This happend to my Z1 compact too, so i can testify it's a genuine fault in xperias.

The problem with trying out a phone camera at a store is you cant bring the photo home for real examination with you unless you secretly bluetooth it over into your device. Ive tried it before with the Z5 and it takes ages to send over something that is 23MP in resolution

hannor i find it weird how they manufacture their screen display in such a silly way :s22:

yup somemore at telco the shop not v conducive and restrictive as the security wire attached to the phone is irritating lol. need to find a friend who owns the phone to test play usually but v few friends using sony

Sony should sack their mobile cam software division. So much for good camera hardware. Their optics customers did a better job with their own software.

Samsung: Brings dual pixels to the S7, a true DSLR feature (seen in canon 80D)

LG: Showed the world how manual mode on android camera should be done in 2015, world's first manual mode video on V10, world's first dedicated wide angle separate camera on the G5

Xiaomi: One-ups the G4's OIS by going 4-axis, implements DTI for noise reduction on Mi5

Oppo: Working on in-sensor OIS as of 2016 to remove the need for gyro and motor

Sony: Hey our camera has been the same 20MP, no OIS, f2.0 shooter for 3 years but look at our camera modes:
sony-xperia-z1-review-camera-sample-ar-02.jpg

this is a real thing, a real team of software developers put time and effort into this

I knew Song Augmented realty is very good fun but image compression with lesser noise is very much behind its rivals.

what 'very good fun'? all the time invested into that useless gimmick could have been put to better app development features like better manual controls, it so ironic that LG, a company that doesnt make its own digital cameras, can put better controls on their camera app compared to sony.

I mean yea there's stuff to be said about noise and processing etc but every brand has that to a certain degree. The G4 for example seems to suffer more chroma noise in low light and low ISO compared to rivals.

But at least LG and others make an effort on the software, sony's case is both hardware and software totally cant make it. I got the feeling that the 'superior auto' mode on xperias was there to compensate for the lousy postprocessing. Other brands dont need a superior auto because they already superior to sony

Unless you download all the AR plugins and play with friends and kids will you know whats the fun. Its so underrated. Its rendered in 3D realtime, better than those post processed superimposed 2d graphics.

I agreed they focus too much on these and totally forgot the essential camera software is not desirable.

If sony optics are bad, how can you explain Apple, Samsung and the like using theirs. And with it ranked top on DXO mark. Only Sony camera software is crap. Period.

Apple, samsung etc only use the sensor from sony. The lens is their own, the ISP lies within their SoC (exynos, snapdragon etc), these are non sony hardware pieces.

Sony's xperia phones use a separate discrete image processor hardware called bionz which they love to advertise as being just like the similarly-named processor in their professional cameras. In reality its probably responsible for the noise reduction results that makes even broad daylight photos have that fuzzy look occasionally at full res
Example (my own photo from my Z1 compact) https://i.gyazo.com/599df5b0f65af65ba12bd99f9fe10ce7.png

Now on to the lens on the xperia. I cant say for certainty with the current Z5 generation but the older generations had plastic lenses. Im not recommending to go to try this for real on a display unit but say if you use your fingernail and press hard into the camera lens. It will literally deform under pressure and bend inwards just from your finger's pressure.
Example of lens wear on xperia device http://i.imgur.com/1jPleet.jpg
Also the polarizing coating wears off super easily (HTC One M8 famous for this problem).

So... yea I definitely do think sony's hardware isnt that top notch. The sensor is just 1 of the ingredients and its not enough. You could forego the sony stock camera app and use something else on the playstore like Camera FV5 or Proshot... different software, end result is still same (this is true for most phones, using a different camera app wont have drastic photo quality difference)

I had used Lenova stock cam software and the different is significant due to better image compression with less noise. Night shot is even better with long exposure unlike the stock sony one. With this, there is no need for any other 3rd party cam software which like what you said made no different to image capture.

Ive never used that app. How does it pull off long exposure on a phone that doesnt support it? Can it really deliver the full 20 megapixel slow shutter image?

Im just curious because to my knowledge, the camera driver has to be able to support it (and open it up for 3rd party access). For example my Mi4i is only able to do long exposure using the stock app and my LG G4 before the november OTA update didnt allow 3rd party apps to go beyond 0.7s shutter speed (only the stock app could do it) and even after the update, all 3rd party apps fail to record the correct shutter speed timing in the EXIF if they shoot more than 1 second shutter time.

About the issue with image noise, you may have a point, I just remembered freedcam and proshot have a toggle to disable NR and I used it before to avoid the G4's low-ISO noise reduction. It however doesnt address the G4's RGB noise issues.

I only used it on my last XperiaZL which is 13MP only. The night shot is brighter than what my eyes physically can see and the image capture is a bit long so i hugged it on a stationary object. I push and install with the phone rooted via twrp. If my ZL not spoilt, I wont even get the G4.

Im pretty sure the G4 got marshmallow pretty fast, before Samsung even.

But look at all the complaints on G4's MM battery life from software versions V20a through V20c, and you'll start to realise getting the new stuff fast may not be necessarily the best thing.

As a G4 user i spend 2 months on MM before going back to lollipop:
- the battery life was just too inferior

- the MM update broke SD card support for 3rd party apps. Any files created on the SD by 3rd party apps were unreadable by the PC when plugged in

- there were literally no benefits of the newer android, except the more granular control over app permissions, and in some cases the MM permissions were so annoying every time you plug in the phone to PC, you get prompt to grant permission for the PC to be able to access the phone.

Hope they fix the poor slow-motion video quality - this is the one big flaw of G4's camera. I used my G4's camera more than my own camera when I was travelling last year, and it was a shame I wasn't able to do nice slow-motion videos that I could have done with an iPhone 6.

Not sure whether you were speaking off M on G4 specifically or just android M in general. If it's android M in general, I disagree. I would prefer android M any day. Battery and RAM management are better. Overall, M is more polished than L, as many have said, M is what L was supposed to be.

Never see that granting permission everytime connected to PC.

I was speaking about G4 specifically.

Cant comment on MM in general as I do not own any other MM devices to compare.

MM's battery on G4 is a common topic that can be seen on reddit and XDA.

The SD card issue i actually went to service centre to troubleshoot. They on the spot took out their own G4 test unit running v20c, tried using 3rd party camera app to take photos. When they plug into the PC, all the photos are 0kb. Said they will investigate. 1 month later, emailed me saying it's simply all the 3rd party developers need to update their apps to work on v20.

The permission thing you never saw before? I got it all the time on v20. Every time you plug it into the PC there will be a message on the phone prompting to let the PC grant access to the files. Previously there is no such prompt.

Cool, good to know it was specific to G4, cos I was just puzzled with all those problems while I don't have any of those issues with M on my N6P or CM13 on OPO.

lol to me its not good to know.

If it were a widespread thing in all of MM, app developers would need to spring to action to ensure their apps work proper.

But this is a G4 issue its just 1 phone. 2 months and 3 software versions later, G4 showed no signs of the problems going away, which probably means the device's software support is already half dead. Maybe it'll still get newer updates, maybe even till android N but Im skeptical if it will run ok. Its exactly like how samsung did a half-assed update of their SIII from ICS to jellybean that ruined the battery life.

have to remember that every company puts a skin layer on top of their android and adds extra software. MM runs fine on 1 device not necessarily mean it runs fine on every device

Yes, I know, that's why I was wondering if your comment was specifically for G4 or not. Once confirmed, then I understood. This is one reason I passed of getting G4, I don't like its android skin, was really tempted to get it last year. As I mentioned on G4/V10 thread previously, LG really needs to improve their soft department. As of now, their soft dev team/lead sux.
