The whole side of the mountain broke off together with the glacier and dropped more than one km into the river valley below. The impact huge enough to register 5.2 on the richter scale.

They shouldn’t build the gyirong port and immigration centre along the river bank. It’s difficult for the people to evacuate, they have nowhere to run.
Yes but anything that is only talk about in hind sight isn’t fair to them. I dun think it is something most had thought about before this thing happen.

You should have told the Chinese govt about this before 2014, the year that giant gate building was built.

this is the type of rehearsal they perform in a region prone, predicted, advised will be hit by glacier outburst u think sufficient?

You should have told the Chinese govt and also the UN before 2026 instead of waiting till after this disaster.

Given the mountainous terrain of the area, I doubt there are much choice in terms of suitable locations. The tendency for road construction is to follow along river courses in this sort of environment.

I believe the Chinese government knows that the incident will happen, therefore organized the rehearsal recently. They have the technology to predict glacier melt down. Should have asked the people to evacuate that area beforehand.

I'm curious why the protruding large rock will drop off as well. i thought is just the melted glacier that will drop off.

pretty amazing how poor nepal can mobilize assets helicopters restore bridges send relief to their rasawu district by the border crossing area which is at the same level with tibet gyirong port to rescue survivors on day 1 within the golden 90hrs meanwhile tibet side wiped out completely n rescue efforts claimed to be "blocked" n deterred due to 1 single entry point.

Following the flooding, the Nepal Roads Department began installing bailey bridges to replace collapsed bridges.[78] The Nepal Army delivered eight tonnes of relief supplies to Rasuwa by 27 August.[106] The government launched a psychosocial counseling and telemedicine services program for migrant workers and impacted families

girl who got rescued, Timure village and the Rasuwagadhi border area sit just about 3 kilometers south of Gyirong Port across the Miteri Bridge.

while their own media still bashing the nepalese gov rescue efforts for being slow

Wow Bailey bridge
Similar to the acrow panel bridges out SAF combat engineers used to learn
Can deploy a semi-permanent bridge within a day

good old NS days
Your writing presents an optimistic projection of ground truth.
Where's the PHOTOGRAPHIC proof that the Bailey Bridge is actually being installed?
Is it only starting to be installed last week Thursday (27 Aug)?
Or only this coming Thursday start to install (3 Sept)?

From your beloved BBC source 78 quoted in your post: https://www.bbc.com/nepali/articles/c1wxn9705gyo

26 Aug: "According to preliminary estimates, the damage caused by the construction of 19 bridges and 40 kilometres of road is estimated to be worth Rs 15 billion," Bijaya Jaisi, director general of the department, told BBC News Nepali.
However, officials have made it clear that it will take time to get the exact details of the damage caused by the floods.
He said that a bailey bridge will be installed from Thursday in the places where the bridges have been washed away. "We also have Bailey Bridge and have requested friendly countries like India and China to provide it as well," Jaisi added.
Officials did not say the number of bailey bridges requested from the two countries.

These two pictures are adjusted properly for camera height, so that a better comparison of the height of the mud is clear. The focal length of the lens and distance is different, but it should be enough to deduce, everything is under the mud.
The pressure at the depth of 20 to 30m (about 10 storeys) is enormous, about 3 atm.

Pressure = density x 9.81 x height

so yes, around 3 atm if assume water density

Think maybe they think too much. Worried got another natural dam burst. Find it strange also, can send drones and helicopters in survey the custom area, why don't drop a few men in from helicopter at first instance also. Maybe worry too much of the potential further danger bah.

Think perhaps its one of the few limited areas with enough flat land connecting both sides that can build crossing and structure bah. The rest all mountains. But its a high danger zone lor, with 3 river intersections anytime can burst the bank.

Think they should really consider building higher ground temperory evacuation points in the immediate surrounding mountain side area for such dire emergency, instead of just evacuation out of the area, which think takes more time.

Think they just prepared for general cases where they think they have enough time to evacuate bah. Ma-na-zai got such extreme case where they have only minutes to escape. The irony is think this rehearsal was only weeks before this disaster happened. Think they really should set up temporary high ground evacuation points in the immediate mountain side for such emergency bah.

the rehearsal is that many people stationed there or more?
Think if not wrong, beside the immigration staffs. There was also a small village beside the custom building in the direction where the mudslide came down and first hit. Doing trade with visitors and tourist perhaps.

Think that area in the past was where human settled down also on both sides. Also there was the large bus deport with alot of buses bringing tourists and visitors in and out of that border area and NP also.

Think its one of the only two routes connecting both CN and NP. And the closest to NP capital. So think a very vibrant and economical trade route where most of the people would tend use to cross between CN and NP bah.

Add all together think the number of people in that area could be somewhere between 500 to 1000, or more if busy day perhaps.

If not wrong, saw one of the the media mentioned. Think it goes something like with the global warming, as the glacier melt, think the permafrost ground below containing water also warm up and melt. This thus loosen and soften the soil below and result in the ground holding the water easy to give way also.

Think got mentioned that they can and are monitoring the water level rising at the lakes and take preventive measure. But they cannot know when the ground below is going to loosen and give way. Which think is this case also bah. Thus hard or no way to monitor at moment. Maybe this is something they have to look into going forward.

WoW there are actually many survivors at the border crossing! One of the survivors said the debris flow was over in 3 minutes. Climbed 15 feets up mountain side in the rain. Some people behind got swept away while climbing.
