AI says median hawker size is 84 sqft. Given median rent is $1800, median rent psf is $21.4 per month. High or low?

This median rent is fake.. becos the other main cost is hidden into misc fee and cleaning fee ..etc which can easily be $800 to $1500 for a stall.

Look at those malls around us.

The rental and GTOs are crazy.

take rent liao, take gov money liao , still need to skim 15% of the stores profit ?

You misunderstood. They did not take 15% of the profit. They took 15% of the revenue. That is a huge difference.

I guess the reason why they took a percentage of the revenue is that this allows them to know how much they can increase the rent upon the next contract renewal.

This predatory practice should be banned. It is information asymmetry.

LOL this whole SEHC started with Amy Koh since 2018 . At that time, many MPs alredy raised questions regarding the viability of this hawker centre model and it's impact on livelihoods of the hawkers. Fast forward 7 yrs later and it seems like nothing much has improved...NEA better wake up !

Yup, how can it be socially conscious when you invite a private f&b company to run a HC.

Just take away the two words. Go back to state-run HC.

less operator profit
= less portion for your meals or lower quality Ingredients (e.g. reuse same cooking oil for weeks)
= less healthy population
= higher healthcare expenditure
= higher insurance premiums
= less disposable income
= more cdc vouchers to help the poor
= more problems “‘fixed” when the problem was created by themselves
Totally agree. The lesser the profit, the more corners they are forced to cut, the more unhealthy Singaporeans will be. And people are cooking at home less.

It’s a hidden national health issue.

Running a hawker center must be a social mission for the govt. Means just cover costs.

It's common for shopping mall's to take a cut from those tenants. But i don't think it should apply to hawker. It's already serving cheap food.

Not right.

This is just the rent itself. So how does $21.4 psf per month compare to other places or countries?

The operators claims they are social enterprise and use such names to bid for project and sell their name. The tenants hawkers never say they are.

Greedy landlords. Socializing cost, privatizing profits.

But EDMW cannot complain. We always say what's wrong with earning more money?

At least his is a 100% private entity not funded anyway by taxpayers money.

All these nea hawkers are build and pay by gov and mgmt fee given out annually in tune of $5 million for the so call social enterprise to operate. All these beared by taxpayers. Thats the main difference.

Sinkies ... really clueless siah ..
Then shouldnt all the HC transfer to those profit driven private entity instead? Isnt that wad paying tax is about?

The article still didn't explain what is social enterprise hawker centre, other than having a social mission. Like that might as well call all landlords social enterprise as they too have a mission.

Who say nothing happen?

Eggmy retired and wash her hands off the matter.

We enjoy higher prices, higher rent, poorer cleanliness and cleaner who are forced to become robot standing at the central wash tray.

Only when the laundry is left out to dry on a rainy day that such malpractice is uncovered and yet no punishment whatsoever. Such is life…only when viral then malpractice gets attention.
