there's always room for improvement and in the end, it's ultimately down to the user if the little things that make the difference matters. no right or wrong. u should spend on the things tat bother u (like the fps difference between i5 & i7).

The final hurdles to overcome is picking the casing and CPU coolers.

I prefer mini ITX casing after living with my ATX board for 6 years. But to my horror, I discovered my Palit GTX 970 is a 2.5 slot card that wont go into a Thermaltake Core V1 with windowed casing.

See the pic inside http://www.overclock.net/t/1515948/official-thermaltake-core-v1-owners-club/450

So what are my options for mini ITX casing? (prefer windowed ones so that I can see my Palit inside) I understand that Phantek Evolve ITX has windowed casing but its priced very high. If I want to spend so much on casing and CPU coolers, I might as well go X99 mobo + 6 core.

The way I looked at the video was different from you. I paused the video several times, taking note of the fps between the various CPUs. And I noted somewhere between 5-15 fps difference between the i5s and i7s during heavy loads. Its especially striking in GTA during the part when the helicopter swoops down towards the building. The i5s drop fps while the i7s are holding their ground. Yes, most of the time, most of the games, we wont notice the difference unless we are running FRAPS and looking at the counter.

Yes, the i5 is a better value in terms of performance/$ just like the GTX 970 I bought earlier is a better value compared to GTX 980 in terms of performance/$.

It is usually the case that higher end products give diminishing returns. Just like some of the ppl like to say i5 is a better value (I do agree its a better value), GTX 970 is a better value (same goes for AMD R390). For those who are gaming using GTX 980, I hope they are gaming on 2K monitors as GTX 980 on 1080p is overkill most of the time. GTX 980/Ti is probably more for those who love to see nice nice fur such as hairworks. But of course, that's how Nvidia works, using proprietary tech to make ppl buy more of their fatter profit margin higher end 980s.

I wont buy Ferraris as they seem to be at risk of burning into flames lol..Seen so many videos...maybe a Chery QQ is better lol

since you already have the idea here, there is no need to ask/discuss/compare i5/i7 anymore, you should be able to decide it yourself, after all, its your money.

BTW, for casing wise, can conside the following
ITX:
Fractal Design Node 304
Corsair Graphite 380T
Corsair Obsidian 250D
Lian Li PC-Q33B
Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV

mATX:
Corsair Carbide Air 240
Fractal Design Node 804
Fractal Design Core 1500
Silverstone SUGO SG02-F
Fractal Design Arc Mini R2

a lot of choices

BTW on the software side,

Currently I'm running windows 7 64-bit home premium on my Samsung 840 Pro SSD.

I just can't pluck it out and plug into the new Intel rig right?

I still have two CDs with CD keys
1. Windows 7 home premium 64-bit (this one should be for my present AMD rig)
2. Windows 7 home premium 64-bit (this one comes from my spoilt Acer laptop)

So what are the problems that I may encounter?

The dude at Video Pro told me all they need is the CD key and they can settle for me sui sui. Is it true?

Please advise.

Thanks for the casing recommendations.

Initially I'm gunning for the Thermaltake Core V1 as its a mini ITX casing with windowed panels and is very cheap and looks nice and kool.

But I've mentioned earlier my Palit GTX 970 is a 2.5 slot card that probably wont make it into the TT Core V1 (its really sad...)

See http://www.overclock.net/t/1515948/official-thermaltake-core-v1-owners-club/450

So what are my options for mini ITX with windowed casing now besides the Phantek Evolve ITX? I'm being squeezed out of options.

Any recommendations?

If I really don't have the good fortune of going mini ITX, the backup plan will be going the micro ATX way, and Thermaltake Core V21 comes into the picture...But its 6.5 kg compared to the 3+kg of the Core V1...I prefer lightweight...

FINAL DECISION?

FINAL DECISION MADE (Hopefully)

Dam...

Forgot I running out of disk space...so adding in a Sandisk Ultra II 480GB secondary storage into the setup..Samsung Evo 500 is better but who cares...SSD vs SSD is barely noticeable...so now have to sacrifice CPU to get more storage, if not how to install games? Motherboard can't sacrifice as the motherboards I picked has M2 support

My mini ITX rig (tentatively)
i5-4690K + Asus Z97i-Plus (DDR3) $575
Seasonic X650 (cant do SLI nor intend to SLI in mini ITX, so 650 watt is sufficient) $189
Fractal Design Core 500 Mini ITX Case (just for reference) $99
G.Skill RipJaw X 1600Mhz C9 (8GB) - going to reuse existing old Corsair Vengeance 8GB for total of 16GB $89
Air Cooler (TBD) $100
Sandisk Ultra II 480GB $228

Total: $1280

OR micro ITX rig (tentatively)

I5-6600K + Asus Z170M-Plus (DDR4) $576
Seasonic X750 (getting 750 watts for M-ATX in case wana play SLI) $219
Thermaltake Core V21 $89
G.Skill RipJaw X 1600Mhz C9 (8GB) - going to reuse existing old Corsair Vengeance 8GB for total of 16GB $89
Air Cooler (TBD) $100
Sandisk Ultra II 480GB $228

Total: $1301

Still within $1500 budget with spare for next purchase of Asus 144 Hz 1080p monitor.

What do you guys think?

Anyone can recommend a mini ITX motherboard with DDR3 support AND support for i5 skylake ? I cant seem to find. That's why I am forced to pick i5 haswell.

for 2, the board is using DDR4, your old DDR3 cannot use
btw, why u want m.2 slot and not use it?
Dont think there is any skylake itx board still using DDR3, only 1 mATX Z board using DDR3
Can use the link below to check
Click here to choose your mobo

Asus
H170I-PLUS D3 is using DDR3 (ITX)
Z170M-E D3 also using DDR3 (mATX)
Asrock
B150M Pro4/D3 (mATX)
B150M-ITX/D3 (mATX)
MSI
B150M BAZOOKA D3 (mATX)
H170M PRO-VDH D3 (mATX)

I paused the video several times and saw that the fps of the i7s are indeed higher than i5s on many occasions, but not by much. It was a slim victory for the i7s. But the part when the helicopter swoops down towards the buildings in GTA, the i5s drop quite alot. Not sure where is the bottleneck, was it also due to graphics card or RAM limitations?

I look more at facts first, before listening to the opinions of the tester. Just like MoneyFace earlier posted a Eurogamer chart proposing that RAM does not factor much into performance (was it what he posted?) and yet the Eurogamer tester concluded that gamers should shoot for DDR4 2666 as the sweet spot.

We can discus all day and I guess at the end of the day, if I want to save $150-$165, I can go for i5. If I got the money to splurge, I can go for i7.

I personally find that i5 + GTX 970 is the perfect gaming machine for a 1080p monitor (for now).
I don't think you are quite following my argument... Pls read again...

M.2 is just a form factor. Can be m.2 pcie/m.2 sata.

Z97 has pcie 2.0x2 while z170 m.2 has pcie 3.0x4 bandwidth for the m.2 SSD. If you are going to get a top of the line m.2 SSD (sm951, 950 Pro, etc.) Then you might want to get the z170 chipset because z97's bandwidth will limit the sequential read of the ssd.

If it does not bothers you, forget about it.

650w psu does what it does just a like a 550w psu/500psu and x650 is really expensive for what it does. Get the Superflower leadex silver 550w psu at only 119 dollars.

I got my x650 at a relatively cheap price.
