I just come back from Japan (Tokyo) using the M1 Data Passport....

It's a nightmare , the speed using NTT DoCoMo was D*** slow can't even upload to Facebook and use Google Maps.

After 1 day , it said it reached my $100 data Limited ...spoilt my entire trip mood.

I have to buy a sim card from BIC at the 3rd days.
It's stated in M1 website that the reminder will be sent even if you are on Data Passport plan but that doesn't mean your bill will be above the cost of the Data Passport plan, i.e. just ignore the reminder or turn it off.

Prepaid SIMs in Japan cost $25 and up for 1GB of data within 14 days. For more than 2 weeks usage, the rates are typically $40-$50+ for 1GB/mth.

Just came back from Japan Hokkaido and was using data passport. Overall, reception was okay, but mainly only 3G network, though was good enough to surf Facebook, check Google map and the basic stuff. Youtube didnt work very well, took quite a while to stream short videos.

I also kena the $100 cap thing, so just called 1627 and they managed to resolve it for me within 10 minutes (call took only 1 min, very efficient for once).

Overall, i think not too bad if you are not a heavy data user, and more convenient, just make sure need to deactivate the service.

M1 Data Passport expanded into China with China Mobile / CMCC. $25 Data Passport (as expected).

Make sure you're using TDD-LTE Band 38/39/40 compatible device for usage on China Mobile. Otherwise you will only be provisioned GPRS (2G) only. China Mobile's TD-SCDMA (3G) is incompatible with the typical WCDMA (UMTS) used worldwide, including Singapore's networks.

Also, good for people that are getting Data Passport from now on (idk when it took effect but is definitely within this two weeks), M1 changed the Data Passport billing cycle (not from your billing date).

The minimum subscription period is one month and will be charged according to the date of activation.

The change of billing cycle is a very good move.

BTW what do you mean by the TDD thing? If the user uses an iPhone in SG, what does he need to know/do? Must use another phone compatible with China network?

no real problem in remote areas when i used M1 data passport in Hokkaido in may. Only time i experienced no signal was driving through tunnels.

Only 3G connection though from NTT Docomo. Was more than enough for whatapps, google map and simple web surfing.

Can I clarify that with data passport, is it only phone calls within the country I'm visiting will make use of my subcribed plan? While calling overseas (back to Singapore) will be counted as roaming and incur additional charges?

Phone calls are phone calls.
Got nothing to do with Data passport.
VOIP is still considered data and using your own Singapore data.

Hmm.. I have a feeling that the 3g/4g issue is not due to network but phone issues..

The Samsung S7 you buy here, might have a different set of supported networks as the Samsung S7s sold there.

Singapore's 4g network uses 900/1800/2600MHz and naturally, phones sold here have to support at least these 3 (higher end phones support more networks).

Since Data Passport only allows NTT DoCoMo, i'll only post the supported networks for NTT. 800/1500/1800/2500/3500MHz.

For reference, the old softbank supported 900/1800/2100/2500

Technically, if we were to use a "basic" phone that only supports the 3 available in Singapore, there would be areas in Japan with no 4G accessibility(which some users have complained about).

Double check your phone specs before going by googling the model number(For sony Z3, its D6653 for sg sets) of your phone to check supported networks :).
