Bring your own water. I'm amazed how much money I can save on softdrinks just by lugging around a 500ml bottle (which was given during a volunteer activity). Each can you save at retail is $1.20 a pop...

Borrow books from library - learn and be entertained at the same time. :)

Agreed! bringing your own bottle of water to work saves at least $1 a day. That's a total of $365 of savings yearly. It adds up!

review your subscriptions for cable tv, mobile and telephone lines.

our local telecos are well-known to charge full listed prices once the contract is over.

Ya, I face that situation before. Just when I am very cash tight and wanted to make some savings, friends got married and I need to fork out ang pow. After that, no more savings...

My salary is just too little to support my lifestyle which is already very basic.

im 23, working as a financial consultant and studying.

-Savings via endowment plans (discipline savings)
-Liquid savings via SC 1.88%

Its important to save but at current inflation rates in our country, its impt to find a place that provides better interest returns that is closer to our inflation rates. else money saved gets smaller and smaller.

But at the end of the day, if you are earning too little, its still too hard to save.
Be a little more hardworking, and find more money making ways!

my 2cents worth:)

What is Community Health Assist Scheme | CHAS

for your home elderly if meet with the requirement

What is the Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS)?

The Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS), formerly known as the Primary Care Partnership Scheme (PCPS), is one of the Ministry of Health (MOH)’s programmes to help provide accessible and affordable primary care to Singaporeans.

Under CHAS, patients receive subsidised outpatient medical treatments for acute and chronic conditions as well as basic dental services at General Practitioners (GPs) and dental clinics near their homes. These patients will also enjoy subsidised referrals to specialist outpatient clinics when required.

For patients with chronic conditions, CHAS works in conjunction with the Chronic Disease Management Programme (CDMP) allowing Medisave usage for the outpatient treatment (of the same set of chronic conditions) covered under CHAS. Besides enjoying subsidies for their chronic disease treatments, the patient could also tap into their Medisave to defray part of the cost of these treatments. The Medisave withdrawal limit is $400 per Medisave account, per year.

From January 2012, the qualifying age for CHAS is 40 years old, lowered from the previous age of 65 years old. The qualifying income criteria is $1,500 per capita monthly household income, raised from the previous $800. For instance, a family of four with a monthly household income of $4500 (resulting in a per capita monthly household income of $1,125) will qualify for the CHAS.

If you wish to save, some of the typical burden are mobiles services and gadget you can cut. Pre-paid card are the way to go for mobile services. If your company have agreement with telco, sign for a corporate plan if you can.
Gadgets like high-end phone, pad, labtop are never ending games.

Instead of learning how to save one should look at the other side of the equation which is to earn more income. If you are already tracking every single cent and find that there's no way to cut anymore, earning more income is the answer. For me i take up a lot of freelance jobs whenever there are opportunities, and they do add up to some decent sum by the way. What are your interests, are you able to design website, logos, if so you have a market. Just yesterday i went for a focus group study for just 30 mins and i mange to earn $40. Be creative!

Delay purchases.

Eg : If you see a shirt you like, dont immediately buy. Take note of the price and shop, go back in next few days and buy it. This way you can prevent impulse buying and by the time u go back second time you might not like it/want to buy it rede.

Most of you whom posted in this threads are damn misers.... :D But I have to confess I m not exactly a spendthrift too. I think saving money at the expense of personal wants needs to be controlled but as one forumer puts it, if you focus too much on increasing your wealth and don't enjoy life, what is the point in life? You earn money so that you can enjoy it, not put in the bank or in the proverbial biscuit tin and hide under your bed and don't use it.

I read that some people in this thread will prefer to take public transport even though they can afford a car. I m not too sure how much is their tolerance for the current transport system but all things being equal, (e.g. IF the cost of travelling by car and by MRT/bus is the same, which is not possible but just for discussion sake), I would like to think most will gravitate towards the use of a car for transport.

I do not spend much personally but I believe in getting a car for to me, it buys time for me to do more things, earn more money. I believe in buying time where possible, I also believe more in earning money rather than saving money. To me, earning money is FAR MORE effective than saving money. Of course, when you earn money, you must have the discipline to save a portion of it too.

And lastly please don't eat plain rice with dark soya sauce just to watch your bank account grow exponentially. No point! :D

I always had this issue of unexpected costs when I was in university. I thought for many days, read some books in the library and decided to keep track of expenses and save up for the unexpected, also known as rainy days . When I bought my second car, I also set aside a little each month in case of unscheduled maintenance and fines. Over time, with careful driving, I didn't had to use the money so I invested part of it. The emergency fund is now self sufficient.
