Hi all, was wondering if anyone can help me w this qn:

my house currently has no FTP installed, made a call to NLT and was told that it's first pass free. They also mentioned that if I booked an appt w them for installation, it'll cost $235, but if I go thru an ISP, it'll be free ?

Does this suffice to say that regardless of promotions by ISP, I'll be entitled to free installation as long as I contract fibre w them or does it have to be stated clearly like on MR (free FTP installation)?

Thanks :D

it best you consult the service provider directly when you express interest in signing up with them. they will be able to advise you further because different provider will have different caveats to note. FTP installation is never free, but providers tend to absorb the fees in order to provide the service to their customers. However, certain providers will say free installation (worth up to $xxx) while some providers will simply say they absorb totally. Reason being, FTP installation at HDB is totally different cost to installing FTP in private estate, so hence the caveat.. This is the info as far as i know, or perhaps the rules have changed and all providers are absorbing all the cost?

Therefore its your responsibility to check with the provider directly.

Example: Singtel (https://www.singtelshop.com/shop/fibre-broadband/plan-details.jsf?speed=1000&months=24)

Fibre Termination Point installation worth $235.40
Online Exclusive! Free 6 months subscription on 1Gbps Fibre Broadband plan ($0 for the first 6 mths, $59.90/mth thereafter).

Example: M1 (https://www.m1.com.sg/personal/home-broadband#home-network)

Fibre-readiness Check

Do you have a Fibre Termination Point (TP) installed?
(YES): If you already do, your home is now fibre-ready which means you can sign up for a M1 Fibre Broadband service anytime.

(NO): If you have missed the free TP installation provided by NetLink Trust, you can consider selected M1 plans that offer free TP installation. M1 can also help to arrange for your TP installation upon signing up.

Example: Starhub (http://www.starhub.com/personal/store/broadband/browse/products/1gbps-fibre-home-broadband--4990month-foc-3-mths_1000mbps-fibre-broadband.html)

Starhub only allows you to check your home's eligibility by linking to NLT portal, i assume it will help you to arrange with NLT at a fee as well.

FTP not Free

As renfred89 mentioned, FTP installation is not free (at least when comparing with the roll out done few years back) - cost is either waived or some other party absorbs the cost so that the end user doesn't have to bear it.

Starting point is NLT (or OpenNet, as it was known as then) was appointed by IMDA to build the infrastructure for NGNBN. The kiasu one's advice was to get the FTP installed even if no intention to take on fibre or still had a long way on current contract for non-fibre broadband/internet - Why? Almost as good as free no need to even sign on fibre plan, might as well quickly grab first - that aside, I thought it was by way of grants or reimbursement claims that residents get it free but I think a press release in 2008 has the answer:

"To encourage premise owners to connect their homes and businesses to the network, OpenNet is required to waive installation charges for home and building owners when the network first reaches their premises."

my house currently has no FTP installed, made a call to NLT and was told that it's first pass free. They also mentioned that if I booked an appt w them for installation, it'll cost $235, but if I go thru an ISP, it'll be free ?

Dangerous words from that person, especially if one happily goes and subscribe for a plan w/o realising that it'll only be "free" if the service provider is having a promotion to absorb it. That person should have just quoted what's in their FAQ regarding installation cost:

"If you had sent your installation request through your Retail Service Provider (RSP), the installation charges will be included in the RSP’s invoice to you in the next billing cycle. For more details, you may check with your RSP."

Does this suffice to say that regardless of promotions by ISP, I'll be entitled to free installation as long as I contract fibre w them or does it have to be stated clearly like on MR (free FTP installation)?

Thanks :D

That assertion would have been somewhat true 4 to 6 years ago during the initial roll-out. Those that had an appointment for installation but cancelled it were were charged a "fibre cancellation fee" of similar quantum - this still applies today .

From what I know, none of Starhub's ongoing plans waive the cost of FTP installation (think 1+ year ago was the last time I saw any promotion relating to FTP) - activation costs and installation costs (by StarHub) are waived for certain existing plans though.

As for M1's ongoing plans, the proposed address for installation must be:

"NGNBN fibre-connected... and in addition, the Service Address must have been certified fibre-ready..."
.

I think it's best to factor in the cost of installing the FTP as required, and be aware of all the other standard one time-charges (registration, installation, activation, transport fee, delivery fee, etc) for the relevant services to be signed up for. Spend a bit more to pull the FTP in to a suitable location even if it results in being more than 15m; get it right from the start rather than headache later on.

Just signed w m1, and thanks for the advice, there will be free FTP installation for their 1GBps plan. None for 500Mbps. Probably the most value deal among the rest of the isps for now... for those still using ADSL like me haha

Welcome to the dark side!

Just kidding... but just be mentally prepared or perhaps keep your ADSL and only terminate AFTER fibre is up and running if your household cannot do w/o internet for a week or more - there's nothing more that will happen except flaring of tempers and IMDA fining NLT for failing to meet quality of service in connecting households.

It's gonna be Churn Time after IT-related fairs which means NLT gonna have lots of requests backend work resulting from those wanting to jump ship!

Frankly, I think it'll be better if IMDA "fines" NLT, and directs them to ringfence the amount and up the pay for contractors or dictate minimum manpower required... but if the higher authorities think that making NLT decide that they now have to provision budget for regulatory fines as part of cost forecasting like what banks now have to do, what are we to say?

NetLink Trust IPO one step closer to reality; Singtel receives SGX eligibility-to-list letter

By: PC Lee, Daily Edge

SINGAPORE (June 2): Singtel says the Singapore Exchange today issued its conditional eligibility-to-list letter for the public listing of NetLink Trust on the Mainboard.

NetLink Trust designs, builds, owns and operates the passive infrastructure for Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (NextGen NBN).

On Feb 9, Singtel announced it had commenced preparations for the public listing after Singtel agreed to divest its stake in NetLink Trust, a 100%-owned associate of Singtel, to less than 25% ownership by April 22, 2018.

The agreement comes under the IMDA’s structural separation requirements for the NextGen NBN, which states that Singtel will not have effective control in NetLink Trust.

The listing will be subject to, among other things, market conditions, the relevant regulatory and other approvals being obtained, added Singtel.

Shares of Singtel closed 1 cent higher at $3.81

Anyone moved Fiber termination point before for Reno? I'm looking to do my renovation and move my termination point a few meters away to cater to the Feature wall.

just signed up m1 fibre recently and got a date for the Netlink people to come and setup the second fibre line and also for m1 to setup the ONT. Surprisingly, both appointments sui sui on schedule. I expected some delays like other customers had but mine sui sui.

Do you wait 40 day to activate the second port ?:)

I guess I'm lucky! NLT was around the area and did the installation for me 4 days before the actual date. Saturday somemore, so wont need to take leave for the weekday installation :)

everything as per schedule but the NLT guy happened to be near my unit and saw me when i happened to open my door, 2 days b4 the actual scheduled date. He approached me and asked if he can come into my house to activate the second port so that he can save a trip later. But he recorded the activation date as the scheduled date.

I need to relocate part of the fibre optic trunking and put away the excess fibre optic to make way for bigger aircon trunking.

Is NLT the only approved contractor in Singapore for such a job? If otherwise, which other contractors can do such a job?

If what you are doing doesn’t require an increase in the length of the fiber, then you can remove the surface trunking carefully from around it, and re-do the surface trunking on a different route, bearing in mind not to bend the fiber beyond a 3cm radius.

However if you damage the fiber or need it changed to something longer, then your only option is to engage NLT.

In case we need to extend the length of fiber, who is the party we can appoint? And roughly what is the estimated price for that process?

not sure if we can try asking the NLT staff when they are doing the installation at our neighbourhood?
