For technical reviews on laptops, google for "notebookcheck + brand/series" of what you're considering.. so you can make an informed decision.

Laptops are not only about paper specs, just saying.

That's why only buy laptop with next business day onsite and maximum of 1 week resolution with loan if more than that.. I think only ThinkPad is offering this. ThinkPad not ideapad

You'll be surprised how much the service levels have degraded under Lenovo ever since the IBM support contract ended, if you use the search function on the thinkpad thread or scroll thru the pages.

I am deliberating between the ASUS FX553 and HP Pavilion 15 as they both feature the mid-tier GTX 1050 GPU. Both models share comparable specs and price points, but I am leaning towards ASUS as I've read reviews about the poor display quality on the Pavilion 15, e.g. dim display with washed out colours. Can anyone corroborate this? Thanks!

You can take a look at the display quality for the HP Pavilion 15 from this review:

It's definitely better than the Dell 7567 (refer to the video review above) but no comparisons yet between it and the Asus FX553. You have to personally check both out and see which display you prefer.

Judging by the vid, the Pavilion 15 has a better viewing angle than the Dell but suffers from a slower refresh rate. Guess I'll have to inspect both models in person. Thanks for sharing!

For me, the advantages of the HP screen mentioned in the video review outweigh the slower refresh rate

Hi, I've tried my friend's FX553 and the colours aren't anything special. The viewing angles also not say very good. I'd rather you go for the HP as it has better battery life and 4GB more RAM (if you're buying from roadshow that is) By the way he says the battery life is horrendous, 3-3.5 hours, no gaming.

Just purchased the Inspiron 7567 today. 1590 with 3 year onsite warranty. I've heard horror stories about the display but the battery life is amazing. For those interested, contact dell saying you're a student and they'll send you a quote via email (I can forward an example to you guys, PM me your email address). The price on the website with 1 year on site warranty is 1599. For those who don't need the 3 year warranty, after you contact support, they'll slash 100 bucks off and it'll be 1500.

I don't know whether you have gone to the Dell showroom in Plaza Singapura to check out the Dell 7567 demo set. If you had gone there, you would have seen that the display is horrible.

But if you can live with all the shortcomings that I pointed out, then it's ok

If it's still alive after poly I'll swap it out with a third party screen off of eBay. Anyway I'll get the laptop soon and will update the thread. I chose this over other laptops as I really fell in love with the aesthetics and I really couldn't refuse the offer the Dell rep gave. The insane battery life is a selling point too.

Absolutely. I'd pick an IPS screen over a TN panel for sure. However, I'd still like to assess both the FX553 and Pavilion 15 displays to see how they match up.

Thanks for your inputs. I'll assess both models at the roadshow to see which laptop I'm more comfortable with. Apart from viewing angles, brightness is another important factor especially if you plan to use the notebook in brightly lit environments. Btw, the ASUS is using a 48Wh battery so I'm not expecting it to last beyond 4 hours with moderate use.

Yes I would too but I took the Inspiron because of its huge 74whr battery and because of the amount of reviewers that complimented its battery life. If I'm unhappy with the display I can just swap it out with an 80SGD 15.6" aft market display.

I believe that it's more essential to have a higher battery capacity as we are using it for poly and will always be on the go. I would've taken the Y520 if I was just looking for a laptop for home usage.

Yep .hp person told me asus battery v bad. I bought e probook 440 n battery life is 👍👍👍.But i'd prefer a laptop with backlit keyboard :( . Its light , weighing arnd 1.6~1.7kg. But then again the battery depends on yr usage. If u do heavy gaming then the batt will run out v fast

Dell's 74Wh battery and flaming red chassis are tempting options but I'd still choose the Asus, everything else considered. I don't require screens with amazing colour accuracies, but it must have a decent viewing angle and contrast ratio at the very least. Besides, the FX553 is a a cheaper option if you were compare the two, spec for spec.

Hmm, how much more do you have to fork out if you choose to replace 7567's display? I am also reading conflicting specs with regard to the FX553's screen. Some claim it's only a TN panel, whereas other sites claim otherwise. I suppose I will let my eyes decide during the roadshow. :D

around 80 sgd, its a screen by AU Optronics from an ebay seller with 99.4% positive reviews and I highly doubt it's an IPS from what I've seen. Even if it's IPS it probably is quite a low quality one bc the viewing angles aren't too good considering apart from lifelike color reproduction, it's the niche feature on an IPS. Really, really doubt it is an IPS. If I came across this thread earlier I could've sent pictures or took a video lmao.

TN panels are known to have a notoriously limited vertical viewing angle. That's the first thing I'd check. Wow, paying 80SGD for another TN screen kinda sucks though. :s13::s13:
