Got my installation done today despite some confusion with Opennet a few days ago.

Background:
I had made my booking through the phone about one month ago. Appt was confirmed for today. Last Thursday, I get a call saying my appt had to be cancelled due to a technical glitch in their system and that I had no choice of another Saturday. Only Mon-Fri. I asked for someone in authority to speak to. Was told someone would call me back. No one did.

Installation:
This morning, someone rang my doorbell at 9am. It was the Opennet installers. Since they were here, I went ahead with the installation. Installed the TP in my study room.

Opennet technician showed me that there was a signal coming through by plugging out the green cap at the TP after installation (there was a red light shining onto his hand). Capped it back, took some photos, I signed some papers and they left.

Total installation time was about 1.5 hours. Quite a good job with the trunking I should say.

Signal:
1310nm - 0.80
1490nm - 0.60
1550nm - 0.55

Do the signal readings look ok?

Yeah, signals below 1.00 are generally good.

Installation

Just to share experience of my installation :

a. Booking via OpenNet website was done on the 02Sep for installation date of 29Sep 1100-1300h (today).

b. Confirmation email and SMS was issued. Same confirmation SMS was received on Thu 27Sep.

c. OpenNet team of 2 came approx 1145h and started discussing the termination point box location. As self had reviewed with Ayub before, the TP box is to be fix in the distribution box space, which is just next to the main door.

OpenNet advice as per procedure is to install the TP box next to TV with power point.

d. Inform OpenNet team of my decided location and checkout on the fiber cable entry point.

Unfortunately, the initial plan for gas piping entry point was found cement sealed and cutting up the false ceiling is too big a job.

e. Drilling thru the main doorway wall is the simplest option and same were done for other units in my block.

f. Cable was inserted and pulled to the distribution box space. Short cable duct was used. In the distribution box space, flexible hose was used instead for well.. "flexibility".

Requested for a little longer fiber cable for again flexibility in TP box shifting if required in future (I know it will be my risk).

I guess my utilization of the free fiber cable was less than 2 meters from entry point to TP box.

g. TP box is fixed to a high point as I have planned to install a shelf with power points. The ONT, routers and what not will be placed on the shelf.

h. One of the team helps to sweep the debris off and the other guy packs up. The installation team left and the OpenNet testing guy came. During the cable installation time, the testing guy was fixing up the sub-distro box at block main cable trunk.

Apparently my unit is the first to install OpenNet on that floor.

The team leader requested to sign his completion papers. Inquire about the connection testing and assured it is a simple job and will be done. Signed his paper and he left promptly. Saturday and mooncake festival I reckon...

i. Testing guy spliced and joined the fiber cable end to the socket. He called up OpenNet to activate the test. Showed me the "red" dot from the socket "1".

Test measurement :
1310nm - 0.50
1490nm - 0.38
1550nm - 0.30

Guess the results are pretty ok.

j. All OpenNet team gone by 1240h, left myself to square up everything, cleanup the walls, ceilings and floors... :(

Next phase is to wait for Ayub come over to do the LAN sockets and power points. My existing phone panels/sockets will be replaced with LAN faceplates. Fortunately the existing phone line is already of CAT5E cable, hence no unsightly pulling of cables. The home phone lines had never been commissioned before.

Finally need to decide on fiber service provider...

Cheers....

Thanks to armvalkyrie for taking the time to post such a detailed report, with pics some more. This will be most helpful for those with utility box behind the main door.

Just installed the TP.

Signal test.
1310nm - 0.31
1490nm - 0.17
1550nm - 0.12

I was told below 1 is ok by the opennet contractor.

why some are getting higher around 0.50 ~ 0.80?

Is this going to affect the stability of the connecting speed when one is getting 0.30 and the other having 0.80?

These are on site installations which are different from factory automated process with good quality control for consistency. Variations because mainly of how well the terminating ends of the fiber core (glass) were polished and how clean the surface was (Did you notice the installer polishing and cleaning?). Anyway these are within tolerance and will not affect quality of connection.

If you are interested to know more about the basic of fiber optic and testing method, read this enlightening article >>Fiber Optic Jargon

Thanks. :) Did not take note of whether the contractor perform any cleaning or polishing.

I did witness the OpenNet tester using alcohol from a small bottle to wipe, scrub and clean the fiber ends.

Asked him is that alcohol or electro-cleaner.. :s13:

I don't remember seeing the contractor use alcohol. he took a tissue out from the box, looked like he was searching for something but could not find it. Used the dry tissue to wipe the ends and then put the fiber optic cable into the machine for fusing think.

The readings I got seem to be in the range. highest was 0.80, so I guess its ok?

cable inside false ceiling

Here is the snapshots for Opennet cabling behind false ceiling without opening the false ceiling with additional square holes by using the existing light opening. It took them less than an hour. An angpow for the contractors after that.

My understanding is Opennet never do behind false ceiling. You gave them angpow first?

You are right. Opennet contractors don't do cable behind false ceiling. And I am aware of that and I did not give them any anypow first or put forth any suggestion or instigate them to put the cable behind the false ceiling.

Heidel, I see we live in the same condo project. I just got my TP installed today. I must say it was far from a pleasant, cherishable experience. The workers were stressed up and pissed off. They were quite rough too. Any intention of giving an ang pow was quickly retracted.

Anyway, unlike your apartment, my false ceiling is very high, leaving very little gap between it and the concrete above it. In addition, I don't have downlights. I just have the TP installed in the dining hall next to the row of power outlets and co-ax point. For a start, I will use Homeplug, which I am currently using with my cable broadband, to distribute connectivity around the apartment. Once MoCA 2.0 devices are available on the market, I will switch over to use them. The Homeplugs that I have from Aztech support up to 200 mbps. It should be more that sufficient for the 100 mbps fiber plan that I intend to subscribe.

On the other hand I am worried that he may get into trouble if the company get to know it. Most condo roll outs (including mine) were delayed because Opennet refused to accommodate concealed installation.

Haha....perhaps that's why Heidel deleted the photos. Too many clues revealed. Those Opennet guys took photos of their job before they left. Even took a photo of the unit number on my door.

Perhaps you and ideatalk may wish to do likewise. Notice I didn't use the pic in my earlier comment?

I didn't post any photos. Anyway, I don't really care if they read my post and know who I am. In fact, it might be good they know my displeasure with them. I was thinking of lodging a formal complaint with OpenNet but then I also understand that the workers are overworked and under lots of stress. They are rushing the rollout now, all thanks to the 800 lb gorilla who carries a red umbrella.
