I didn't read up much on the latest Alienware X51 R3, so finds it rather surprising to include support for their Alienware Graphics Amplifier. I wonder do they really need it since the internal discrete graphics is already user-accessible. Yet the amplifier itself is also bigger than the X51 R3 chassis. There are also availability of mITX oriented mini higher end cards like R9 Nano and GTX 970.

I seriously think having the support is kind of white elephant since buyers will otherwise opt for full fledge PCs if they end up wanting even higher end graphics performance card. This stunt is probably to brainwash buyers into believing that the amplifier actually complements their X51 R3.

I seen x51 paired with titanX in the graphics amplifier. Without the graphics amplifier, I think the x51 is limited to gtx970 due to space and power supply constraints. The newest x51 r3 comes with full Skylake quad core so pairing with graphics amplifier makes some sense than pairing with low power dual core CPU.

Otherwise it is also good to wait for nvidia next generation power efficient gpu to stuff inside the x51 r3 without going beyond its power supply limits

the good thing is the main component that generates heat is separated from the Alienware X51.. but kinda weird to have 1 slim PC (Alienware X51) and beside it a rectangular box (Alienware Graphics Amplifier). not to mention you need 2 power plugs (1 from X51, 1 from AGA).

TBH, Dell Alienware series is totally new to me. dun really know much of this sleek machine, so everyday spend 1~2 hours come here to learn some new knowledge, get to know 'chim' term and ideas from experts, like Ohayo, MoneyFace, xiaowhois, wasad and the others.

Not only Alienware series, also learnt something new on Dell Inspiron 15 7000 4K UHD touchscreen plus Dell Inspiron 24 7000 with Intel RealSense with Windows 10 Hello etc.

So my conclusion is if I really want to get a Dell laptop, will consider Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series.

The size is also a bit bigger than surface book.
The price of a max out XPS15 is cheaper than a max out Surface Pro 4..a full mobile quad core i7 against a mobile dual core i7-u

surface book is definitely smaller, the screen is only 13.5" compared to the 15.6" screen of XPS 15

As stated on the website, it says that the Xbox controller is optional which i presume you have to purchase separately. Keyboard and mouse are not included as well. I suppose this means you only get the box.

Consoles settings are limited, but for the Alienware Alpha, it is simply just a regular PC squeezed into a small compact console size. This means that you can get better performance and graphic settings compared to consoles when gaming. Sadly, it does not support the Alienware Graphics Amplifier and I would be interested to see how their 2GB graphic card fare against the newest AAA titles in the market now.

Steam is pushing out their games to be played on console together with their Big Picture mode. I can see great potential in this.

Perhaps Dell Alienware should collaborate with Steam to give them discount coupons or some free games to redeem with their purchase of the Alienware Alpha. After all, their Alienware Arena https://na.alienwarearena.com/giveaways has been quite generous in their giveaways

Nah other review sites already confirmed the packaging does includes a single Xbox One controller in lieu of keyboard and mouse.

Yes surface book is still smaller but also the XPS15 is alluring how Dell managed to fit the power in the small package. If there is one thing I find missing is the numpad on the XPS and alienware laptops.

The insprion 15 7000 uhd is on display at challenger shops, the size and weight to me is acceptable, and it managed to include a numpad! The left and right sides of XPS and alienware laptops have enough space to add a numpad

this docking station with graphic amplifier is from MSI, similar to Dell Alienware Amplifier connected to Alienware R3 or R2.

But not sure it this MSI docking station compatible with any laptop such as dell inspiron 17.

Oh so dell is not the only one having a graphics amplifier device for its laptop.

AMD first came out their external graphics idea, termed external graphics platform or in short, XGP

Also using proprietary connector based on PCIe. That time the PCie consortium is also deriving specification for External PCI Express. But seemed that performance is so bad and the lack of popularisation with exclusivity of connector technology to AMD to make them dropped the entire thing, and move on to Thunderbolt....

So AMD is the first, looked like it wasn't a hit like the MSI one or Alienware Graphics Amplifier.

I think in due time when the wireless specs mature, alienware may look into doing just that. The graphics amplifier is a sign that alienware dare to research into unconventional means to make interesting gaming systems.
But gamers will need some convincing to do something wirelessly, the common idea is wireless is bad for gaming

Not easy, even for wired connections, there will be some lags between different connections. I think most of us have our fair shares of being "killed" due to lags in CS or soldierfront. The wireless specs really need to improve a lot more to convince hardcore gamers.

Alienware 17 R3 already cost $3599, Alienware 18 may cost $4000-5000, maybe Dell sees the local consumer market not there~
Most Singaporeans are price sensitive will just settle for Dell Inspiron 14 7000 at 1/3 price

its a norm for 15" laptops to have numpad. the 15" MSI laptop at my home also has it..

I don't think this is a good idea. Cool packs/Ice pack and the such will never work because of the condensation issues and will produce moisture which will cause liquid damage on the laptop internals.

So please do not try this on your laptop.

Same goes for vacuuming to get rid of dust, please do not attempt it as it will cause large static build up. I think i have mentioned it previously in this thread before.

Huawei mobile phone has this Gel cooling technology which I guess does not have the leaking problem.

I think Dell Alienware can borrow this technology for use in their Alienware R3 laptops or even Dell Inspiron 7000 series laptop.

i think you're forgetting how much heat a laptop can produce, compared to a smartphone
