Just called MR hotline. She told me that yes if I upgrade now, I will have to pay 58 bucks for one time fee. I asked her, so if I let my contract expire, and I decide to sign up again with MR, I still have to pay 58 bucks? She says Yes. She says if I want to secure this 49.90 promotion even though my contract ends in June this year, I will have to sign up now and pay 58 bucks.

I have been a great supporter of MR because I was sick of the big 3. Now this is what I do not understand. The Big 3 in the past would be actively sending me vouchers in order to tempt me to recontract months before my contract expire so that I would not have the chance to think about going to other service providers when my contract runs out. But here, if I want to recontract and continue with MR after June for the 1GB plan, I have to pay 58 bucks first. Do not understand the sense in that. In that case, I will just wait until June, let my contract expire and then decide who gives a better deal then, does that make sense?

Hi,
I also had the same question as you because my contract ends in Jul 2014. One of MR Management Staffs told me that when they call to schedule for appt. Request to finish your contract first then do the installation. In this way, it will be considered as a recontract and the OTC fee of $58 will be waived.
Hope this help. :)

I mentioned previously that the management staff and CSO are quite misaligned and I rather take the words from the management staff.

Hi Civician,

If your contract expires and you recontract, the $58 is waived, (basically if you are on myrepublic and on the day of installation you do not have any existin contract) your $58 is waived.

Some of our CS guys are temps so might have be confused. I will talk with the CS team again.

Do note there are some very odd cases that may not be tracked well and in such a case if you think you are being mischarged for $58 we will refund it. Just drop a note to Johnnny or nivleK1985

thanks.
Cheers

Hi Lawrence!

don't think you will remember me cos we briefly met in the some IT Show a couple of years ago where I signed up haha. So, does this mean if I can register my interest now to upgrade to 1GB without paying the 58 bucks and when my contract ends in June 24th, it will automatically upgrade to the 1GB plan?

Also, can someone tell me, if I am connecting directly the router to my PC, will the router model matter still? I do not use wireless. I am using the ERS600 I think....

Whether the $58 is waived or not depends on the date of installation.

It will not automatically upgrade to 1Gbps plan as there is an installation of the new ONT (and new ASUS router if you opted for one) at your house.

Can I check if I am able to purchase the rt-n66u from you all? As I do not need to get the AC series but the n56u does not have the external antenna.

I'm interested to know a little bit more about the network upgrade MR is doing in preparation for the influx of the 1gbps plan subscribers (myself included). Anyone know or have any idea what is going on in the backend?

Hi All,

I also need help with regards to choosing the router choices if recontracting to the 1Gbps connection. From my conversation with MR Staff, the previous router which is the Engenius ESR9850 will not be able to support the new connection. So, I am deciding between N56U and AC56U.

Some details about my home setup. ONT is in living room and I am using Homeplugs to get connection to my router in my room.

I was thinking to get the basic model N56U but I googled and research around in the forum and seems like quite a number of people give negative feedback about N56U especially wireless connection.

So, is AC56U worth getting because I think my setup bottleneck is my homeplugs.

I am not a network expert and are most probably going to leave everything as default as possible with just setting up a WPA security.

TIA to anyone who reply. :)

I doubt so.

Wired - N56U is better
Wireless - AC56U is better

You also need the ac wireless adapter on the other end to fully utilize the AC56U router.

If date of installation is after your contract expiry date. I promise you there will be no fee.

Ok then how should I proceed now? My question is should I call in to upgrade now and ask for installation date after 24th June? Or wait until June then call, which by then I am afraid will take months to come install. Thats the dilemma here.

Hi gasband, hope you don't think I am a busybody for answering your question.
According to the staff I spoke to from MR, you can submit request now(To Chop Place) and if someone called for installation, you can request to do the installation after your contract date.:)

Nah of course not, i am sure everyone here wants to share information! Thanks for that. I think MR is confusing alot of people here with this promotion....even their own people are confused.
