May I ask, who will not choose the top level and why?
And who prefer the top level and why?

Noise travels upwards? Really?

Now, we’ve all heard of this theory before – noise travels upwards. Have you ever thought about whether or not the statement is true?

We would’ve learnt that sound travels in all directions equally, not in any particular direction unless purposely directed to be.

So then, why do we hear so many people saying that noise travels upwards? Is this just some “sales gim...mick talk” to sell you the lower-floor units?

Here’s what we concluded.

Obviously noise = sound, travels in all directions equally. However, as we all know, the medium which it travels through will determine whether it gets absorbed or reflected, correct?

There are materials and medium through which sound will be absorbed and not get reflected easily – mostly the foam-like, soft, “airy” type of materials.

Then there’s the brick walls and concrete and roads which reflect sound reaaallly well.

Take for instance, cars traveling on main roads. The traffic noise gets reflected by surrounding buildings and the road. If you live just above the street level, chances are the noise level will be quite significant.

But what about overhead expressways? We have found that the high floor apartments in buildings located 1 to 2 blocks away from the expressways still get a whirring traffic noise. Probably not as bad as the previous example, but still irritating for some residents.

Instead, the low floor apartments (below the expressway level) are actually quite quiet but of course they don’t get as good a view as the high floor units. The traffic noise from the expressways get reflected by the roads upwards and those which travel horizontally are likely to be absorbed by the foliage (usually around the same level) or reflected away by other buildings.

So here’s a tip – when looking for property to buy or rent, if you are faced with a high floor vs low floor unit facing an expressway, BUY THE LOW FLOOR UNIT!

Serious note – do open up the windows and doors to get a feel of the traffic noise before you put pen to paper.

Sound really isn't said to travel upward or downward. Sound is essentially propagated omnidirectionally, which means that it radiates outward in all directions from its point of origin. Let's look at something from most everyone's experience as an example.

When a star shell in a fireworks display explodes overhead, the light and sound radiate from the point of detonation in all directions. Folks in the bleachers at a park hear the clap of the blast, and those across the river will also hear that bang (but just a bit later). Anyone who happens to be in the vicinity of the display will hear the shock wave resulting from the detonation of the shell. The sound may even be heard by folks flying in a plane a distance away, and all these observers will experience the sound because it travels in all directions.

To say that a sound wave travels upward or downward is not really correct. We can direct the soundwave with a number of different devices (like a megaphone, for example), but when it leaves the point of origin, it will move away in all directions and it can be heard in any direction from the source (though the amplitude will be different here or there).

wow amazed. i didnt noe physic learned in school is applicable in hdb. anyway, singapore getting crowded. everywhere is the same...unless one is rich enou to get EC in those secluded areas like seletar...definitely quiet.

has anybody received their appointment date for 5-rm fajar hills BTO. I am very scared that it will clash with my trip date.

What's the rate of choosing? Is it 15 mins per appointment or less frequent? The 4room Clementi Ridges take up rate looks quite slow.

Where got cheap. That money I can buy landed property in neighbour's land already. With swimming pool somemore. Dunno wtf they doing one pui.

I realise they are doing the room by location. Meaning to say 4 rooms by location.. after finishing fixing the appt for all location for 4 rooms they will start to fix appt date for 5 rooms by location..

I saw the march bto the statistics for the how many chinese, malay, indians and others.. all 4 rooms..

they may as well wait for May bto come out, then release our appt together with the May bto application results. :s27: :mad: :vijayadmin:

for ur infor,

the bto nov 2011, they do the 3-rm first. coz i applied in the exercise. correct me if they also go do other first.

now they reversed. they do the 4-rm. :vijayadmin:

I think they start at 8 a.m. until 5 including 1 hr lunch. So 9 hr x 2 = 18 queue numbers each day.

Units taken up after first day:
163: 28
165: 36
175: 18 28 32 36 38 40
177: nil
185: 16 17 18 37 40
187: 21 35 39
189: 06 35
191: nil
Total 18 units
Most popular unit: 6x 175
Most popular level: 2x 18, 28, 35, 36, 40
