TS, don't be so blind & simply attack other parties for the sake it through sheer ignorance.

Do you know the obscene amounts PAP spent on this election comparatively? PAP made the rules unfair by requiring huge necessary expenses & other tricks like gerrymandering boundaries. So opposition parties have to engage them in an uneven playing field, of which they will inevitably be forced into some situations beyond their control. This is perfectly understandable.

Why don't the PAP jokers ask why Vivian Balakrishnan can under budget the YOG games by 300million. And then have to make up the shortfall by siphoning from another ministry.

This is despite them being the most fairly & highest paid poltiicians worthy of their salary. So please, kindly as Vivian to step down before commenting on other parties.

Furthermore, NSP are simply asking for donations to defray the cost, otherwise they will still bear on their own. $35k is really little for a campaign like this. This amount is to be divided for the whole team, costs can easily go over budget in unpredictable events with sudden daily developments. Especially so where parties may be forced to make costly arrangements to counter attacks or exploit an advantage, or already fail in the middle of campaigning.

I feel the NSP team in Marine Parade achieved wonders in their campaign against a PAP stalwart. Where the purpose of SM Goh now has been revealed to be a bus ticket for TPL.

btw, in case you guys didn't know, TPL is under police investigation now for breaching of cooling day rules. Interesting developments ahead.

I saw this at her facebook page

(Excerpts , do click and see the full message)

Based on the invoices at hand to date, the Marine Parade Campaign expenses are well over $35,000 and will be borne by my team mates and I personally, as candidates.

I am legally allowed to ask for contributions from fellow Singaporeans. Hence, do consider if you could help.

**No amount is too small! **

Your contribution of any amount, will be very much appreciated!

Any excess over the amount required to cover the costs of the Marine Parade Campaign will be handed to NSP.

Yours sincerely

Nicole Seah

NSP’s Candidate on behalf of the NSP team for Marine Parade GRC

This appeals made me question NSP election campaign and their credibility as a party. It was mentioned that the appeal was to help them cover the cost of running an election , so did the members gathered a large amount of debt running this election. So was it just for the purpose of reimbursement of the cost , so it wont need to hurt their pocket and suffer any financial losses?

Next wasn’t there supposed to be a budget? does that mean they dis-regard their budget and went beyond their mean thus incurring such debt. If it is the case how are they able to lead a GRC much less a country if they couldnt even deal with a simple election budget. How can we trust them to run our country finance next time?. Isnt this akin to 3rd world countries spending more then can afford expecting the world bank to bail them out?

If it was because of bad planning , i am sure many Singaporean are willing to help for the sake of “democracy” . But if it was just to reimbursed their pocket just because they fail to win the election , It is a disappointment and i would say that they do not deserve our help. There is no such thing as a sure win campaign , Parties and its candidate are supposed to plan within their means and run the campaign expecting these cost as un-recoverable in the event they lost.

Look at the reform party , they may not have the largest voice in the election. But perhaps it is due to them being prudent , rather then spending money they do not have. So far from what i know , no other parties have ever made such a request and NSP “Marine parade” is the first. What about SDA lost election deposit who is going to return that to them?, There is a reason why WP is the most respected opposition party amongst the electorate , they spent what they have within their means with a clear concise strategy. Perhaps NSP should take a leaf from this veteran party.

Personally i find it of sour taste if their campaign to get back the money was to succeed. It would mean every dog , cat and monkey would run a election with enormous cost and expect us to foot the bill? making the process of election a joke

SO NSP IT IS OF MY OPINION YOU ARE A JOKE

I dunno about you but $7k for a 24 year old girl just out of uni is alot of money. I know I am a student too.

As for them gambling $7k to win $15k a month.....not sure if srs. I don't think anyone seriously thought that they can beat GCT. They already performed wayy better than expected with Tin pei ling self imploding. Highly doubt they are doing a mathematical gamble for financial gain here.
its not about out of uni or not..

its a matter of budgeting and having no $ in the end cos they failed to look at both sides..

er up until last week i saw RP and i think SDP (not sure about that one) asking for donations on their facebook as well. RP was also reminding people that they still have merchandise to sell to help defray election cost. are they at fault also? you think they professionals have alot of money to spare is it? you still seem to think 35k is a small sum. yes its not millions but to working class people that already is alot of money.

about the conjob i just said if u think they are trying to swindle there are ways to find out even if it turned out to be false. Nicole wasn't asked by the party to solicit donations. she ownself ask. if you du lan feel that she is being too much dun donate. she has never said die die u must donate else.

yes, they all could be asking for donations, think some of them ask for donations all year round :o but i do not see any of them asking for be reimbursed for even incidental expenses.

i also think sell merchandise is better than asking for donations to cover incidental expenses. again, my point about professionals being able to afford a few $K is simply a statement of fact. and stop talking about $25K ($35K minus gms donation of $10K) as if its one person's expenditure.

its also important that if you believe in the cause, you cannot expect not to spend a single cent of your own and expect the public to fund you completely.

no one mentioned con job till you did. the suggestion for a separate bank account is for accountability and transparency. its actually to protect herself.

bottomline, as a professional, if not able or prepared to spend even a single cent of your own money, please don't profess to want to represent the poor and needy.

did the NSP name drop her? if the party finds tt she's competent and is able to leverage on her to get more votes..why not? i can dare say tt even WP won Aljunied with the presence of CSM and his credentials....is not as if Nicole Seah is utterly incompetent and is only a flower pot rite and tt the NSP is shamelessly trying to gain more votes through sex appeal....

WP won Aljunied no doubt with help from Chen Show Mao. But even without him, Low Thia Kiang and Sylvia Lim would still have put up a strong fight and it is hard to say they would have lost without Chen.

Hardly the case with NSP. Who else was in her team? Who was in the Tampines team? Finding it hard to answer off the top of your head?

My point is simple. NSP over-relied on Nicole Seah, plain and simple. They did it to the point of neglecting all other candidates and even Goh Meng Seng did not utter a word to the press after Nicole Seah "took over" media attention.

Perhaps the kicker is this. How sure are you that NSP is not shamelessly trying to gain more votes through sex appeal?

Sigh this is lost on you.

They have budgeted. They felt that they can spend the money. They didn't overspend.

Now they are just asking for some help defraying the cost they have planned to bear. If you refuse to help, so be it, they will bear it on their own. This is planned. If you are kind you can help out and make their lives easier.

Do read over the university fees analogy again.

i dont think it is gamble. more likely testing the water.

last election, WP knew that Aljunied would be sweet ground to capture GRC. Marine Parade never contest before, so we dont know how good/bad.

Anyway, my bet WP will be contested on Marine Parade on next election. we know Marine Parade is not PAP stronghold at all.

You are a good example of a disunited opposition.

LKY can retire a happy man...

When the oppsotion should be putting up a united front against a mammoth hooligan like the PAP, some of their supporters still indulge in petty rivalry.

anyway..as what many has said...no one from NSP is pointing a gun at the public to get donations....if u simply think that the fund raising is dubious...dun donate loh...but many people will not see it this way....these 5 candidates knowing that they have next to zero chance of winning in MP GRC step up from their comfy life to provide Singaporeans with an alternative and a chance for MP residents to vote....they took 2 weeks of leave from their job just for tis "no hope of winning" contest....and even took 16k of their own money with the considerable risk of losing them....like many has said...they have nothing to gain by stepping up..most of these people are doing well in their professional life and they have no need to do tis....but i doubt that their motive through this donation drive is to defray cost for everything...and lastly...it doesn't mean tt they shd empty their bank a/c just becoz they love Singaporeans n want to provide an alternative for the people..like u say...they r professional working adults..not kamikaze wananbe politics.. and neither it is a law tt u shd use yr own money for campaigning

What the PAP spends has no bearing at all to this "issue" that TS has brought up. No need for strawman arguments that have no relation at all to NSP asking for donations. Those are for another thread, one which is, fairly, for exposing the shortfalls of PAP.

You are way too butthurt over this. Notice that there is alot more to the cost than just incidentals. Also I don't believe she fully expects to recoup everything they spent. I don't know how much donation they can get, but defraying a part of the cost will help them out. If you think $35k is nothing to cry over you obviously must be some rich elite miser of sorts.

Why are you hating so much over a simple donation solicitation?

not hate lah, if they really overspent reasonably, then list the items lah and supporters will donate. i feel strongly that incidental expenses like telecoms, transport etc should not even be in their list what.

for goodness sake, don't claim for mrt, bus fares, phone calls, incidentals like drinks, food etc. this means they are not willing to fork out a single cent of their own money. again $35K (should be $25K now since gms donated $10K) is NOT for one single professional, its for the whole team which includes the candidates, supporters and volunteers. even if candidates pay for it themselves, only a few $K EACH, which is negligible for a professional. and if they really still feel the pinch, then don't anyhow spend.

looking at how much others have obtained through internet donations, i expect the donation amount to exceed their stated amount.

how can u be sure tt they didn't spent a considerable amount of their own money for the campaign?....first thing first...they already have to come out with 16K each for the election deposits which fortunately they got it back...
The $35k appears to be the final amount taking into account everything in the list. Nowhere in her post did she state that the amount is after deducting their own contributions. It's fine and well that they managed to get back their deposit. Unless the deposit money was from some sort of a loan, then they should have no problems offsetting the campaign expenditure from the refund of the deposit.

You flatter me. Sadly if I had control over any opposition party, I would form a coalition with the Workers Party and form a united front.

Now lets look at facts and the leaders of each party. Can you touch your heart and say they are united? There are only so many things one can do, bear in mind, all of us here are part of the electorate, not decision makers in the parties. It is the part of the party leaders to prove to us they can effectively avoid three-way fights amiably and sing the same songs.

Looking at it from a gambling perspective is wrong in the first place. Assuming NS is just fresh out of uni and doesn't even have $7k, will you or the voters be confident enough that she will do a good job managing the town's finances when she does not even have the slightest experience managing a small sum of money.

have u listened to her speech...and her media interviews...yep..there might be a tinge of being over-rated by netizens...but she knows her stuff and is able to articulate it in a confident manner...true....she might have won some votes base on her sex appeal and wholesomeness....but Singaporeans as proven in tis GE...are wise voters..and most votes for her i assume are based on her potential and guts...how many 24 year old females have the guts to speak out against goverment policies in front of a political rally..u know..it's easier to toe the line than to step over the line
