Yes, there is. I learned this many years back from an investing class.

One way to spot abnormality is to read the auditor's report.

When an auditor spotted something, they usually will put it into their report. So if anything goes wrong, they will use the report to cover their backside.

You just need to learn how to read between the lines and understand what the auditor is trying to say.

Please huh... FATA Master must know this.

n00b question here. i seldom touch stocks, so i really dont know.. haha.
how can we access the auditor's report, for every stock in SGX?
As well as american stocks?

thanks in advance :)
You can go to SGX website to search for company reports.

Auditor's report are usually just 1 or 2 pages in the financial report.
Thanks for sharing

read this one is it? :o
Here is the auditor's leepork for Eratrat Lifestyle

Auditors are not infallible.

Auditors are only there to report whether or not the financial statements have been drawn up according to the accepted rules.

Addendum:

AFAIK, here are some signs of a developing situation at a company when it comes to auditors.

A. The financial statements are late.
B. The auditors refuse to sign off on the statements.
C. The auditors are replaced by another firm.

That is eerily similar to scientology!
(I had very annoying first hand experience.)

Anyway.... in the course provider industry, there is a jargon for their customer..
it is called.. we are going to target all the seminar junkies.
Seminar junkies will keep on attending seminars... and they will find their knowledge is not enough..
they will attend another course.. they will find their result differs from what is said..
they willl attend yet another course..hoping to find that holy grail..
and the cycle repeats..

the material is very very beginner.
Some formulas are wrong/simplified, cause the actual formula is very long and tedious.
You try to study Finance Degree in 3 days?

But if you like to get to know more amateur investors with same ideology (buffet strategy) ,It's a good place.
Not that they don't have professionals. But the professionals are busy making money from seminars or their own investment.
No time for you.

The company behind this course has just went IPO in Australia last year 2014. Initially, I was excited because if the company can go IPO, surely its value investing course must be damn good.

Based on what I researched, it is quite disappointing. See this Motley Fool article.

http://www.fool.com.au/2015/04/27/could-8i-holdings-ltd-shares-be-worth-9-cents/

Incidentally, the company’s listed securities business held shares worth $6.6 million as at September 2014 while the Investment business held listed securities worth just S$691,000. Performance according to the prospectus was unremarkable – matching the index in most years. 2014 net profit was boosted by a huge jump in the sale of investment securities and a number of positive one-off items.

They are not really that fantastic investors themselves. Back to the same old question. Are these investment gurus making more money teaching than investing themselves?

What really irked me from the Motley fool article is this;

Interestingly, the Millionaire Investor website says, “Our system for picking the right stocks that will make you 39.07% returns in just seven months!”
Now that’s the average return on six stocks covered as case studies
– but clearly it could be worded better. Interested applicants can’t sign up for the program either – you need to attend a 2-hour seminar first – and costs of the program aren’t mentioned anywhere.

Unimpressive actual investment performance but deliberate hyping up its performance to appeal to people's greed by cherry-picking the best winning stocks.

There are many investing trainers who claim to want to help people. But are they helping themselves or others? I don't mind if they earn a good living if they really help others. However, if an investment guru tries to appeal to your get-rich-quick greedy instinct, he is doing more harm than good. Of course, he will be the main beneficiary. Who isn't attracted by "earn 2 years salary within 2 months. Sack your boss and be financially free in XX months' time"

If you really want to learn about investing, you can do it for free. Read good books, read good financial blogs (those without hidden personal agendas or at least openly disclose vested interests). HWZ Money-mind is quite good too. There are selfless forummers like ShinyThings who share generously. Stop paying thousands for 3-day investing courses.

Hi terryhoho,

You are absolutely right. Paying thousands of dollars to learn in 3 days is an insult to those who invest for a living. I encountered highly accomplished high-networth investor who said even ten years may not be enough.

Oh, by the way, the market capitalization (8IH:ASX) is >AUD280m today. Net profit is around 4.99m. The PE ratio is 56 times. It really pays to be value investing trainers. I hope these people do not recommend their own stock in their value investing course.

PS: Moderator, I think it is better to continue discussion on old thread than to start a new one.

I need to see the relevancy. If relevant yes, if digging for the sake of it, no.

but not everyone have the discipline to read learn from books.
Go to the typical man on the street, ask him to read the book to be financially free I bet he wont do it. Heck, I myself didnt read any stupid books. I didnt even read securities analysis.
some need a teacher to teach. Reading a book takes months. A seminar will summarize the book in days.
Furthermore, most books teach a lot of nonsense. there's a lot of padding text, and useless story telling inside. You have to differentiate what's really useful and what's nonsense.

The time saved going for seminar can be worth for most ppl.

If it works for you, fine. Different strokes for different folks.

Still, consider for a while. If you are willing to spend thousands for a 3-day course, why aren't you willing to borrow a free, good book to read? You can re-read a book if you cannot understand certain sections. You cannot rewind certain sections of a 3-day course. Sure, you can ask questions. But are you sure you can absorb enough to ask good questions during that short period of time?

some need a book to learn. Attending a seminar takes months/years to find a right one. A book will summarize the seminar in weeks.

I replaced books with seminars and it still rings true...:s8:
