You mean the retail box version of the Core i7-6700K comes without stock cooler??? or comes with stock cooler?

Based on my BizGram price analysis, seems like we pay $100 extra for hyperthreading support. Please read my analysis in the other post.

What cooler is recommended for i5-6600K overclocking? And how much?

Skylake K CPUs do not bundle with any cooler. I doubt you did any research on this. With that said, it also mean stock clock speed doesn't mean anything since you can overclock the Core i5 to 4.0 GHz easily with a simple multiplier raise, ceteris paribus. And Core i5-6600K to Core i7-6700K is still a whopping $185 premium.

As for RAM speed, don't quickly jump to the last paragraph and read their comments, i quote the images and direct you to the charts for a reason. If you still think a DDR4-2400 8GB kit costing north of $110 has more value than a value bare DDR4-2133 8GB stick of $60-70, then so be it.

I believe we have given you enough guidance and evidence to tell you which CPU, motherboard and RAM models are more prudent and wise to get. Its your money after all. :s22:

Guys,

Pls also recommend me some Micro ATX casings with windowed side panels and less than 400mm (40cm) in height.

I have received two recommendations for mini ITX casings but need some recommendations for Micro ATX casings as well.

Looking at low profile casings.

But is the Thermal Take core v1. side panel windowed? It seems that it has vents and graphics noise is a problem to me.

Stop being hypothetical and start reading online article to find out. Without any vent, your graphics card will run rather hotter and (hence noiser) since it needs to draw air from the remaining chassis vent further elsewhere. If you want low noise, chassis with internal panel sound dampening foam will be your best friend yet it can only reduce this much. Seriously you think a fully sealed (rather thin) side panel can stop sound from resonating through it?

I agree. There is no way to avoid the sound if you want a properly ventilated and cooled system. Unless you want passive cooling all over which means really shitty cards or really huge heat sinks.

Pick your poison.

If we overclock it, It will be higher. And now being an Nvidia green shirt converted forcibly recently, I'm now extremely conscious about (and should be as a green shirt) power consumption, as do all Nvidia fanboys (used to be an AMD fanboy for 6 long years where power consumption is of no issue to me and 300 watt AMD cards are of no consequence to me)

And its performance is equivalent to a stock i7-6700K (4Ghz, 4.2 Turbo boost)). The stock i7-6700K, when not overclocked, is 91 w as well.

What's the extra wattage needed to drive an overclocked I5-6600K? How will it impact my Singapore electricity bills?

Let's consider a scenario,
Based on SLS pricing,
i5 6600K + Asus Z170i Pro Gaming is $638
I7 6700K + Gigabyte H170N-WIFI is $740

We overclocked i5 6600K to get i7-6700K level performance. So in the end, i7-6700K is $100 more expensive than i5 6600K. I understand this is not entirely true as the Z170i Pro gives USB 3.1 functionality. But let's take it out for simplicity sake. So I'm actually paying about $100 more for hyperthreading and larger cache. I'm not sure if I want to give up the opportunity? Also, an overclocked i5 will burn up electric bills faster than a stock i7. So the price difference is actually < $100 ??


As for RAM,
But if we are talking about 16GB, the prices are
Crucial DDR4-2133 cost $140 (16 GB)
Corsair LPX DDR4-2400 cost $208 (16 GB)
The difference becomes $68, not sure if its too significant.

Hi, I will be posting the motherboards that I'm considering soon in a while. I will also need to get a casing and a power supply. Currently leaning towards Seasonic Power Supplies as I understand they manufacture themselves and are rated highly.

On a side note, if I'm running a GTX 970 and an Intel i7-6700K, how much power supply do I need? 650 watts or 750 watts? (assuming I do overclock the intel sucker some time later). Nvidia Pascal and AMD Polaris based GPUs are power efficient, so I'm just concerned about power draw from an overclocked CPU. I read somewhere an overclocked i7 can draw an extra monstrous 80 watts more. That's totally unacceptable to me considering how expensive things are in Singapore. KFC used to cost $5.50 and now we got two small chicken for $7.70.

My old power supply is a Cooler Master 1000 watt Silent Pro bought 6 years go and honestly I think its just plain overkill.

I don't think we've manifestly deviated away from topic because you raised a query on i7 maximising frame rates...

Anyway skylake unlocked processors don't come with coolers. Have to go with market coolers which equates to more spending.

Anw like I said, i7 would bring minimal gains as opposed to improving your graphics solution. I rather you save the money and just go with a i5 and improve your gpu when next gen arrives to make it vr ready.

I7 to i5 only brings less than 5 fps improvement depending on title. On the other hand, gtx 970 to 980 can go any where from 15-20% improvement. Games don't use hyperthreading now and I don't think they would heavily rely on ht anyways.

If don't want listen okay lorh LOL not my money anyways...

As for motherboards, go for the cheapest option with the functionalities you need (m.2 etc.) If you don't need the functionality, avoid it altogether (raid, overclocking, multi-gpu). Asus has very intuitive bios, msi and gigabyte are good mix of price and quality. Asrock is the cheapest but still very decent. Eliminate slowly from there

I think I phrased myself wrongly as I should have said I'm getting either an i5 or i7 Intel CPU to raise fps due to my AMD Phenom II X4 965 bottlenecking my GTX 970 in Grid 2. I'm still open to discussions.

BTW, which aftermarket cooler do you guys recommend to pair up with the i5/i7? I assume we should get a high end cooler IN CASE I decide to overclock the Intel sucker 2 years down the road?? My budget for cooler is actually around $50-$70. Will that get me a good cooler that can overclock these CPUs?

I read on some game boxes that the recommended specs should be an i7 etc. How serious should I read those recommendations? Am thinking 2 years down the road (that's 2018), when my PC upgrade is in its 2nd year, will most game boxes recommend an i7??

The problem is I already bought a GTX 970. Unless some kind gamer here is willing to buy my mint Pali GTX 970 at 95% price so that I can get myself a GTX 980 and just an i5?? lol

I have decided on some motherboards. Will be posting up soon. Just need some good Micro ATX AND mini ATX casing recommendations with less than 400mm (40cm) height.

If you are not getting a Z series board, there is no need to go for i7 6700K, a i7 6700 will do.
You can always overclock when needed, so the power consumption would not be high.
If you care so much about electricity bills, just get the Non-Overclock chip.
Maybe you can think this way, you buy the i5 6600K with Z107 board, dont overclock now, will save on the electric bill, in future, when there is a need, you can overclock it for better performance.
for the rams, you can always buy the value 2133Mhz ram for overclocking. You will not notice any difference between 2133 and 2400

If u are thinking of future proofing, ask no question and just get the most expensive setup u can afford.

No expert or anyone can predict how the future technology will be and you want to future proof it?

Money will be better spent on getting the current techology for a setup which is the most relevant to you now rather than guessing what u will need in the future and buying them now which u may not even use in the future.

If you are really concern about the electrical bill for overclocking, i rather you use this effort by not turning on air con when sleeping at night.
The extra wattage comsume by overclocking is peanut when compared to the air conditioner.

You suggested If I'm not getting a Z series board, I should go for a i7 6700. But an i7 6700 base frequency is 3.4 Ghz while an i7 6700K base frequency is a whopping 4.0 Ghz and i7 6700 Turbo boost is 4.0 Ghz while i7 6700K turbo boost is 4.2 Ghz. i7 6700 Turbo boost all cores is 3.7 Ghz while i7 6700K Turbo boost all cores is 4.0 Ghz. So wouldn't getting a H series motherboard with a K CPU still makes sense just for the factory overclocked speed of the i7 6700K?

I might have gotten a non K chip if all the clocks are the same as the K chip.
But the non-overclock chip base and turbo speed is inferior to a K base and turbo speed as the K is factory overclocked. So the K chip is superior right from the start. That's what I'm thinking.

Can the value 2133Mhz RAM be overclocked? To what speed? You mean a H series can overclock a 2133Mhz RAM?

I thought a Z chipset automatically overclocks a 2133Mhz to 2400Mhz or something like that? I haven't bought the boards yet so I do not know how it works.
