The following 2 photos are taken using the 2 different mode, Square and Photo.

I did not change any setting. Why are photos from Photo mode, the colour so vibrant one? HDR is off already. It looks so saturated, unnatural.

From my understanding, HDR is preferably used when you are taking landscape views especially when the foreground or background are darker and you felt like the details on either the foreground or background is worth capturing.

Photography experts, am I right or wrong?

If it's too near, turn off.

No right, no wrong as of when to use HDR. As long as HDR turn out ok, else just switch it off. Most do HDR on landscape anyway, seldom see people HDR on food... but some did and they look great.
