Used M1 Data Passport in South Africa in Aug 2016. I have two M1 lines, and I activated both lines with Data Passport and Network Lock. Bill came this Month and 1St line is no issue with Bill. 2ND line claim I have incurred MTN roaming charge of $399, and Vodacom roaming charge of $0.60.

I always checked my phone display and make sure it is Vodacom (top left hand corner of phone) before I used. And I have selected Manual service provider as Vodacom.

Called M1 customer service, but CSO said I have disable Network Lock and did not choose the right service partner. He insists the billing cannot be wrong.

Now it is their words against my words. Apparently I received several SMS from M1 during data passport activation and data usage warning, but none of them is about Network Lock.

Raise a billing dispute with M1, but not sure if it is helpful.

For those who intended to use this service, make sure you screen shot and keep all your SMS from M1, otherwise it is their billing against your own words.

I use to have this problem last time without network lock. But when they introduce network lock and data passport i have no such problems.

The good thing about network lock is when you got switch to another provider, it will disable data roaming immediately. Even on manual mode there is chance it will swtich network. I use data passport in HK, Malaysia and BKK. Very good experience

Once deactivated you can't use it anymore. Need to activate or subscribe again to use it.

I had the same problem when I used my mobile to do the activation. Apparently the system did a registration, followed by a de-registration.

So, its better to call the CSO for activation of the M1 Data Passport and Network Lock.

Don't do it using the mobile app or thru the PC.

Yes, but provided you have activated your network lock too. If i am not wrong, M1 is preferred network is NTT Docomo.

If you have activated your network lock, the data will only be activated on the preferred network of M1.

if the location you go have low signal of that preferred network, then switches to another network, then it wont have any data.

the best is to set your network manually once you land.

if i activated my network lock here in singapore with m1 operator, ( i suppose i called up m1), so i still need to set the net work manually once i land in japan?

You could or not.

even with network lock, you will still jump to other network. cos once your network lock is activate, if the preferred network is weak and jump to other network it will stop the data from activating on the jumped network.

Anyone used the data passport (KTF) in south korea before? How's the network connection there?

I personally used it in Japan (Tokyo+kyoto+osaka) last year, very pleasant experience and so cheap!

used before once when i went HK and China. I only registered for HK passport with network lock so when i went over to China for 3 days I switch off my data roaming and only use the Hotel Wifi.

when bills came, HK was not charged but i got charged data roaming for the 3 days when I am in China. I had a cap per day at $18 for Pay-Per-Use Roaming and everyday i hit $18. I confirm never use any data roaming cause my whatsapp msg all these never comes in until i connect to Wifi.

Called the CSO and she said even if you switch off data roaming settings in the phone, the phone can still be consuming data because of some background activities. Then she say the network lock only use in HK but i never register China's lock so data can still run when I locked onto one of the telecomm in China. Sian and lan lan paid for those charges I never use.

which mean if go japan, call up the CSO, tell them going to japan, and ask for network lock in Japan only. once reach japan, on the phone, need not to do any setting. all auto set up?

I don't think so. Cos I went China without any network lock and I didn't on my roaming setting I also didn't get charge in China. You might want to double check with another cso. I think the cso that spoke to you is talking nonsense.

If you switch off your data roaming and didn't on any network data you should not see any data passing thru the phone. Unless you got on data roaming then you will be charged for it.

You will need to lock to the specific network which M1 passport specify. if not, it will jump to other network when signal is weak and you will be on data roaming on that.

I think M1's preferred network is NTTDoCoMo (If i am right). So once you land, on your Handset, then do a manual search on network to NTT DoCoMo, after which it will register and it will stay on NTT, on your data, & data roaming.

but, If the signal is weak on any places and the network jump to another one, dont worry, if you got activate network lock, it will NOT on the data on that network. just search for the network again then your data will come back.

Do clarify this with the CSO to be really safe. You dont want unwanted surprises in your bill when you come home.
