. reset your network

My battery life is bad too. Can literally see the battery % drop when surfing the web and Facebook.

I tried updating to 6.0.1, setting up as a new phone, turn off push/fetch. I'm doing to try draining the battery to zero, and do a full charge.

The battery life is worse than my 1.5 year old iPhone 4, blarh

Google is your answer! Macrumours forum is discussing about it too. Cos basically it's the same as iPhone 4S.

Thanks a lot ~ Previously I was still wondering if it was worth to change for fear of a refurb set. But you have completely put me at ease! Thanks!

Update: I was trying to drain the battery by running MeRadio continuously. Initially, the iP5 was connected to my home WiFi, and I left it on and went for a run outside. One hour later, it drained only 5%, really amazing. I then switched to 3G and it drained 5% in 10mins...

I seriously think there's something wrong with iPhone 5's 3G communication chip hardware, using too much power. My old iPhone 4 was much better.

Did you try disabling the system settings for location services and notifications [traffic info] etc?

Yeah, disabled all the battery consuming services like Location Services, Push/Fetch mail, Siri, Push notifications.

The battery really drains like water. Just 5 mins of Facebook consumes 3-4% of battery. I fully drained out the battery, and doing an overnight full charge. See how it goes tomorrow.

From what everybody is experiencing I am 100% sure the fault is on the cellular side and 90% sure it's a hardware fault, unless StarHub network somehow cause the phone to use much more power than it should.
