Really don understand why many parents r not speaking Mandarin to kids since born. Don they know that it is a mandatory subject for kid to get into a branded secondary school? In Singapore it is easier to learn english. Take a look at the tiong kids. They may not be fluent or speak english at home. But they pick up the language so well than local kids. With strong Mandarin background, usually they would score well for psle n secondary.

I cannot understand as well.. Like I mentioned, the weightage of subjects for psle system are the same. By ignoring one... Basically you lower the chance of getting good grades.

My kids cannot speak English until kindergarten.. Within 7 months can chat with our Indian neighbours...

You try Mandarin... Can anyone do it in 7 months.
Very hard, mono tone laugauge is easier to learn than multi tones.

Because my wife is Korean, so everyone speaks English for easy communication at home. But, I agree with you that mandarin is important, hence the reason for the tuition.
