in future when I start to create my ladder bond portfolio maybe I will start a new thread to teach about picking bonds and managing a bond portfolio

for now, I think this thread still mostly focused on stocks

but if anyone got question on bonds can ask me too
I tot of bond ladder too, but wat can we use locally? Sgs/ssb? Low yield though..

At least fixed schedule

Corporate retail bonds, no fixed schedule

For ppl in twenties, do you recommend bonds in portfolio?
Individual bonds or Bond etf?
any guideline for the bond % of portfolio?

Thanks in advance.

in early 20s no need bonds ba, can be more aggressive and go all stocks to grow your wealth first

bonds is lower risk lower returns

maybe pass 30 then start to put some into bonds, a lot of choice from the retail traded bonds.. over 10 different bonds now and in future will have more

most important thing is must know which stocks are for keeping and which stocks are for trading

stocks to keep are like dividends/growth stocks
telco reits banks are meant to be held for long term dividends

stocks to be sold are those cyclical or trading counters
SCI and KC are not meant to be held for long term one... they go from $6 to $12 then back to $6 again... endless cycle... only a fool will hold them for 10 years

some stocks for trading are those that are undervalued and may face corporate actions... like my pick on ARA/GLP/FCL... as I felt that the market was generally pricing these asset managers too low... so when it jumped 10-20% to close into its fair value... I will just sell and not leave any emotions behind

lastly to add on to reits telco banks... there will be a time to sell them, but do not sell all... its call rebalancing

example

if my OCBC increase from 30k value to 40k value... I do not sell all 40k worth of OCBC.. I will sell 10k worth of ocbc to lock in my gains and rebalance it back to 30k original position

cheers

Do not quite agree on Banks, they are also cyclical in nature. I will not call them as a true defensive stock but the 3 locals ones are 100% safe, if they are not I do not know what is safe.

banks a bit cyclical when economy slow down their earnings might go down a bit but in the long run i see banks as growth stocks that tracks the health of the asia economy

oh previously I was 100% vested as I did not have the 200k

only towards Q3/Q4 this year, I sold off my 30% stake in a private business that's why got the lump sum in which I quickly put in to FD/SSB to prevent myself from doing anything rash/stupid

no matter what this portion I think I die die also will not put into stocks one... at current point.. my thinking is it will be my "fixed income" portfolio ba

for now FD/SSB... in future will slowly vest into bonds to form a ladder bond portfolio

(those who do not know what is a bond ladder please feel free to read from the link below)
http://www.schwab.com/public/schwab...nvestment/bonds/individual_bonds/bond_ladders

if along the way I find any business opportunity, then may use this 200k to fund the biz however I think the odds of me taking this path is low

I had this idea with fixed deposits, where the fixed deposits are placed at x months apart, so that they would mature at in stages. IMO, this way more money can be placed in FDs with the flexibility of cash being available within a few months if necessary to avoid the need to liquidate an entire FD (and miss out on the interest) when the cash is needed.

I pitched the idea to my mum. She didn't like it. :(
