Use with eSim is an additional option to free for physical Sim in empty slot, can have option to use in Future.

IF The main card lesser data and sign up data plan for eSim or physical Sim that is what I can do.

If you have enough data and not going to Oversea, most of time just stay in SG , why needs 2 cellular in your phone.

Maybe itchy hands spotted 😓😓

How is Dual SIM battery life for XS given that the battery is rather small?

its not specific to iPhone, if they roll this out to all android phones, it will be the same.. it is the telco that is charging it, apple is not forcing any charges to the telco for using esim.

yes i agree that charging $5 per activation is abit too much, hopefully after it becomes the norm, the fees will be waived hopefully?

oh yes, according to the CSO, first time activation is free, only subsequent re-activation is 5$

Apple could've sold all iphones with 2 physical Sims just like China market but they didn't. It's not like there isn't enough space inside the phone.

Charging $5 for each reactivation is absurb. Technology is supposed to make life simpler, not the other way round.

Technology is making it simple. Getting rid of physical sim to reduce plastic. No need to go get a physical sim card for your overseeas data, The goal is to shift entirely to eSIM, It is telco's greed that is making life hard not Apple.

Actually it’s good markets like in Japan ,
They put on vending machine to selling in Airport.

The eSim is a advantage , very easy to add in profile.
Capture the QR-Code and simple following the step will work.

Such as data plan for 1 weeks or 1 month can easily buy.

No issue without Sim eject pin for emergency purposes.

But I dunno why the telcos must be make money from the existing customers.

Not many countries you travel to will have eSIM so easier to have home country as eSIM. Also you won't need whatsapp/facetime for that eSIM line, primarily calls and data and more importantly the convenience of not carrying 2 phones. My 2 cents.

They're accomplice, and you think telco are so easily sweet talked by Apple without gaining anything in return? And you really think apple duno what would telco do when proposing this idea to them? This is the exact duplicate milking process of nano sim where they've gone esim in the first place but didn't. As mentioned, Apple could've easily make iphone physical dual sim available in all markets. But it didn't happen.

The idea of esim is good, don't get me wrong. Just don't act angel by saying cut plastic good for environment while justifying for recurring reactivation cost to be paid by consumers - they are the ones who wanted to do environment good right?

And if apple wants to justify for environmental friendliness, first make sure they use USB-c (not lightning or whatsoever special proprietary cable) just like all other smartphones in the market. This itself saves more plastic and material cost than a mere tiny 1cm sim plastIc.

Definitely esim has more benefit in own country usage. But everytime change phone must pay $5 which sounds like being penalized for changing phone.

Oh trust me the telco are not getting sweet talked at all. They are on their own in this. Apple and Google are just pushing them there with HW support for it with a clear sight of ridding sim cards for good. I have good sources and friends in places who shared this when questioned about it why Orange made it first.

The thing about telco that they generally do not move out of their set infrastructure until they are pushed by competition or by their lifeline. For this case their lifelines are, phones, tablets and enterprise customers. eSIM is looming around the corner, it will only be a matter of time it comes into full effect as OEM need the space for their HW. Just like the headphone jack on phones. Wearable go straight for eSIM. IoT tech also eSIM.

There are reasons why China has HW sim card trays cause China’s resistance against eSIMs. it is easier to push the rest of the world than to push china to change. Look at their iCloud Service and in the end they had to get HW servers in china to host all of china user's data in there for.. regulation reason. How Apple is going to continue this once eSIM comes to full effect, my guess is that they will only sell the Plus size devices for them in the coming future with the sim-tray or hopefully by then CN has adopted eSIM and in-fact they might do so very quickly.

USB-C will come eventually to iPhone since the iPad Pro and Macbooks are now all on it. It not just any USB-C it is a Thunderbolt 3 USB-C. You can actually see the pattern as they go.

I see the eSIM now on a transitional period.

Imagine fully eSIM when the telco and/or software is not ready (12.1.1). At launch, people will be angry and sales will be affected.

Next generation iPhone may see most iPhone with 1x physical SIM and 1x eSIM to cater to markets where eSIM may not be available.

It may take 2020 or later for Dual eSIM to appear after the markets appreciate eSIM and adopt it. You currently see Durian Man in Malaysia
Offering eSIM for Oppo and Xiaomi phones. Soon others would follow as OPPO and Xiaomi are popular with emerging markets consumers.

Actually, if you ask me. It is not excessive to charge $37+++ for conversation of SIM. To reinstall the eSIM at $5, cheap compared to a physical one at $37+++. Then again, we are assuming that we do not change the physical SIM now so that’s why we have this unhappiness.

One challenge I see is, when my phone is sent for servicing beyond the same day, I would have to pay $5x2 to move to another phone and back to the original phone once the repair is done. How often is that? We do not know. Probably once per 1 or 2 years?

Should wait for Starhub and SingTel for the meantime.

Otherwise M1 will be the good in benefits, cause nobody competition yet.

I just converted my Starhub S plan to $75 plan comes with 30GB data.
In future everyone will be following as well.

No worries you will enjoy the best values one.

Regardless, it still doesn't justify the milking process time and again. Doesn't matter which color telco got it first if they're going to charge consumers, no importance (to me) at all. Has technology really make our lives better if you think it in this way? How hard is it to eject sim tray or lazy until need to pay money for esim to make life better when changing phone? There is a difference between practicality and cost of benefit. What phone improvement have they made with esim technology too? Almost none at this point in time. The same as what improvement to the phone without headphone jack? None too. What I know is our lives didn't improve with all these changes and created more mess. Better option is to unify the big leaders to talk about long term cost saving and less wastage before jumping into it :/

China doesn't need iphone to survive. This has already been proven with the weak sales there.

See what I mean, Apple coming out with another proprietary USB-c cable. Instead of focusing being environmental friendly in the first place to join forces with every smartphones which have been using USB-c cable for >2years already. I hope regular USB-c could be shared between android phones and iphones in future or we are back to square one. Seriously idk what is apple doing with all their messy cables management instead of saving earth with less material wastage. What's wrong to use the same cable as everyone else :s22:

It isn’t about China it is about Apple. Apple has a market to reach for in there. You have to be looking at things from the other picture. Market decision are made with reason.

The USB C isn’t proprietary at all. The port still works as per normal like USB it is just a Interface standard that in fact is the best for USB-C supporting 40 Gbps speeds. You really need to read on thunderbolt it is the work of Intel and Apple together and it is making changes already and leading the USB C push in PC and more.

SIM card has not progressed either. It nothing but a waste of space. Another port that oem has the seal for ip ratings and in Singapore you are charged 30+ for a piece of plastic. I rather tAke the 5 dollar any day.

Headphone jack one less cable to manage and untangle from your pockets.

Wireless is the end game goal like it or not. Bluetooth and even wifi tech can and will be pushed to cover the short falls of cables soon.

Of course Home line in sg uses esim while the physical Sim slot is for overseas use, what so big deal.

I dun think anyone will do the opposite.

The moment apple releases a physical dualsim iphone in china exclusively but not the rest of the world, you know that it is trying to be funny. I wonder why isn't apple able to sweet talk the telcos there (china) but instead pushing ours like what you said? There are many countries which are not using esim too. Given a choice of china iphone and ours, i (and many many people) will gladly take the former one if telco is selling both here. My ideal is simple, unless you've worked out that there is a real benefit of doing sth, or else don't do it. Why jump the gun when many countries are not ready yet.

Thanks for highlighting on the usb-c being non-proprietary and it's a great relief to hear that finally! As a consumer I am more interested to know if it is going to be another messy cable management or not. Wouldn't make any difference if I read up whatever special cables (transfer speed at 1million Gbps) if they are going to push out anyway, right? Like no headphone jack, well people read up cry roar suicide also pointless, they're going to remove it by using lightning-cable connector instead of usb-c. Then when iphone change to usb-c connect, the old earphones have to be thrown away (environmental friendly?) due to incompatibility or buy another dongle :s22:

Courage in what is right. Just like the headphone jack and floppy disk. Sometimes you just need to do the uncomfortable thing and go with it.

Right now the world is shifting to USB C we will see note USB C in everything portable. Thumb drives to SSD external hard disks. Majority of the world are on legacy ports now it will take time to be unified under USB C. Thunderbolt interface has won the War in USB C. It not going anywhere any time soon as it is used in PC monitors, GPU, eGPU. Laptops and storage drives. People just have to learn to adopt and adapt to the rapidly change environment of tech.

Wireless is the answer to headphone jack. It will get there.
