then why list telecoms, transport, incidentals etc? these are petty expenses and one can easily argue would have been spent by individuals anyway. if they expect their supporters to spend such petty and necessary amounts to support them, then the professionals should jolly well not claim reimbursements for these petty daily expenses.

you wanna me tell you where the ERP and COE and misc. charges $ have went to?

GMS donated 10k, so he is into this fight.

The other party members "donated" $7k each into this fight. Not to mention risking $16k initial deposit.

So what is a good price for you that they should be paying? I say 7k is excessive especially for someone like Nicole Seah. If the public can help reduce this to 3-4k it does a tremendous lot of good.

How much did you pay for an alternate voice in parliament? $0. Yet you are raining so much hate on them who give up their own money for this.

Why are you so against this?

ok you know gms donated $10K so its only $25K for 5 professionals so average $5K each. is this too big a sum for working professionals? definitely not.

and they did not give up a single cent, on the contrary, they are trying to recoup even incidental expenses. that's the main issue i have here, without going into the incompetence issue of managing even an election budget, let alone a grc and town council.

and sorry, i do not believe in donating to any dog and cat for an alternate voice. any alternate voice has to be credible.

i dunno how long you have lived but surely, everything needs money?

Yup everything needs money. I do believe Nicole Seah has the money to pay for it. Donations are to alleviate her load, not to get her out of debt, a very fine distinction there that we must note.

I believe TS was irked by the perception that NSP has the belief they should be "reimbursed", hence the displeasure at monetary issues. Me? I have no problems with the donation. What I am riled is the fact that NSP does not seem to be presenting itself as a party, it is presenting itself as a modeling agency.

Donate $5k to the opposition of your liking then. Show me that this is not a big sum of money for you in a fight for an alternate voice in the govt.

They did not give up a cent? Then why are they down $35k now?

they have to spend money on transport anyway if they go to work but just because they are running for election, can claim this petty expense?

or are you saying they bought their private cars and are now trying to claim their coe spent through this donation drive? :s8:

You flatter me. Sadly if I had control over any opposition party, I would form a coalition with the Workers Party and form a united front.

Now lets look at facts and the leaders of each party. Can you touch your heart and say they are united? There are only so many things one can do, bear in mind, all of us here are part of the electorate, not decision makers in the parties. It is the part of the party leaders to prove to us they can effectively avoid three-way fights amiably and sing the same songs.

Can I say that this time they have demonstrated more unity than in previous elections?

The answer to that would be a resounding YES.

The fact that they have negotiated successfully with each other avoid any 3-way contests is prove that there is potential for more unity. This recent elections, only one GRC ended with a 3-way fight.

I am not calling for all opposition parties to agree on every single point of ideology or policy. If that were possible, there would no longer be a need for several different parties fielding different candidates. Everyone would just bunch up together under one political banner and fight the PAP on equal terms, as one big opposition party. As I have said before, that would be impossible. Party integrity is still very much the core of party politics in Singapore, and will remain so for some time to come.

But what is so hard about setting aside minor differences and not coming to blows at even the most trivial of things like how or for what purpose a rival opposition party would host a donation call?

I'm not aiming this at the party leaders and members. Instead, I am aiming this at party supporters too narrow-minded to see the bigger picture. For all you know, the party leaders would have a much more flexible approach to dealing or working with rival opposition parties than some of their supporters have demonstrated.

Looking at it from a gambling perspective is wrong in the first place. Assuming NS is just fresh out of uni and doesn't even have $7k, will you or the voters be confident enough that she will do a good job managing the town's finances when she does not even have the slightest experience managing a small sum of money.

very good point...sadly, some do not even care about the ability of their alternate voice.

what the f@rk ppl ask for donations also you complain?? not happy dun give la

You expect good calibre opposition to spend time AND money to be a voice for you, and risk not being elected and wasting all this money?? I am very sure if they elected, they will fork the money their own and no need to ask for donations

NSP is an evil and incompetent party because they listed telecoms and transport on their expense list! How terrible!

WP won Aljunied no doubt with help from Chen Show Mao. But even without him, Low Thia Kiang and Sylvia Lim would still have put up a strong fight and it is hard to say they would have lost without Chen.

Hardly the case with NSP. Who else was in her team? Who was in the Tampines team? Finding it hard to answer off the top of your head?

My point is simple. NSP over-relied on Nicole Seah, plain and simple. They did it to the point of neglecting all other candidates and even Goh Meng Seng did not utter a word to the press after Nicole Seah "took over" media attention.

Perhaps the kicker is this. How sure are you that NSP is not shamelessly trying to gain more votes through sex appeal?

disagree.

Hmmm interesting view, because I interpreted his post as bearing a view that parties should not solicit for donations (first paragrah: "so it wont need to hurt their pocket and suffer any financial losses?"; second: "3rd world countries spending more then can afford"; third: "they (WP) spent what they have within their means"). He judges parties by their financial statuses - if so, candidates and party members have to be rich in order to be "the most respected opposition party amongst the electorate"

Which is kind of uninformed, because anywhere else party campaigns are public-funded, e.g. Obama for 2012. And the funds to be raised are immense. I'm not in the US so I can't judge the level of accountability, though I feel that to convince more members of the public to vote parties have to be more forthcoming with the breakdown of their spendings.

Aaaand... Well when the Facebook page requests donations to be made directly to Nicole it's... quite obvious heh =:p

Sadly as it is in politics, all parties are individual entities and unless clear coalitions are formed, people will always be polarised by their party's line. It is a fallacy to ignore issues and "gang up" in order to fight another party, this is ignoring fundamental differences and sooner or later cracks will form.

The elections are over. The parties should take this one year to take a step back and see what has been done right and what has cocked up. Just as an example, money management is definitely one of the issues that a few parties have issues with and unless these are settled, it would be difficult to convert the 60% of PAP supporters out there. Disagreements are not just to expose flaws, the parties must be able to look critically at itself and not be mollycoddled by supporters. This applies to all parties including the incumbent.

Lets put it this way, if instead of calling on donations to defray past expenses, they call for donations to support the next campaign.

For example, Nicole quitting her job to walk the ground full time and visit the flats starting from now till GE2016. This will certain guarantee to boost her chance a LOT.

If so, will you guys gladly donate to support her campaign?I know I will

eh please you misunderstood my statement.

i am saying that the ERP charges YOU pay, and the COE charges YOU pay as well, have funded for a certain party's campaign so they don't have to ask YOU to pay more.

Please, quit flaming me or the opposition blindly. My respect for you have sunk tremendously into the deep bowels of the Negative Zone.
