Many factors kill the IT industry here.

First is MOE, polys and unis offering discounted laptops to students. That is enough to limit sales to certain brands. No need to go SLS to buy or build a desktop. At times a tablet is good enough.

2nd is the high rental and cheaper alternative online sources.

My last remaining "desktop" is a server hosting some apps. Finally retired my 20+ year old PC, and replacing it is a Raspberry PI.

Yes this is the real old Funan from 1985.
The one that TS showed is the intermediate Funan after minor upgrades like adding an external escalator and reconfiguring shops in 2005.
Then the whole thing was reconstructed from 2016 to 2019 to Funan Mall of today.

In 1993 there was a major renovation going on at the old Funan.

The old one not the current one, think their last year was 2015 if I remembered correctly but in the last few years the large fountain at ground level no longer function.

The Old Singpost mall was really unique, remembered will just buy an Ice cream and sit at the sitting area at either Basement 1 or 2 and enjoy the breeze. So cooling.

Very soon, people like us who hold nostalgia for this period will be gone too. Or at least the nostalgia will be gone...

At least we been through that memorable era.

Current gen will have different or no memories in future.

Old Singpost Mall was unique, now Singpost Mall/PLS/PLQ and nearby Kinex are just typical malls.

Hope City Plaza don't get touched anytime soon and maintain their uniqueness.

moore's law as well, CPU improvement seems so incremental now, so no need to upgrade as often.

No reason to upgrade the processors nowadays. Today is can use, just stretch and maximise it.

I rem I chased after 3 iterations of the Intel cpu back in the 90s - 486DX33, 66 and 100. Then played with the Cyrix chips equivalent to the Pentium. I have up the chase in early 2000s. Can't feel any significant difference with each upgrade since not doing any heavy computational stuffs. Still had those cpu chips tucked somewhere in the storeroom.

In sg, electricity too ex to do crypto mining. Back in late 2000s, I participated in distributed computing projects to max out the cpu.

As a fun challenge, you can try running Linux on them, see how it performs in modern day (though limited to command-line). Linux only just dropped support for 486 and prior in the recent kernel 6.15. Which, come to think of it, is ancient by today's computing standard, being almost 40 years old.

Using Pentium 4 with desktop environment is not a big deal, so it's not too big of a challenge. Anything before Pentium II would be more fun to try. (P4 is the oldest gen hardware I have)

The last great jump is from Pentium 4's Netburst to Core architecture. After that, really feels incremental (and stagnation during certain periods for different companies).
