I bought a generic Lightning cable for $8 from those small shops at neighbourhood centers. I can only charge my iPhone 5 from wall socket, but not from the USB outlet. My iMac cannot detect, charge or sync my iPhone using this Lightning cable. :o

I know this is an old thread but wanted to post to warn other users. Stay away from 3rd party lightning cables! Mine failed after 2 weeks, and I only used it about 3 times. When I opened it to see what is wrong, I realised there is no proper insulation when the wires connect to the lightning chip.

Meaning if you turn your cable, the wires can break easily as there is nothing to hold them in place except the solder. The wires of mine broke, and short-circuited each other. It is covered by a plastic cap, not a plastic mould.

Apple's one, although expensive, has proper insulation, and the wires at the end connecting to the lightning chip are seperated and held in place by some plastic and metal. Very sturdy. And it is a plastic mould.

like I mentioned before...original cable is $28. if each 3rd party cable is $3, you can buy 9 of them. I have 2 original cable (one at home, one in my travel bag). I am using my 3rd party cable in office and in my car.

yes, it's confirmed 3rd party cable doesn't last like the iphone4 cable. I have replaced about 4 3rd party lightning cable and still in the source for a good reliable one.
and still, it's cheaper than getting the original cable..which, I think, original cable might spoilt anytime also.

Damn sad ... Iphone 4's cable lasted me forever ...

I've already bought around 8 pcs of lighting cable cause they keep spoilting

I started super gluing the area where the wires meet the heads cause it seems like that the weak point. So far so good.

I also opened up the spoilt one to see and its really not well made, there are 4 wires and they are connected BY JUST THE SOLDER ... WTF is this, means you pull abit also can disconnect one of the wires easily ... China goods are supposed to be getting better ...

Must be the competition that forces them to sell cheap and do shady wiring.

The original apple one has a problem too if you 'twist' the cable ... My son sometimes go and touch the phone while charging and the cable twist a few rounds ... After that also spoilt.

Now i waiting for a new type of cable to see if it works cause the FLAT lighting cables sold in Qoo10 is also horribly made, after a few times, you end up with a head that needs to be flexed to used.

Stupid invention ever ... Should have stuck to the big iphone 4 type.

How you use de? My lightning cable used since iPhone 5 launched Sep last year. All perfect condition. I purposely go epi to buy 2 more - 1 put in car, 1 put in office. At home de, I'm using my iPad mini lightning cable.

In total, 3 original Apple lightning cables. All in perfect condition!

Your son how old? My 7yrs old daughter has been touching my phone/iPad mini while its charging too. Basically its user-problem, how you teach your kid, with all due respect, don't mind bro. I tell her, you take up this way, you put back same way.

Your son take, twist (like oreo biscuits? dunk next?), your lightning wun spoilt is fake...bu huai shi jia.

My kid 2 year old ... Haha ... I don't let him touch the phone one but sometimes he does manage to touch it while i didn't notice, u know like bathing or cooking, etc ...

It might be a little different from you cause me & my wife are 24 hrs 7 days with him ... I guess you should be working so time with kids will be 8hrs a day i guess ... 'Alot' less chances of your kids touching your phone.

Anyways, he also did touch before my ipad 2 wire (which is the old iphone4 type) and the OEM cable never has a problem even thou its a 3 yr old cable.

But kids aside, i spoilt a couple of cables in the car itself ... Nothing to do with kids ... Same reasoning, twisting, usually when i randomly stuff it into the box to keep ...

Again, i would say, i didn't change my habits and with iphone4, i did the same thing but the old cable never spoilt on me before ...

I might not be as meticulous as you guys but now i'm comparing apple to apple (iphone4 cable vs iphone5 cable) under similar circumstances so lets leave the personal habits out of this topic.

Cheers
