main usage is probably google mapping and train timings so dun really need the speed. its the coverage im more worried about. i have free credits for a free 3 gb which should be enough......

Coverage wise in hokkaido area, both sofbank (Airalo) and docomo (Ubigi) are good. Dead spot only occurs if you travel inside deep tunnel anyway. During my journey ride there in the car, i seldom encounter any signal drop, only a few times when i was in yoichi area where there are a lot of tunnels, then the signal goes down to 2 bars.
hmm, my usage is more tokyo nagano kanazawa kansai then tottori. probably will be doing some hiking to higher spots.....
city areas all 3 should have good coverage. you can always download offline maps to minimize issues also.
