I will be in Osaka from 1-4 Jan and Kyoto from 4-6 Jan.

May I know if Kuromon Market and Nishiki Market will be closed during the new year period? If so, closed from which day to which day?

And Kuromon Market or Nishiki Market is a better choice?

Other local things to try

I'm a local living in Tokyo and i think apart from sashimi at Tsukiji market, you should also check out unique themed cafes such as Kawaii Monster Café in Harajuku where you can immerse yourself into colorful atmosphere with “kawaii” and “oishi” sweets and pasta.
If you want to try out many kinds of food, a walk-and-eat tour in Ueno would be fun! There are so many shops in Ameyoko street you can eat almost anything from Dorayaki to Kebab You can get all these great meals for cheap price! (Ameyoko yaki for 200 yen and a croquette for 50 yen. Incredibly cheap for Japan!!)

My overseas friends also tried an app called Trabble.. they say it gave them some good food recommendations too! Hope this helps

Any Tsukemen recommendations?

Fuunji at Shinjuku. We didn't try the Tsukemen but we saw many Japanese who did. But prepare to queue, especially on weekends.

Kaiseki comprises of seasonal dishes, I've only had it once at an Onsen Inn together with Kobe beef.

if you want to try any kyoto specialty, can try their kyoto style sushi.
tried izuju at gion area
another kyoto specialty food is tofu.. can try nanzenji junsei near the nanzenji temple..

For me is making bookings for restaurants that's difficult.

They don't allow foreigners to book so I have to get local friends to help make the calls, very paiseh.

Himatsubishi Biccho at Tokyo Skytree is decent for me but only 3.47 on tablelog.
