From May 1, all new buildings must come with fibre broadband points for every home. Within the home, developers must also lay structured cables in every room for distributing the fibre broadband signals.

The new requirements were listed in the Infocomm Development Authority's (IDA) new buildings code released on Wednesday. This is part of the Government's push to have every building installed with the necessary equipment for mobile and fixed broadband services.

All building owners - new and existing - must also set aside rent-free space in the development for telcos to install mobile equipment including base stations for adequate indoor coverage. A base station transmits and receives signals from users' cellphones within a defined radius.

IDA said it wants to keep its code of practice relevant to consumer needs - particularly amid rising fibre broadband and smartphone usage. Mr Leong Keng Thai, IDA deputy chief executive and director-general for telecoms and post, said that changes in the building code are "will benefit consumers and improve their mobile and broadband experiences".

They shld have done this long long ago. only HDB can do concealment of these cables legally. Those who engage own contractor bo bian have to use the ugly trunking

Guys, just wanna check if opennet will not install for free since the last changes from the government?

i was told by opennet that i should approach ISP for this free installation of the termination point in my house.

however, most ISP will require you to sign a contract with them before arranging the so call free installation by opennet.

OpenNet will not charge for the 1st time installation.
Why would u want a TP point but not subscribing to any fiber services?

nope. i am going to signup for fiber plan. but i do not want to be tied down with contract.

and most ISP needs me to signup 12 - 24 months contract in order for them to offer the TP point installation.

Viewqwest offers plans with no contract. So you can terminate any time you want. You can refer to our price plans here. ViewQwest - Fibernet - Price Plan

yea i know MR got the free installation for all components.
but i'm still on the fence yet due to the MR thread.

Bro,
Honestly, like most of us using fibre broadband from the various ISPs, every customers have their own needs and choosing whichever ISP fits them.

(View as a customer)I was with red camp ADSL before took a plunge into Purple Camp. My usage for Internet is mainly to watch movies (Kshow, PPTV and PPStream) and do surfing online.

Being in the camp for almost 1 year, what i like about it is the "human touch" from Call centre, all the staffs in there.

That is why one of the reasons I choose to stick with them.

Some of the issues that MR faces is also kena by the rest of the ISPs. which is beyond their control.

If you are interested to find out more before making a decision, you can give me a call or check out my website (MyRepublic Fibre BroadBand)

My new house coming in next year March. I suspect no opennet box also. Then how ah?

call them come fix must pay?

Now most of the new houses that just TOP will get the TP point for free. The only catch is that you have to approach any of the ISPs to take up a plan with them. The ISPs will arrange the TP installation for you. You do not have to pay a single for that unless you are one of those who rejected the offer earlier.

Is it the same case for mine too?

Received a letter titled "Notice of Optical Fibre Reaching Your Building".

"You may approach your preferred Internet Service Provider to subscribe for fibre broadband services. If you choose to subscribe to a new fibre broadband service, it will include a first pass Termination Point installation and the first 15 metres of optical fibre in your premise."

Is there a deadline for this?

That is smart move. Nothing can replace cable, I always take one with me when travelling just in case hotels would come up with lousy wifi but still have ethernet sockets working.

On a side note, when I ask property agents while viewing some just TOP condo developments why there are no ethernet sockets in every room, they say all WiFi now LOL.

btw, OpenNet doesn't do installation on weekends which kinda sucks.
