how about a super ideal from JP + a custom "tiffany" setting :o

I'm quite sure it'll look way better than the t&c.

But it will be a higher grade replica right?

Is just a choice between tiffany brand with lower grade stone or tiffany look a like with a higher grade stone.

Hmm I wouldn't label it a replica (unless it comes with it's own blue box and t&c "authenticity" stamp :s13:). For me, the stone is the priority.

What does your gf think? That should always be the ultimatum.

Ask her before if she prefers branded with mid quality stone or non branded with high quality one. She is fine with both, up to me to decide.

I like the tiffany classic design, but getting it from JP and pple ask if its tiffany ring u can only say look a like haha.

imho i don't think jannpaul is considered 'non-branded' la as you can see if has quite a following in this post ;) As a guy I couldn't care less if everyone else in the office purchased a JP, though if I were the lady then I could have that concern (your girlfriend doesn't seem to mind though).

End of the day, i felt that regardless whether it is a T&C ring or a JP ring, no one can really tell the brand just by looking at it. However one could definitely tell the quality of the ring from its look, and if you are going to sacrifice quality for brand, your girlfriend may end up not feeling too happy when comparing the sparkliness with a friend's ring of better quality.

One thing you could consider is purchasing a branded wedding band instead? That way you can have both the quality diamond and the brand. If you still want to go for T&C engagement ring, how about downsizing the carat for a quality stone? :s13:

Well if your gf has no preference, I'd suggest you take a look around at the other offerings for your budget before deciding to buy the t&c brand. Although this thread is quite JP-centric, I think there're many other jewellers mentioned in one of the posts above. Good look for your hunt!

Second this. I believe in part 2 of the thread, there was a picture comparing a t&c diamond and an octagon from JP. The disparity

just got the 3D renders for the ring. Unfortunately there is no feasible way to set the octagon in a 6 prong setting :( I had them do up one with a simple classic compass setting and this was what I got

What do you guys think? Still torn between this and picking a round diamond for the 6 prong instead :s11:

Why don't you set it this way? I think it looks more fancy this way. I did mine this way too :o

I prefer the 2,4,8,10 setting for an octagon also! My personal preference is for the end of the prongs to be less obtrusive i.e. smaller, rounded, or pointy to showcase the beauty of the diamond when viewed from top.

JannPaul is popular for good engagement rings, though i dont think they are a full fledged brand. just yet. first, they are still under House of Hung shop. no real signboard, own dedicated showcase/gallery or whatsoever. i still recalled the day i had to ask myself whether JannPaul store had closed down when i was about to approach House of Hung. secondly, i wish they branded their diamonds better. to be an established or at least recognised brand, the diamond should be laser insribed with JP logo. just like Lazare diamond, Destinee diamond and all. or even just the ring. it is just a way to easily tell that the diamond is indeed one of JannPaul Super Ideal diamond. well i am not talking about Solasfera and other cuts which are sourced from other specialised diamond cutters.

lastly, to complete the brand, JannPaul has to provide an unique ring box. Tiffany has the blue box. Cartier has the deliciously looking red box. and Harry Winston... i wish i have one of HW ring box. i have nothing against JP box, i just had to buy a better looking box. packaging has to have more impacts and i find JP box to be classy yet pack no punch.

Second this. I believe in part 2 of the thread, there was a picture comparing a t&c diamond and an octagon from JP. The disparity

Tiffany and Co diamonds range from mediocre to ideal cut. however, you need to be able to determine it yourself. i had seen some of their offerings and they varied quite substantially. did the quoted prices differ? yes, of course. at that time, i saw one with HCA score less than 1. decent clarity and D colour. technically it was a good diamond cut but i cant tell without actually viewing it in different lights and under scopes. price was higher, no doubt.

so, one advice to NoLogicLah or anyone looking at Tiffany and Co, please do your homework. they have some excellent diamonds, you just have to be good enough to spot or determine which is which. knowledge is power.

out of all the luxury jewelry stores i visited, only Harry Winston has excellent diamonds (at least) in its inventory. most of luxury stores (Tiffany, Cartier and etc) allow mediocre cut diamonds, obviously for bigger profit margin. nonetheless, when you have all the money, you get to buy the brand.

just for an example to illustrate my point. lets group two individuals who buy Toyota and Ferrari. Toyota can save more fuel, generally has bigger space, provides more additional spec (at higher model with far cheaper cost than buying Ferrari) and is generally more reliable. knowing this, there are still people who buy Ferrari which consume far more fuel, smaller and not so reliable. plus you cant actually drive Ferrari and exploit its true, fast nature all the time in Singapore.

frankly speaking, you wont be seeing lots of rich people (millionaires and the likes) going to JannPaul store. they would go to those luxury stores. and do they care if they buy inferior products? honestly, no.

i think buying from JannPaul is like buying a Toyota. you know it has nice stuffs and at far more affordable price. lots of people here bought or think of buying from JP, including me. nevertheless, if our bro wants to buy Tiffany and Co, it is entirely his choice. there are so many choices in this world, just go with your heart. cause i know some girls who dream of having those blue boxes and see them open when the guys pop the question. in a way what people buy from Tiffany and Co is mostly the brand and the dream.

or just follow the girlfriend preference. happy wife = happy life :)

round witb 6 prong. octagon cut is nice though. just my own preference for brilliant round cut.

For me one of the consideration of TnC is also because the quality of the rock has no functional use. But the tiffany brand will always be there does not matter if it is of lower quality than JP. End of the day people know the prices right, if all ur gf got the ring from JP they will only be comparing whose one is more worth it.

Most importantly is which ring can make my gf happier haha.

I am not rich enough to choose a branded and excellent cut ring. So have to sacrifise either one part.

Is the quality more impt? Say a 0.3x D/E grade vs a 0.4x F/G grade

I'd stick with a 0.4x with F colour minimum if within your budget.

Bro Hunter, care to share some sources for ring boxes? If not I can pm you. Thx!

The ring box from T&C is black haha, only the box containing the ring box is blue. My friend gotten her e-ring from T&C and she was a little disappointed with the ring box...

i bought a led ring box from Etsy, similar to the Bright Box. you can buy Bright Box from amazon US site but they dont ship it outside US. need to use forwarding services. mine is similar without the special embossing "bright box". excellent for night proposal.

for daily storage, i got her a box from Mrs Box. in her fave colour and with her initial. she wanted it... so i gotta go and buy... she was happier with it :)

yes, indeed. my bad, the cardboard box is blue. not the ring box. JannPaul ring box has no gold embossing. yes, the cardboard box got JannPaul on it. just saying at least when you open Tiffany and Co box, there are those gold letters telling you it is from Tiffany and Co. and the box is slightly curvy and thus, more elegant. JannPaul box has a classy look nonetheless, in all black. i just found it less appealing for proposal. i am sure a good portion of the guys like JannPaul box, to each his own. this world is full of options after all.

Haha a quick search on google shows pics of it. I think the iconic blue box is like a present, so when proposing need to open two times?

Think I will source for 0.4x F grade then. Still got half year to go plan to propose in dec.

go with bigger carat. i wont go with G. some people would take G as the minimum though. it is hard to tell G colour from face up but it does appear slightly yellowish at certain lights. just very very slightly though. those specs aside, look at the certificates and choose a better cut. do your own assessment.

as functional use, a better cut diamond shines more. and as mentioned here, lots of girls do compare the glitters (or fire and scintillation). but, people do compare with brand names as well. same goes with girls buying Hermes bag even if there is one similar bag (with similar quality) from another "cheaper" brand. lets say for example Guess or Coach? it is just how girls are usually wired... and a large portion of society here. brand recognition! sadly that is how the world works. the moment you mention Tiffany and Co ring to people around you, they will more likely to respond in awe, admiration or surprise. especially to those who never get the chance to learn more about jewelry. my SO had never heard of JannPaul prior to shopping around for the engagement ring. she was like what is that brand... took awhile to convince her to visit JP after we went through almost all the b&m stores in Singapore. whichever route you choose, as long as you and your SO are happy with it, no matter if it is from JannPaul or Tiffany and Co, it is the correct choice. no one else can say otherwise.

that doesnt mean all diamonds are the same. there are some places which sell diamonds at similar price or higher price without the additional bonus like Tiffany and Co, Harry Winston and etc. those places, you need to avoid those for sure.

I was looking at Mrs Box also, very beautiful. Pricing with initials also equally beautiful. I guess if my gf intends to wear it daily, I don't need such a box right lol.

i must advise to buy a box for her nonetheless. for occasional storage, even if she intends to wear daily. and best to remove the ring while showering, washing hands or etc. chemicals will slowly make the ring duller. or if she needs to do some physical work like going to gym. plus, Mrs Box suits well to be used for ladies. i dont know where my JannPaul box is now, it is just another black, regular ring box to me.

You cant compare diamond with bag, the bag is very prominent with the branding and people will know it with one look. For diamonds, people notice with the sparkles, not the brand. First comment on diamond: WAH so big and sparkly, not eh so nice, where did you get the diamond from?

So my 2 cents worth, go for sparkly, big and affordable instead of brand =)
