That is why I switched my primary line from Singtel to Simba.

Doesn't make sense to me that we've to leave data roaming on in order to get a simple mobile signal while traveling in order to receive calls and texts. Then without using Singtel for data AND we even have data usage set for use from a different line, charges like that still happens.

Sickening

Granted local connection from Simba loses to Singtel most of the time, but if we want to travel then really got to think how we can go about doing it without such nonsense charges and time wastage having to contact CSO over the charges.

I said "most" coz I'd to switch back to my Simba line for data last night when I couldn't get a network in Sheng Siong from my Singtel line. So ya, I won't rely solely on Singtel, especially not suitable as a main/primary line.

If roaming is important to you, then I will agree that Singtel S$15.28 plan is not a good choice as the main line because of high roaming voice charges and roaming data limitations.

At the same S$15ish 5G plans, Singtel MVNOs may be a good compromise to combine local and roaming needs as they offer pretty decent roaming data bundle -- especially Zym/VIVIFI with free 10 minutes free incoming roaming voice.

I tried Zym 4G plan with free 180days free 5G trial for 2.5 months and I will say it is pretty similar to Singtel S$15.28 plan for a local usage, only slightly worse in a few occassions.

Gomo and Singtel hi! can be another choice as well, with no support of roaming voice, but then also no worry about roaming voice charges.

If you are okay to pay more, the more expensive Starhub SIM Only plans may be a good choice as well, with free roaming voice and even free outgoing roaming SMS (not available from eight or SIMBA). The passion card offer will lower the price by quite a bit.

Actually new Starhub Prepaid S$15 plan is not bad either as it also includes free roaming voice and free outgoing roaming SMS.

The only roaming data bundle is the free 50GB DataRoam Monthly to Malaysia.
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/mobile/eform/simonlyplusform
SIM Only plan
12-month contract
250GB of 5G+ data
FREE 50GB DataRoam Monthly to Malaysia for next 12 months
1,000 mins
500 SMS
12 FREE months of Caller ID
12 FREE months of 5G+ Access
$15.28/mth

You will need to pay S$18 just for 6GB ReadyRoam Asia data, S$40 for ReadyRoam Worldwide. Really not worth the money (only useful to safeguard against exorbitantly high pay-per-use roaming data charges)

Roaming voice charge is also super high as it is pay-per-use.

I only want to auto-roam, not even data-roam. While out of town, I only need my primary line to be able to receive calls. Simple as that. So I don't care if Singtel's data-roaming cost is in its thousands, coz I've never thought of using the line for data once I leave town.

But the issue here as mentioned by another member, with auto-roaming turned on, couldn't even get a network.

Is it good enough if I've AutoReadyRoam turned on (it's always been so, anyway), BUT data usage line is either off or put to say, the Simba line? I just need a simple network in case of important calls.

If it can't even do that, then I guess Singtel can and never will be my primary line. Never had such an issue with M1 that I used to have my private line on, until I decided to cut costs.

That has been the way I use Singtel for my very occassional roaming needs.

MySingtel App -- AutoReadyRoam ON
Dual SIM Android phone -- Singtel SIM data off and roaming off when travelling. The other SIM will have data and roaming enabled.

Singtel main line -- only for receiving roaming incoming SMS. Also receive incoming voice calls (but I will reject to avoid the roaming charges, of course I may have to accept in case of emergency but that has not happened yet)

eight or travel-eSIM for roaming data, eight also for roaming voice calls.

So far so good for me -- no extra charges from Singtel side.

Thank you! That's the settings I've always had on for my SG lines once I get off our shores. But getting a network either zero or took hours upon hours for my ex-Singtel primary line.

BUT, will see how it goes on my next trip for the present 1528 line. Thanks again. (y)

Before changing to the Singtel SIM Only (S$20 --> S$20.37 --> S$15.28), I was using Singtel Combo 2 plan with very limited data (2GB by default, 3GB with some offers, x2 add-on to get 6GB). Then I have my Starhub Happy Prepaid card as well (my main number before signing up for Singtel Mobile in Sept 2013), which I still keep now since I got the S$3 per month migration offer in Nov 2025.

Then for occassional travel needs, I would pay a bit for Starhub Happy Prepaid roaming data for short trip and then local SIM if needed.

The Singtel line was able to receive free incoming SMS without roaming data plan at that time -- 3G days.

Exception -- I was holding a company phone for one year plus with Singtel Mobile Combo 3 and roaming enabled -- paid by company for business trip. I knew the price of high roaming voice charges as I needed to use the phone for some voice calls.

By right this should not happen. What you do is the recommended way to use Singtel SIM Only, if you want to receive free incoming roaming SMS.

We have two Singtel SIM Only plans and we never got S$18 roaming charges with the four recent visits to China with (my wife: three times, me: one time). Same that we do not use Singtel for roaming data but using eight or other means like travel eSIM. In fact, I have never got roaming charges this way for so many years.

Maybe you accidently enabled data on the phone. Sometimes it becomes tricky with some settings on the phone, like dual SIM Android phone.

Example from my Poco X7 Pro.
1) Main SIM -- Singtel SIM Only, not for roaming, data disabled, roaming diasbled on the phone (MySingtel app still allow ReadyRoam).
2) Secondary SIM -- say eight mobile for roaming usage, data eneabled, roaming enabled. Used as the primary during roaming for data and voice.

In the phone, there is a setting to "use mobile data during VoLTE calls on the secondary SIM" which you may enable in Singapore. But I tend to think it may cause issues during roaming.
I was quite careful not to enable data roaming on my SingTel line, checking all my settings. Actually, it activates out of the blue only on the 4th day of my trip. My first 3 days no issues.

AutoReadyRoam is a convenient safety-net feature by Singtel that automatically activates an affordable, multi-destination roaming plan as soon as you land overseas. It protects you from exorbitant pay-per-use roaming charges.

Cost Effective:
It ensures you are billed the standard ReadyRoam rate rather than costly pay-per-use data charges.

Expert Recommendation:
Singtel
strongly advises leaving AutoReadyRoam turned on as a safety net against accidental mobile data usage.
IMHO
Definitely AuoReadyRoam is a safety-net.
Also Singtel recommended to leave data roaming ON in the app and OFF in the phone - I would think this is not a sure way preventing data leak hence the AutoReadyRoam.

Indeed seldom connected to SingTel 4G as there is 5G NSA fallback.

But your Singtel 4G speed is excellent. I will prefer this type of 4G speed then weak signal 5G SA/NSA speed.

For the Singtel S$15.28 line, mostly I can get 5G SA. At other places, it will fall back to 5G NSA. Almost never fall back to 4G LTE.

At some lifts, it will have no signal...

Basically when 5G signal is very weak, 4G signal will also be the same, does not really have 4G to help out.

That is my worry when there were reports Singtel would shut down 5G NSA. But then that has not happened yet.

I experienced 5G fall back to 4G - not sure if the 5G SA is 5G+ or 5G NSA .
5G+ is better than 4G when no signal, the reconnect is much faster.

P.S. I wonder if there is an app or widget that can show like 4G, 5G+ SA, 5G NSA, etc. 🤔

Forget about 5G+ for now, that symbol does not show up for Apple iPhone or Samsung phones. It is showing up for some Android phones to show 5G Carrier Aggregation.

4G+ may be more universal, it means 4G LTE-Advanced with Carrier Aggregation.

5G SA -- 5G radio access network, 5G core network
5G NSA -- 5G radio access network, 4G core network
4G LTE -- 4G radio access network, 4G core network.

Just use NetMonitor free app for Android.

Edit to add: I also use NetMonster free app.

Edit to add: I paid for the Network Cell Info app. It has the widget function but I do not really use the widget function.

Got Widget ? Means i no need to open the app to see.

It does not have widget function.

I have edited my post to provide another option. Network Cell Info has widget function but I have not used it

Interesting: just saw an SMS from SingTel hi! Prepaid which says that "5G NSA network will be progressively closed by 30 June 2026". Let's see if that really happens or not.

Interesting SMS from SingTel hi! Prepaid.

I thought all my SingTel Prepaid Cards have been upgraded to 5G+ already but apparently I missed one S$8 SIM which was bought for testing in late 2025. Looks like that card is still 4G.

But the phone should be 5G SA compatible as it was my previous main phone: Poco X4 GT.

<ADV>

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The 5G NSA network will be progressively closed by 30 June 2026, with no further extension. As you are still using a 4G SIM and a non-compatible 5G phone, you will not be able to enjoy Singtel 5G+ services once the network is closed. Upgrade to a 5G+ SIM and phone by 30 June to enjoy faster speeds and enhanced security. Switch to eSIM via the hi!App (www.singtel.com/hiapp > Profile > Request New eSIM) or visit the Singtel roadshow at Bugis Cube (opposite Bugis Junction), daily 11am–9pm, or selected dormitories. Please bring your ID and current SIM card. Complete your 5G upgrade and top up by 30 June to receive FREE $5 Main Account credits.

More locations: singtel.com/5gupgrade. Note: SIM upgrades are not available at Singtel Shops.
