The opennet guys have come and gone today and did their job in just over 1 hr pulling the cable to my study. It was a good experience and the contractor was a very nice guy. He shared with me his opinion but said it was up to me if I wanted to pull the cable to the study room or next to TV. his often response was 'No problem' which was nice to hear. He was professional and even rounded off the extra cable length saving me some money. The foreign worker workers were also very good and tried to minimise any dirt caused from drilling and their work.

Many pple were of the view that gigabit network will need change in the cabling system as cat5 can only run up to max 100 mbps. This article will explain how gigabit network works.. actually, gigabit network runs @ about the same max speed as 100 mbps except for the different coding and the use of all the cables in the cabling system..

if one really feel pinch, one can still use the good old cat5 system in a gigabit network with little or no degrading effect in downloading speed.. one can always try the cat5 cable system in a gigabit network before upgrading them to cat5e or cat6..

Not sure how much 5e cost.
But i feel since the ugliness is quite permanent, might as well spend the money.
Renovating of the flat costs tens of thousands, what's the mere $200..

Just finished installing fibre into my room. Was served by 2 local guys who were experienced and fast. One of them just asked me where I would like to install it, and simply explained to me that I will have to write down and sign on the form when I told him I wanted it in my room.

All finished in about an hour, including testing.

1490nm: 0.72
1550nm: 0.52

is it very bad? compare to the high readings i see on some of the posting

Edit: just understand that less than 0.5 readings are good enough. noobie post but just to clarify.. is it really good if its less than 0.5?

I had a very bad experiences with OpenNet recently. I was so happy that the much awaited letter from OpenNet arrived and I quickly logged in to book an installation date.

The installation day, 27 Feb came and the OpenNet guys installed the TP at my server box, all very efficiently done, thanks to my electrical contractor who had already installed a pull line for this when he did the Cat 6 cabling works for my house earlier.

However, I was advised by OpenNet that the line cannot be tested as there was a chokage in the SingTel manhole outside my house and they would need to clear it first before they can connect my fibreoptic in the manhole. I waited patiently for nearly 3 weeks for them to get back to me. Finally, my patience ran out and I called the OpenNet hotline, who gave me some flimsy excuses and holding answers. She told me that approval has to be obtained from LTA to commence works to clear the chokage in the manhole and I asked her whether OpenNet has sent in the application. She said they did and also called LTA 2 days ago and approval is still pending.

I called LTA to enquire and I was referred to the area officer for my estate who confirmed that no application has been submitted by OpenNet. I told her that OpenNet informed me that an application has been submitted and asked her to contact OpenNet directly to get to the bottom of this. She called me back promptly saying that she has contacted the specific OpneNet technician who said that they have not finished the installation works at my house hence cant clear the chokage yet.

I made several calls to OpenNet and was given the usual run around including getting the specific technician's details from LTA. I was on the verge of calling IDA to complain when the OpenNet technician showed up at my gate over the weekend to explain that the chokage has finally been cleared and my fibre optic line has been connected to the main line in the manhole. However, it still cannot be tested because the main fibre line that connects to my estate's MDF has been disrupted by suspected earthworks due to nearby MRT works. Until that main line is repaired, I will not get any signal and I was told to wait for 2 weeks again. It's almost a month since the TP was installed in my house and my fibre optic line has not been tested yet and I still can't subscribe to the fibre broadband services.

OpenNet is clearly ill equipped to deal with ad hoc teething issues. They only know how to install the lines but have no real ability to resolve other real world technical issues that crop up as no one senior seems to be actively looking into these issues other than the Bangladeshi technician. The management of OpenNet ought to be sacked for mismanaging the company.

I did call up 3M to enquire about it.

According to them, 3M mini concept is like relocating your TP from your actual location to your choice location.

For example, TP is located at living room (HDB) and your choice of location is your bedroom.

3M mini fibre cable will run from your living room to your bedroom with another TP installed there.

Once you used the TP in your bedroom, you cannot use the one in the living room. (example for IPTV in the future)

Henry, please correct me if I have misunderstood 3M.

Cheers.

Ok,ill try to post up some pics soon.
And yes, you are absolutely right about your findings.
They had relocated my original point laid by Opennet, not from the living room but all the way from above my main door.
I believe in future HomePNA would be widely available to solve the IPTV problem using existing SCV cable points.
