good point about the shadow area in the kitchen.

yes, the in-wall units are a consideration. The PoE will also be convenient for any IoT devices.

If you need 2 in-walls, the incremental cost is 1 additional IW. It's an elegant solution for those who don't like ceiling mounted APs.

My flat is among the last batch w/o a patch panel built in. If not I would whack 3x IW instead of 2x AP. Lol.

Yup. That is what i did. Tap from my bombshelter. Any way this setup dont have TV bundle. Coz i didnt subscribe. Purely internet access only. So ONT only use 1 port.

Access Point right in middle of the house

Tp - ONR(bridge mode) - router - managed switch - access point.

Covers whole house without any blindspot.

your layout 100% same as my resale 4rm. Instead of AP, I might put a router..not sure yet

Hi all,

Need some advice for my new 4 rm bto flat that I will be moving in within the next couple of months

I'm totally clueless on networking. The current flat I'm staying in I just connect my desktop directly to the router using the lan cable and the tv and phone access via wifi.

below is the floorplan of my new flat.

Can advise how should i go about setting up the network?

My considerations:

- My main priority is still connection for the 3 bedrooms and the living room The rest of the area are not important.

- My desktop with no wifi capabilities is located in bedroom 1. Ideally this should have a direct lan connection to the router.

normally people will install lan point at every rooms, you can connect using lan cable to your pc, or connect an wireless AP so that you can using wifi.

if you don't want to install for all rooms, based on your requirement, install one lan point in room 1 (see picture). should be enough. from this lan point , you can connect a wireless AP and also a lan cable from wireless ap's spare port to your pc. the AP in room 1 should serve other 2 rooms adequately.

for living room, you can rely on the router at your DB.

DB install switch

ONT -> router -> 8p switch(connect all room with LAN) -> AP

normal router has 4 lan ports, don't need switch if 4 is already enough.

HDB got total of 6 LAN port
- 1x Shelter
- 1x MBR
- 1x Guestroom 1
- 1x Guestroom 2
- 2x Livingroom - 1 of the LAN port meant for Telephone convertible to LAN for other use not necessary telephone since most people have mobile. It's about time home phone to go away in the future.

In order to maximize and make sure all LAN port is ready. min 8 Port switch is recommended.

Default 3 in 1 router 4 port may not be sufficient. At the end it depends on what they want to do with these ports. As for mine. all ports is in use.

min should be 5 port switch. together with the ports on router, it should give 7 ports, still have one extra. if using 8 port, will have 4 extra ports.

better not, the provider will only ask you to pay for the most expensive plan, you may not need it.

better ask from the brothers here. state your requirements, someone will give you the answers, of course, not all are good answers, including mine.

in terms of figures, here are some numbers:

4k netflix/youtube video : 30Mbps per user at one time.

full hd netflix/youtube video: 8Mbps per user at one time.

ASUS is good too, can't go wrong with ASUS. Flash it with Merlin and you're good to go.

if it is good, you don't have to flash thirdparty firmware.

what you meant is it is not good enough, need third party to make it good.

Need Some Advice

Hey guys,

I was on the line, with linksys support and he mention that for a 1Gbps connection its normal to get a wifi speed of up to 300 plus mb/s.

Test via ethernet direct from the modem shows a speed of 1gb/s. But the moment it goes through the router, the speed drops to 300 plus mb/s. This is standing right in front of the wifi.

Any advice on whether what the support says its true? that 300mb/s is normal?
