Yo Jedi, I'm headed to NYP too, Diploma in IT. Currently Lenovo also has a deal for students and teachers. The Legion Y520 with a 1050ti and 128GB+500GB HDD combo at 1399 around 220 bucks more than the FX553. The ASUS 3 year warranty doesn't cover accidental damage and stuff but the Lenovo's does. I don't know if the additional cash is worth it or not though, because I already have a (gaming) desktop (specs in profile).

Depends on what course you are going for.
Most courses don't need beefy laptops and you likely won't be gaming in school as u have a decent setup with a 27" monitor which would make a laptop feel tiny to game on.

Comparison here:

Price: FX553(1174.86) vs Y520(1399.02)

Aesthetics: Up to you, really.
(Personally I feel that the Y520 looks better with the stealth black exterior look compared to the orange, red and black of the FX553)

GPU: FX553(1050) vs Y520(1050Ti)
If you look at benchmarks, the 1050Ti does a lot better in games.(not sure about rendering software but should be better for that also)

CPU: Both same(i7-770HQ)
Screen: both same(FHD LED)
RAM: Both same(8Gb)

Warranty: FX553(3yrs) vs Y520(3yrs+accidental dmg)

Non-volatile storage: FX553(256Gb SSD) vs Y520(128Gb SSD+500Gb HDD)

Speakers: FX553(Functional) vs Y520(Harmon Kardon)

Keyboard: FX553(2mm travel, red backlight) vs Y520(1.2mm travel, red backlight)

Freebies: FX553(asus backpack, 1Tb HDD, hdmi to vga dongle, kensington lock, mouse, headphone) vs Y520(samsonite backpack)

If you don't need the extra freebies and deeper key travel then the $225 extra for the Y520 is worth it if you need something with GPU power(if you don't need more power then thin and light might just be the better option).

Did I miss out anything?

Specs and benchmark comparisons for the Pascal GTX10xx series (GTX1050, GTX1050Ti, GTX1060) and the older GTX960M & GTX970M notebooks. Hopefully, it will help you'll decide on which GPU to choose for your new notebook.

HAHA thanks but I've considered those factors, what you missed out was that I actually indicated my course in the comment you replied to. The Lenovo is IPS HAHA and our poly offers accidental damage insurance at $88 and the RAM of the Lenovo might be clocked higher at 2400mhz. I also find the keys of the Y520 weirdly shaped and the trackpad ugly as it has the glossy finishes at the side, moreover, I have a red black theme to match as my headphones, computer chassis and laptop sleeve are all red black. I also got to test out my friend's FX553 and apart from the speakers, it was pretty alright. Kinda torn, our roadshow starts on the 17th.

haha, sounds like u will have a difficult time deciding. Our lessons also start on 17th though :slant:, so only break time or after class then can go.

Looking for a laptop with a 1050Ti. I can get the Y520 for 1399.02 and the Dell Inspiron 7567 for 1599 but the 200$ difference is not justified especially when the Dell uses a TN panel. Paying $200 more when I can get 3 year warranty + accidental damage coverage and an IPS panel seems quite dumb.

Any advice? I really like the design of the Dell though and battery life is pretty important when I'm buying a laptop for poly use.

If I were to choose between the Lenovo Y520 or the Dell 7567, I will pick the Lenovo Y520 for the following reasons:

(1) IPS screen (Lenovo Y520) vs TN screen (Dell 7567), the TN screen has very bad
viewing angles, dim screen, colour and contrast are also quite bad (see the video
reviews above). You will be looking at the screen all the time, so I will pick the
Lenovo over the Dell.

(2) Weight : 2.4Kg (Lenovo Y520) vs 2.6Kg (Dell 7567). Lenovo is lighter than Dell.

(3) Price: $1399.02 (Lenovo Y520) vs $1599 (Dell 7567). Lenovo cheaper by $200

(4) Warranty: 3 Yrs (Lenovo Y520) vs 1 Yr (Dell 7567). Additional $99 if you want to
upgrade the Dell's warranty to 3 yrs.

HAHA thanks saw the TN panel and it's really hideous. Anyway you missed out on the fact that the 1 year warranty by Dell doesn't cover accidental damage but the Lenovo's 3 year warranty does.
