My batt also drained 20+% while i was sleeping last night.
I checked and it showed that my phone was 'awake' when my screen was off.
How do i check what apps are running in the background and draining the batt?
That's the hard part - a lot of trial and error needed...hahah
Usual suspects include auto-sync of accounts - FB, Twitter etc
Fortunately, you can use System Panel - it does a good job of showing all the apps plus running processes and how much CPU time each of them took up...
You can use that to narrow down the list and then decide if you really need those apps

Some of the "free" apps are notorious for eating up bandwidth by constantly pushing ads to your phone even when the screen is off...
So you may want to consider blockers like Droidwall etc to restrict access...
I posted a guide a while back - it's very helpful and I certainly benefited greatly from it...hahah
